Entry tags:angel (flock), iggy, sam ford

Who: Sam Ford, Iggy and Angel
Where: Taunton. First day back!
Warnings: Nah

Angel spent most of the morning hanging close to Iggy. They'd spent a month or two in a school before. She'd made some friends, and she liked her teacher well enough.. But it hadn't really ended well. The principal had been sort of evil and tried to kill them. She was kinda excited at the idea of school, but worried too. Iggy's teachers had been nice and let her tag along for the day.

Sam had several classes with Iggy. It was convenient for that 'seeing eye human' thing, but today Angel was helping with most of that. It was a good thing; it gave Sam an example of what exactly he needed to do. Though, Iggy had to prompt Angel a few times, because she kept forgetting to tell him. She wasn't his normal translator from the flock.

Finally the morning was over and it was time for lunch. They left the classroom, Sam tagging along with the bird-kids.

Iggy was glad that Angel was there, really, mostly because he knew that if she hadn't come along he'd have been worrying about her all day and would have called home every chance he got to make sure she was still fine, it probably would have been enough to drive Navi to unplugging the phone.

He was also glad that it was lunchtime, he'd begun to realize that his attention was waning because he was hungry and had already made a mental note to remember more snacks the rest of the week.

He'd been doing fine, aside from a couple times when the halls had been more crowded than he was used to, but he stopped short once they got to the cafeteria and it's veritable wall of sound. He shook his head his head, catching Angel's hand more securely and thumping Sam's shoulder with his usual near-uncanny accuracy, "C'mon, you get to be honorary bird-kid today."

Angel squeezed Iggy's hand then smiled and nodded up at Sam. He seemed pretty nice, and he seemed to like Iggy.

Sam chuckled. "I don't know if I can eat a whole pizza and a bucket of soda today. That was kind of a one-time deal for me." And he'd felt a wee bit sick afterward. "Hey, there's an empty table here on the right," he said. "Did you guys bring your lunch, or do you want to go get something?"

"It's about half and half." Iggy said, shrugging, "Navi packed some stuff, but it's not an entire lunch, besides, I smell cheeseburgers, not going to let those go to waste." There was a crooked smile, "And that's why you're an honorary, wouldn't want to make you explode trying to keep up."

He gave Angel a gentle nudge, "Lead the way kiddo, you're cute, they'll move."

"Okay, cool. I'll save the table," Sam said, grinning. He had a lunch with him, so he went ahead and took a seat. While Iggy and Angel went to the line, Sam looked around for Candy. He wasn't sure if she'd be at school today. She might need a few days to get her bearings. Either way, he didn't see her. He'd catch up with her later.

Angel smiled and walked toward the back of the line with Iggy. "It smells good," she said, bouncing impatiently on her toes. She was hungry. As they got closer, the smells just got stronger and the guy in front of them was busily talking to his friend and seemed to be taking forever. Angel tapped the older boy on the arm. "Hey, you're not really that hungry, right?" she said when he turned to look at her.

The boy looked confused. He shrugged. "I guess not." He turned back to his buddy. "Hey, I'm gonna go." The two of them left the line and Angel moved forward triumphantly.

Iggy arched a brow at that, just slightly, but he was willing to let it go for the time being, he beamed at the lunchlady, same one who'd been there last year and had gotten used to his usual heap of food, "Three cheeseburgers for me, green jello, and whatever the kid sister's having."

His fingers were still resting lightly on Angel's shoulder just so he didn't lose track of her, "What do you want?"

Angel had been prepared to order a 'regular-sized' meal like they'd had to at her old school, but Iggy kept saying they didn't have to worry about blending in. And since he made a big order.. "Two cheeseburgers and some of those nachos and red jello." She smiled sweetly at the lunchlady. "Oh! Do you have any cookies?"

"Chocolate chip or sugar with sprinkles, one of each? Two of each?" Iggy was still grinning, he couldn't help it, really, he liked Doris. He wasn't really sure if her name was Doris or not, but that's what most people called her, and she'd never corrected anyone on it, so he figured that was probably right.

