Who: Sam and Nathan Ford
When: Last week
What: Bonding?

Sam had been moping around for a few days. Usually Sam went out and hung out with friends and stuff after school, but he'd been coming home earlier. He was still going to his 'class' at the gym and his French tutoring session, but he was decidedly less excited about all of it.

Currently he was sitting in the living room, watching some infomercial crap.

"That BS will rot your brain," Nate commented, coming into the room. He had a bowl of popcorn, and he sat down beside Sam. A peace offering? Maybe.

"Hm?" He looked up at his dad and shrugged. "Hey." He took a handful of popcorn and offered the remote to his dad. He wasn't attached to the infomercial or anything. Just something to zone out to.

Nate happened to have two cans of soda under his arm, and once he was situated, he held one out to Sam then took the remote to look for something more interesting. He landed on a sports recap show, talking about the weekend's games.

"Hey, yourself." He really didn't know what to say. This whole being an involved parent thing was more difficult than he ever realised. Though it was awkward, it was worth it. "What's up?"

Sam took the soda with a mumbled "Thanks." Sports weren't Sam's favorite thing--mainly because jocks were assholes--but he did enjoy watching games with his dad.

He opened his soda and shrugged. "School sucks." He thought about it for a moment, then added, "Classes are okay." He was a good student. "School wouldn't be so bad if not for all the people." He rolled his eyes.

Nate nodded. He remembered. He hadn't been a big fan of school, himself. "I think most kids feel that way." He wasn't sure if that was a helpful thing to say, though he figured it wasn't really. "It'll be okay."

Sam gave a wry smirk. "Yeah, probably." Maybe he was more like 'normal' kids than he thought. After all, he couldve just as easily liked a girl and caught her kissing another dude.

He shrugged. "Eliot's been teaching me self-defense." He'd almost said 'teaching me to fight', but at the last second he figured 'self-defense' might go over a little better. "Some jocks at school bothered me last year. They've started leaving me alone." Please don't be pissed, he tried to telepathically implant in his dad's brains. Where were superpowers when you needed them?

The most shocking part of Sam's declaration was that Eliot was around. "You've seen Eliot?" No one else had seen Eliot for a while. Nate knew where he was, knew Hardison kept tabs on him, but still. he had more or less dropped out of their lives.

"He's been teaching you to defend yourself?" He could have called it fighting, he knew that's what it was, but he was willing to go along with Sam's description. Especially since he hadn't heard from the school about Sam getting into fights.

"Yeah. I asked him to," Sam said, scratching the back of his neck. It was one of his nervous tells, and a sign that he was being sincere, rather than playing a part. Honesty was much more nervewracking than acting. "In his defense, though, I can be pretty manipulative." Sam gave a crooked smile. "Don't be mad at him, or anything."

Sam had gotten into one fight, the first week of school. It had been over quickly, and Sam had managed to hide his black eye from his dad. Would probably have been worse if Iggy hadn't been there. The thought bummed him out again, and he sighed.

"I haven't seen him for weeks. Months. Hard to be mad at someone who barely exists." That was probably a bit harsh, but there it was. Nate was a little bitter, about Eliot ditching the team. Knowing he was working with Sam made him feel off balance. he wasn't sure if he was happy about it, or if he should be mad. He knew, though, that if anyone could teach Sam self defense, it would be Eliot.

Sam just sorta shrugged. Eliot hadn't really been that hard to find. It wasn't like Sam had gone on some massive expedition, or anything. He just made a post on the internet. He didn't know if his dad had tried that, or if he'd been as stubborn with Eliot as he was with Sophie. "He tried to blow me off at first, but I kept pushing." He shrugged. "Kids getting beat up is kinda one of his soft points." Sam scratched the back of his head.

"Hey, Dad? Uh. Question for you. You ever had some girl you liked and then found out she liked someone else?"

There was more to be said on the subject of Eliot, but Nate let it go for now, when Sam switched gears. He frowned, processing Sam's words. Didn't Sam like boys? Hadn't that been a huge thing for him to admit? Nate thought he was using the example of women to try to relate to Nate.

"Yeah, I think everyone goes through that. Especially in high school." Nate nodded. "You know you don't have to do that. You like boys, Sam. It's not what I expected, but I don't want you to lie or sneak around about it."

"What? No, I didn't mean," Sam laughed and shook his head. "No, I don't like a girl. Just trying to. I don't know." He didn't really think his dad had ever had a crush on a boy who liked someone else. He thought he might find some commonalities.

"There's somebody I like, and I was.. ha. I was just about to tell him when this girl--with wings, no less--ran up to him and started kissing him." There was some of that good old-fashioned Ford bitterness.

"I've never had anything quite like that happen," Nate nodded. "But you like this guy? Does he like you? Maybe you could talk to him about it?"

Sam shrugged. "We're friends. I like him but it was pretty obvious he was into this girl." He shook his head. "He has wings too, so I'm sure he'd rather be with someone more like him, or whatever." After seeing the girl's wings, Sam was pretty sure he had no chance, ever. "I don't wanna, like.. Make stuff weird, or anything. I wanna at least stay friends with him."

Nate nodded. He put a hand out to Sam's shoulder. "I think you're going to have to bite the bullet and talk to him." The wings were an unexpected complication, but Nate had been in this world a while, he no longer questioned things like that.

Sam raised an eyebrow. "And say what? It's kinda pointless, isn't it? He has a girlfriend." He didn't mean to sound defensive or anything. He valued his dad's companionship and advice, but he wasn't really sure Nate had it right about this particular case.

"You can still be his friend." Nate ran a hand through his hair. "Everybody needs more than one friend."

"Yeah," Sam said, nodidng. "I'm just gonna do that, I think. Be his friend and not say anything. I mean, maybe he'll break up with her and start liking guys, and then I'll tell him. But right now, it's probably just better to be friends." It made sense to Sam, at least.

"Yeah, that's a good plan." Nate nodded. He really didnt' know what to say. This was not his strong point. Sam had only been 8, in his world. 8 year olds didn't have the same set of problems 16 year olds had. "I'm sure it'll work out."

Sam's eyes flicked to the screen as one of the teams scored a goal. He ate a handful of popcorn as he thought. He couldn't really change anything at this point, so he'd just have to wait and see how it went.

Sam smiled over at his dad and nodded. "Thanks, Dad." All in all, things could be worse. "This talking thing? This is good."

"It is," Nate agreed with a nod. "It's good." He smiled and took a fistful of popcorn. "We should try to make a habit of it."
