Candy Quackenbush can walk on water. ([info]toitshour) wrote in [info]utr_logs,

Who: Candy Quackenbush and Sam Ford.
What: Dinner and a movie.
When: Tonight.
Where: Out and about London.
Warnings: Doubtful.

Candy had dressed up a little bit - had said a "nice" restaurant, after all - and she smiled as she went over to Sam's house to pick him up. She was wearing a black dress, little but not too little, and she knocked politely.

She wondered why he wanted to go to dinner and a movie. It was such a date-like gesture, but Candy knew that Sam didn't like girls. So she was forcing herself to put it into the back of her mind, and she put her hands behind her back as she waited.

Sam was wearing a dress shirt and a tie. He'd been debating adding a suit jacket, but decided against it. He opened the door, smiling when he saw Candy. "Hey."

He sort of wished he'd been the one to pick her up. More date-like. But she was the one with the crazy magic thing, so it made sense. "You look really nice," he said.

"Thanks." She smiled and pet Sam's hair a little bit, feeling rather sisterly. "I appreciate you getting me out of the house. I love Esk, but she's ... peppy." She sighed a little bit and laughed. "Sometimes I need to be around less cheer. Where are we headed? We could fly, but I'm sure you'd rather take a taxi."

He smiled inwardly as she pet his hair, enjoying that. "Well, if I have to pout and moan for you to have a good time, I guess I can make that sacrifice." He was a good actor, afterall.

He held open the door for her--a little less impactful what with it already being open, and all. "I was thinking Chez Pierre? If you like French." They'd eaten out a lot, but French had never been on the table before, unless you were counting fries.

"You could even whine, I'd be fine with that." She rolled her eyes at him, laughing a little bit. He made her do that a lot, which was why they were so close. She smiled when he held the door open for her and shrugged at his suggestion. "Never had it. I'm not exactly a nice restaurant kind of girl."

He grinned. "I will keep that in mind." He shut the door behind them. He wasn't exactly acting like the depressed emo-kid he was last week when Iggy had unwittingly rejected him.

He walked with her back out to the street, then led her down the sidewalk a bit to where he'd parked the car about ten minutes ago. He unlocked the car and held open the passenger side door of the shiny red Tessla. "There's something for you inside."

He did seem a lot happier, and it did her some good to see. She was glad she'd worn flats - she was terrible at walking in heels - and she would've tripped over herself as she saw the car. "That car is really ... impressive." She blinked when he held the door open and crawled inside, and couldn't help being confused at the teddybear holding a rose waiting for her inside.

"I - thank you. It's really cute."

"It's my Dad's," he said of the car as he went around to get in the driver's side. Sam was really glad his dad had let him borrow it. They'd been getting along pretty well lately. Maybe his dad was rewarding him for all the honesty, or something. Whatever it was, Sam was glad to see that it made an impression on Candy.

"You're welcome. It made me think of you." He smiled, feeling a little nervous. He started the car and pulled out into the street once the road was clear.

"I actually don't know how to drive, so I'm really impressed that you know how at all." She adjusted the hem of her skirt, pulling it lower. With him taking her out to dinner, and buying her stuffed animals, she felt a curious fluttering in her stomach.

Tucking her hair behind her ear, she tried not to act awkward.

He grinned. "Well, I don't know how to fly, so I guess we're both pretty impressive individuals." He was keeping his eyes pretty much locked on the road, hands at 10 and 2. He would be in so much trouble if anything happened to the car. But he was a good driver, and he'd memorized the route to the restaurant. It wasn't that far.

He pulled up in front of the restaurant and paid for the valet parking. "I, uh. I hope you like it," he said to Candy, smiling.

"We are both impressive." She twirled her hair a little bit, looking out the window. "Sam? Um - this is going to sound stupid - is this like... a date or something?" She felt herself blushing, her cheeks going red.

Sam blushed, too. "Um. I was sort of hoping it would be, yeah." He looked over at her, wondering what her reaction would be. He should've told her at first, so she would know what she was agreeing to. "I mean.. I really like you."

"I like you too, I just - you know. Didn't think you liked girls." She shrugged, looking down at her hands. "It can be, if you want." She had absolutely not been expecting anything like this, and she laughed nervously.

"I didn't think I did either," he said sheepishly. "But you're special." He rubbed the back of his neck nervously. Hopefully that didn't seem insulting, or anything. Like implying she was like a guy or something. He wasn't sure how to put it in words. "I.. I'm kind of confused about everything, too, but the one thing I'm sure about is that I like you. A lot."

She nodded. She wasn't sure exactly what was going on - she didn't doubt that he was confused, she was too. But she'd just play it by ear. "Okay."

He smiled warmly to her and then opened the door, handing the keys to the valet. He walked around and opened Candy's door, offering her his hand.

He wasn't very experienced with this whole 'dating' thing, unless you counted the fake-dating that Sam and Candy had already done. He had been much more suave on their pretend dates. He was self-conscious now, unsure if he should hold her hand or what. One of the servers opened the door for them.

Candy couldn't help but bite her lip and giggle when she took his hand. It was so normal, which for her was incredibly abnormal.

She squeezed his hand and looked over at him. Boa sighed loudly in the back of her mind, and Candy couldn't help but agreeing. She knew this was yet another bad mistake in a series of weird circumstances for her that had been less than ideal. But Candy's optimism won over.

He smiled over at her when she giggled, glad to see her this happy. He squeezed back.

He'd made a reservation earlier, so the table was ready for them when they got there. The maitre'd showed them to their table. It was a really nice restaurant, with candles on the table and everything.

"You look really nice." He'd already said that, hadn't he?

"You do too." She wondered idly if he'd told his father where he was going. Sitting down, she reached into her purse to quickly braid her long hair and tie it back. "Thanks for all of this."

"Thanks for coming," he said, smiling. "And staying when you found out it was a date. That, uh, that could've been awkward," he said with a little laugh. Not that this wasn't awkward.

He looked down at the menu. "I'm learning French," he said, smiling. "So I can order for us, if you want."

"I won't say I'm not surprised. And I won't say that I hope this doesn't affect our friendship - I do still want to be your friend. I always will. But I'm okay with a date, really."

She examined the menu and wrinkled her nose when she didn't understand any of the words. "I think you'll have to, I have no idea what any of this is."

Sam nodded. "Absolutely. Friends, no matter what." He couldn't imagine anything being so messy that their friendship couldn't recover. Especially since he was so confused and hesitant right now.

He leaned over her menu and pointed to the sections. "That's chicken stuff.. Um. There's fish. Soup." He couldn't give her a lot of specifics, but he knew the broad sections.

She squeezed his hand and smiled. "Good." Her friends were few and far between - she needed to keep the ones she had.

Chuckling, she lightly nudged him under the table with her foot. "We could ask the waiter what they recommend."

He wasn't really surrounded by friends, either. He smiled back, nodding. "We'll just play it by ear."

"We could... Or we could just try something new. Be adventurous." He grinned, daring her.

"That works. I like a lot of fish, so I'll try that." She closed her eyes, put a hand over them, and put her finger on the menu randomly. "That one."

When the waiter came back, he ordered the one Candy had picked out with mostly-decent pronounciation, and picked something random for himself, too. He turned back to Candy, hoping she'd be a little impressed by the 'language of love'.

"So.. how are you liking being back at school and everything?" It sounded completely lame. It was weird doing date-small-talk with someone you hung out with all the time. "Are you doing cheerleading again this year?"