He slid his fingers along the edge of the ice bin, snagging a chocolate milk and setting it squarely on Angel's tray, along with a strawberry kiwi juice before nabbing another chocolate milk for himself along with a bottle of cream soda.

Angel approved of this haul very much. She was liking this school more and more. She waited for Iggy to take care of paying before they started back to the table where Sam was waiting.

"Hey," Sam said, opening his luchbag while Angel was placing her tray on the table. "I don't see Candy." He shrugged. "Probably still settling in."

Iggy nodded at that, settling as well, lining the edge of his tray up with the edge of the table so he knew right where it was, "She wasn't in too bad of shape when I hauled her out of the pond, I think she's been staying with Eskarina." He shrugged, "Not totally sure about that though."

He dug their lunchbags out of his backpack, handing Angel hers and opening his own, smile going crooked, "Peanutbutter and ham, that's Navi." He actually liked peanutbutter and ham, he was just surprised that Navi had remembered.

"Oh yeah? Maybe Esk dragged her off to a club, or something." Sam suspected that Esk was in every school club, and some of them had to meet at lunch. He pulled out a sandwich--regular ham and cheese for him--and unwrapped it.

Angel smiled at Iggy and his sandwich. "She's really nice, huh?" She picked up a cheeseburger first, not wanting them to get cold. "For real this time, right?" There was a little worry in her voice. What if Iggy only thought it was safe here? Maybe they were tricking him this time.

"Might be, I know she's on the cheerleading team." He answered Sam, giving Angel her sandwich, peanut butter and banana, and left the bag of apple slices where they could both reach it, smiling at Angel's question, "For real this time." He shook his head, "You know how you were in New York when you got here? I ... wasn't. I landed in some hospital, like... like a group home."

He scratched lightly at the corner of his eye to indicate why, "And I went out flying after dark, because it was in the middle of nowhere, and Navi was there and she got so angry about me being in that place she took me away, right through the window like in the stories."

Angel frowned, quiet for a moment. She took an apple slice and munched thoughtfully. "But Anne was like that too," she said softly. Anne had taken them out of the hospital, and been really nice and cooked for them and wanted to adopt them. And she was working with Jeb and the School.

Sam was quiet, letting the two of them talk. First he avoided meeting their eyes, out of politeness, but Iggy was blind and six year olds generally didn't care about being polite.

Iggy's brow furrowed slightly, it wasn't that he'd forgotten about Sam being there, it was just that this was new information, "What happened with Anne?" He shook his head then, smiling once more, though it was a little tight around the edges, "You can tell me when we get home. Don't have to worry about it now."

He turned the smile on Sam then, "We really haven't had the best luck with home or school situations before."

Sam nodded. He'd been getting that impression. "Yeah.. I'm just glad stuff is better now." He didn't want them to feel like they couldn't talk around him, but school probably wasn't the most comfortable setting.

They'd told Iggy what had happened after he joined up with them. Angel looked a little confused, but he was right. They didn't need to talk about it now.

Angel tilted her head and looked over at Sam. "I think it's nice," Angel said, hoping to reassure him. Sam's eyes widened and his face paled as Angel turned back to Iggy. "Don't you think he smells nice, Iggy?"

Now he was even more confused, but he caught up with the new turn of conversation easily enough, if a little delayed. Six months had, apparently, been long enough to get out of practice with filling in the blanks that only Angel had heard and processed, "Hn?" He intoned around a mouthful of burger.

Sometimes it was easier all around to play dumb.

Angel shrugged. "Sam smells nice." She dipped a nacho in cheese and munched on it.

Sam rubbed his forehead. "Um. Thanks." Embarrassing much? At least Iggy was ignoring it. Small favors.

Then, a short brunette around Angel's age came up to their table, two other girls a few feet behind her. "Hi," she said to Angel, waving. "I'm Katie. Do you wanna sit with us?" Angel looked over to Iggy, hesitant but hopeful, too.

