Who: Candy & Rob
Where: Moroccan restaurant in New York
When: Saturday night
Warnings: Possible. Will update if necessary

Rob still wasn't entirely used to Portkey travel, but he figured it was nothing that a good dinner and some equally good liquor and some company couldn't fix. He was glad to find that the place was right about where he remembered it, and seemed to be run by the same family, he waited in the lobby, keeping an eye on the sidewalk outside.

He wasn't dressed up, at least not so far as he was concerned, but he was dressed well at the very least, black slacks, a green silk shirt and a vest to round it all out. Even when he knew exactly where he was, he still exuded lost puppy vibes.

Candy wasn't dressed up at all, she wasn't a dress up sort of girl. Jeans and a black tanktop and a quick brush through the hair, and she was ready to go. She'd made an effort (for her) by putting on some bubblegum Bonne Bell lipgloss.

True to her word, she'd parked her glyph on the roof and dissolved the craft into light before climbing down the service ladder. Dusting herself off, she walked into the lobby, scanning the room with her mismatched eyes.

Rob beamed, "Candy, I presume? If not you should come along anyway, we'll make a party of it." For something that should have come off as a line it didn't, it sounded genuine. Just one of those things he'd had a long time to practice at.

She chuckled and shook her head. "You presume correctly. And do you always invite strangers out with you?" She couldn't help but be a little amused, he reminded her of John Mischief in a way that comforted her and set her at ease around him. He'd also said a lot of things that should've been flirty but weren't.

Another grin, "Oh good, wouldn't be the first time I was wrong about something like that, and I've always managed to salvage the situation before, but there's a first time for everything."

He shrugged at her question, offering an arm and following the head waiter through the restaurant, "Well of course, how else are you supposed to meet new people?"

He grinned when they were lead to one of the alcove tables, just like the rest, low to the ground with cushions for seating, only with a curtain to shut out the rest of the restaurant if they felt like it.

"Usually I don't have a problem meeting new people. And sometimes, they actually don't want to kill me. It's nice." She chuckled and sat down on a cushion, braiding her long black hair to keep it out of her face as she ate. She shut the curtain before sitting back down and slowly drawing her index finger and thumb together on one hand. As she drew them apart, light streamed between them. She plucked the strand with her other hand, then moved to tie back her braid with the strand of light.

"Have you eaten here before?"

His brows arched slightly at the light manipulation, but more at the fact that she'd closed the curtain. He didn't mind of course, but he hadn't been going to presume.

He nodded as he settled, "I have, not necessarily this very one, since I wasn't sure if it would be here, but there's one quite like it back home."

She nodded and started to examine the menu. "So you can help me order, then, while you tell me your story." Candy's grin grew even more lopsided, and she shrugged. "Everyone has one, and I like hearing them. They're so less boring than my own."

He laughed, shaking his head, "It's fairly simple, really, the ordering, that is, just tell them if you prefer chicken, lamb, or beef, and they'll do the rest."

He shrugged, leaning back, making himself comfortable and looking wholly at ease on the cushion, half-lounging, "The story is longer, starts back at the dawn of time, well, the dawn of recorded time, anyway. Back when the sky was more amethyst than blue, when the butterflies were as big as blackbirds, back when the moon was nearly as bright as the sun on some nights and the water was pure and clear and every handful tasted of honeysuckle." He was liable to go on like this for some time.

"I once rode on a moth the size of a dog. That wasn't as fun as it sounds." She grinned and leaned forward to listen to him, propping her head on a hand. "Do you ever get tired?"

(Reply to this)

"Tired of what?" This was a very good question, really, because there were a lot of things he got tired of, but there were more things he couldn't get enough of, really.

He grinned at the polite cough from the other side of the curtain, reaching over to slide it open again to admit their waiter with the tea service and a wine list.

"Existing." She looked over the wine list, grinning and picking a dessert wine, a port, and looked up at him expectantly. With a glance, she dared him to card her.

Rob's brow was arched as well, trying his hardest not to just grin at this, managing to look serious, as he imagined an automobile mogul should look.

He smiled at the lack of questions, accepting the small glass of tea, just holding it between both hands, shrugging once the waiter had vanished again, "Sometimes I do."

When the waiter moved off with her order, she grinned at Rob over her water. "If that hadn't worked, the princess card might have." She shrugged and thought to herself. "I'm sure I would too. Get tired. I just hope you find something every now and then to remind you why living is good."

He laughed then, nodding, "That's one thing I'm particularly good at." He shrugged, "Not saying it doesn't get lonely, but that's to be expected, I suppose, and I make the most of what I've got, which is ... quite a bit more, here, than it was back home, at least on the surface."

"It's okay here." She sipped more water, shrugging. "It could be worse. It could be Chickentown." She wrinkled her nose. "Where I was born."

His nose wrinkled at that, shaking his head, "I can only imagine. I certainly wouldn't want to live there, if the name is anything to go by."

He thought about that for a moment, finally shaking his head, "Doesn't even sound like a place I'd even like to visit."

"It's not now. It was, once, back when it was called Murkittville. There's a lighthouse there that could call the sea to ... not another world, just a world that's sort of parallel to ours. I miss it." She tucked her hair behind her ears, a few strands having escaped her braid.

"Why the change?" He asked, sipping carefully at his tea, "Town council decide Chickentown sounded more friendly and sanitary?" A shrug followed, "And it's natural to miss home, I suppose, even if you hated it while you were there."

"That's what I wondered. I did a school report on it. The founders left to go to the Abarat for slave trading and to buy magic, but they never came back. The last surviving Murkitt killed himself in the only hotel in town when he thought his wife Diamanda left him for another man. She didn't, though, she was a priestess in the Abarat. And that's what I miss. The other world. Not Chickentown. It flooded and dissolved off of the map, thank goodness." She chuckled and smiled when the waiter came back to set the wine down. Thanking him, she took a sip.

He smiled at the waiter, "You might as well bring the bottle, we'll be here a while."

He nodded to Candy once the man had vanished again, "That's happened more often than people realize. Cities being vanished from the maps. Well, from the actual terrain, not just from the maps."

"Usually not because a guy who's stalking me summons a flood, though." She fidgeted a little, looking as guilty as she felt.

"Ah, not generally. Though floods do seem to be a popular way to go about it." he shrugged, "That and the earthquakes." And volcanoes, but he didn't talk about that one, that hit too close to home.

"I'll take floods. I like the water, enough to be killed by it someday. Not now." She shrugged a little bit, not pressing the subject of the other natural disasters.

"I intend to go in my sleep." He said with a smile, "Surrounded by fat grandchildren." There was the briefest pause, "Which I'll probably have to borrow from someone, that may prove problematic."