Iggy wasn't really sure how to respond to that, 'hadn't noticed' was blase, and was also untrue, Sam smelled like outside, and it had taken Angel pointing it out for him to realize that's what it was.

He was glad for the interruption, smiling again, "Go on." He said with a small smile, "You know how to get my attention if you need me."

Angel smiled and nodded to Katie. "I won't be far! It's just two tables over." Katie thought her wings were cool, but she was also just nice and thought Angel could use a friend. Angel grabbed her sandwich and followed the girls over to their table.

"She's cute," Sam said. And a little bit creepy. And mostly just.. sad, the way she seemed to be worried and afraid. He pulled an orange out of his bag and started unpeeling it.

Iggy couldn't help but smile at that, "Yeah, she is." He shrugged, "Just wait until Nudge gets here, she'll ask you about a million questions about everything." He was optimistic now that there were two of them that the rest would follow.

He shrugged, "Guess I forgot to mention that Angel's kind of psychic, sorry about that." 'kind of psychic' the same way that the Dead Sea was 'kind of salty'

Sam laughed. "It's okay. I think you actually mentioned it before. I just hadn't really thought of it until she said it." He rubbed the back of his neck, trying not to look too embarrassed. It was nothing, really. It's not like Angel said 'Sam thinks you're totally cute and is madly in love with you.'

"Hey look, the loser's back." Three muscled guys walked up to the table, sneers on their ugly mugs. "This your boyfriend, Ford?" one of them asked, pointing at Iggy.

Ugh. Those guys were at it already? "Fuck off," Sam said automatically. Belatedly, he hoped Iggy wasn't offended by that kind of language, and that Angel was out of hearing range.

Iggy wasn't too worried about the language, but it did put him on guard, setting his burger down and straightening a little in his seat. It was hard to tell how close they were with all the background noise, hell, it was hard to tell how many of them there were, two at least. But he couldn't be sure.

He decided once again to steer clear of the obvious line of questioning, instead settling on: "Didn't anyone ever teach you it's not polite to point?" It was a calculated guess, really, most people pointed when referring to someone as 'this'.

Iggy hadn't even been on the bullies' radar before now. The 'leader' rolled his eyes at Iggy's admonishment. He wasn't exactly trying to win an award for 'Most Polite' here. "Better watch out, bird-boy. 'Loser's contagious." His friends chuckled.

"Yeah, so's the herpes your mom gave you last night," Sam countered.

The bully's eyes flashed with anger, his nostrils flaring.

"Oh, so I shouldn't hang out with you then." Iggy said, still just as calm as he had been before, holding almost perfectly still, "I think I can manage that, but I think maybe I should rephrase my first statement: You really shouldn't point at people."

This of course prompted a string of: "Not pointing at you, not pointing at you." from one of the others, hand circling near Iggy's shoulder, which was really all the blond had been waiting for, one hand darting up to catch the crony's wrist, slamming his hand down on the table, keeping the other boy's arm pinned, twisted at an almost unnatural angle, "Especially crazy people."

Sam was surprised by that, and almost missed the punch the leader was throwing at his face. He turned, catching it on his cheek instead of his nose. Ow. Sam didn't hesitate, though; he wouldn't want to waste all that training he'd been getting. Sam punched the other boy in the stomach.

"You need to stop now," said a little girl's voice. "Go away." Angel moved to stand beside Iggy, her hands crossed over her chest. She didn't like bullies.

"Kid's got a point." Iggy said, releasing the bully's arm almost as quickly as he'd caught it, sitting back a little more comfortably in his chair, "How about you save getting in trouble for at least the third or fourth week. Put some effort into it or something."

The boys all took a step back, checking their injuries. "Uh." One of them managed to get out a "Next time, Ford!" as they all walked off, looking way less cool than they probably wanted to.

Sam sat back down in his seat slowly. That was a little weird. He didn't know if he was supposed to say thank you to Angel or what. He tore off a few chunks of his orange and offered her some. "Want some orange?" he asked, both her and Iggy.

Angel smiled a little to Sam. "Thanks," she said, taking the fruit. "They were dumb," she said. "And boring." At least they weren't thinking 'Kill the mitants!' though. That was definitely a bonus.

Iggy sighed, relaxing in stages, fingers easing along the edge of the table again and then to his tray, the adrenaline dump fading just as quickly as it had spiked, "This a hobby of theirs or something?" He asked around a mouthful of burger, "Anybody told Ms. Frost or is it not worth the trouble?"

Sam shrugged, looking down at his orange. "I think I'm their main target. I figure now that they've seen I can actually fight back this year, they'll back off." Sam wasn't sure that theory would hold water, but it was worth a try. Last year, Sam wasn't really in shape to do anything about it. Now that he'd been healed, he'd started working out.

He caught Angel eyeing his orange and gave her another slice.

Iggy nodded then, "Okay." He was willing to let it go at that for the time being, though he was pretty sure he was on their radar now too.

There was a small smile as he reached over to ruffle Angel's hair, "She's like a puppy, you keep feeding her and you'll never get rid of her." He said to Sam, but there was no denying the affection, it was a tease, sure, but a gentle one.

Sam smiled a little. "It's fine. I packed too much food anyway. Do you want any? There's still part of an orange and a bag of Doritos." He wasn't really that hungry after the bullies. And he was wondering how he was gone to explain the shiny bruise on his cheek to his dad. Too bad he didn't have a sister with mind control.

Angel stuck her tongue out at Iggy, making a face. It made her worry about Total, though. What if he was here, but he was lost? He wouldn't be able to make a post on the internet or anything...probably. "Will Navi let Total sleep on the bed?" she asked. Not that Angel listened when Anne told her Total couldn't sleep on the bed before.

'walked into a door' was always a good excuse, because nobody believed it, but nobody argued it either!

Iggy grinned, "You haven't even been an honorary bird-kid for a full day yet and you already know how to pack. Nice." Angel's question caught him off-guard, "Is he here too? Or you mean when he gets here?" He asked, followed by: "I'm sure she will, and she'll even let him have coffee."

Sam grinned. Packing too much food may have been partially influenced by the hope that he'd eat lunch with Iggy. He slid the chips across the table to Iggy. "They're the original ones. I'm not a Cool Ranch fan."

Angel looked distressed. "I don't know. When he gets here, I guess." It bothered her that she didn't know how to find him. Sam handed her another orange slice and she took it and smiled. "He'll like you," she told Sam, sounding more chipper. "He likes anybody that gives him food."

Sam laughed, and Angel giggled, too. She was feeling more confident that Total and the rest of the flock would come soon.

"Cool," Sam said, trying to picture it. "Probably not a fan of leash laws, then?"

his brows both arched at the question, mostly on account of how quickly Angel was acclimating to the new surroundings, "Sure. You know how to get ahold of me if you need me. Angel made friends quickly. "Yeah, I know where your classes are if I need to find you. I'll meet you outside when school's over if everything goes okay." There was still a little bit of tension, but so far she didn't have a reason to think anyone here was evil. Even those bullies were too dumb to be evil. She smiled at Iggy and Sam and waved before turning back to the girls.

"Hey," Sam called to her and Angel turned around. "Thanks for saving my butt, kiddo." He smiled at the girl.

"Maybe they'll be too embarrassed to say anything." One could always hope, anyway. Sam finished the last piece of his orange and tossed the peels in his paper bag.

Sam shrugged. "Heh. I guess. They're on the football team. They think they're badass but. Well. You saw 'em." So to speak. "They're not, like.. hovering bullies. "Huh." He shrugged, he sort of recognized the name, but he wasn't entirely sure why, he figured it was mostly because he was one of the school's founders, "I like this one better than that one anyway, mostly on account of I don't have wing-cramps by the time I get home from keeping them all tucked down all the time."
