who. Lois Lane and Death
what. Waffles. Need I say more?
when. Recently
where. London

Death knew how relationships worked. Beyond being part of one, she also had seen so many people come and go that she could probably have worked a side job as a couples therapist if the urge to do so ever struck her. Lois had been having some trouble with Clark. And beyond that, her son had shown up at least a decade older than he should have been. Having as much knowledge as she did, Death knew the sort of thing that would do Lois good. There was no better cure for a rough patch than waffles.

Death didn't appear in the middle of Lois' apartment. That would have been rude and would probably caught Lois off guard. Instead, she made herself show up right in front of Lois' door. After a knock, Death rocked back on her heels and waited for a response. She hadn't really given her friend a warning for this outing. She felt Lois could use the pleasant response.

That made Lois chuckle. "I can believe that one. How've you been lately?" She knew Didi wasn't human but that didn't mean Didi didn't have feelings or problems.

Death smiled, "I've been pretty good. My family's been behaving themselves. My friends are pretty happy. George is fine. The other reapers are, too." Well, Will was going through things, but he'd turn out okay.

"I'm glad," Lois said genuinely. "How many reapers do you have now?"

"A few." She counted on her hand. "In this part of the world? At least five. I hope I"m not forgetting anyone."

The reporter in Lois was wistful for one short moment that she could interview Didi or other beings like this, but it wasn't possible. At least not for anything that could be published.

"It sounds like you're close to all of them. I'm glad you're happy." It wasn't often Lois relaxed and smiled like this, let down her guard. It was refreshing. "I'm glad you came by, too."

Death didn't do interviews. Not until the people interviewing her were dead. Then, she made some exceptions. "Thanks." Death smiled brightly, as per her usual. She led them down a few long streets and eventually they stopped before the waffle house. "Here we are!"

Lois got the feeling Didi wasn't going to talk much about herself right now. So much for distracting her while Lois tried to gather her thoughts.

"You asked about Clark," she finally said as they walked. "I'm not sure where to start." She was saved from figuring it out as they arrived at the waffle house and she smiled. "I can't remember the last time I came to one of these. Is this the best one in London?"

Death wasn't here to talk about herself. She was trying to check up on her friend. So she wasn't going to be overly chatty about things. Especially when there wasn't much to chat about.

"It's not technically the best. There's one that uses a lot more expensive stuff. But I like this better. It's homey." The two were led to a table in the corner. Death sat down in the booth. Lois was across from her. "You're... are you avoiding talking about Clark?"

Lois looked around, keeping the place in mind. "I like it, it is homey."

Once they were seated and Didi brought up Clark, Lois buried her face in her hands with a small groan. "Didi, I screwed things up so badly."

"Oh, I'm sure it wasn't that bad." Death didn't need to look at a menu. She knew what she would be getting. "What happened?" She asked, leaning forward on her elbows and looking at Lois sympathetically.

"I sort of told you what happened, didn't I? I haven't seen him since the beginning of the week. Not since we... argued." Lois felt like laying her head down on the table. Instead, her eyes drifted over the menu, not really seeing anything. "I said the most horrible thing," she said slowly and softly. She wished she could take it back, or rewind time.

"What'd you say?" Death asked softly. She waited patiently for a moment, and then added. "You don't have to say if you don't want."

Lois shook her head. "I'd rather not." Which was a nice way for Lois to tell a friend absolutely no. It was a trainwreck to even think about, much less repeat.

"How much do you know about my life and my world?"

"Mmm." Death rested her hands on the table and her chin on the back of her hands. "I know enough. Why?"

"When that other Clark told me that he and Superman were the same," her voice was lowered considerably, "and we came out of fiction, or however that works, I watched everything I could get my hands on and read what I could. It's not..." she paused and started over. "It wasn't a picnic seeing an outside, objective view of how I treated my partner while fawning over Superman. I never realized how much I'd hurt him. How much it must've hurt Superman -- Kal-El -- to know I loved him but treated his other self like dirt at times."

Lois wouldn't use the word humbling out loud, but if she admitted it deep down, it had been somewhat of a slap in the face. A good wake up call.

Death nodded. "At least you're aware now? Better to see it in yourself and be able to stop it this time around, hm?" She would have continued by a waitress came up and took their order.

Lois hadn't really studied the menu, so she ordered one of the first things she saw, a waffle meal combo.

She waited until the waitress had left before continuing in a whisper, "That's the problem, Didi. I thought I had. I promised myself I wouldn't treat him like that again. And then I went and said something completely horrible to him. He's angry at me. I don't understand... I don't understand how a man like that can love me with all I've done to him." No matter how many times she'd treated Clark badly or jeopardized something by putting herself in danger, he'd always been there to save her. And even after this, he let her know he still loved her.

"Oh Lois," Death sighed quietly. "You deserve every happiness." She smiled a tired looking smile, "Every relationship has its problems. You have to work to stay together and get through fights. And... you should ask him sometime. How he loves you. Why. Maybe that would help you understand."

Lois wanted to ask him how he could love her considering a few other things too. She had her guesses, but she'd been arrogant before thinking she knew everything. Lois Lane, ace reporter, wasn't always right. She was quiet as she mulled this over. She wondered, though, about the tired smile and gave Didi a concerned, questioning look.

She knew relationships took work but she thought over Didi's words in this new context. Her relationship with Richard hadn't been easy. Her relationship with Superman? She'd apparently given up on that before, hadn't she? Thought they couldn't make it work. Had that driven him away?

"I do plan on asking him, when he talks to me again. I have a lot more questions for him." She paused, biting her thumbnail. "I hate hurting him. The look on his face... when I told him the world didn't need saving. At the time I didn't understand the entire situation. I still don't think I do. This time I hurt him bad enough he's stayed away for a few days."

"Well," Death straighted a little and leaned her face on a hand. "I don't think you've lost him. All you need to do is talk. This is good warm up. You can sort your thoughts over waffles." Almost as if on cue, the waitress returned with their plates. Death smiled warmly at the young woman before she went off, back to serve the next table. "Why'd you say the world didn't need saving?"

She shook her head simply. "I know I haven't lost him. He left me coffee one morning after we argued." She struggled to keep her voice un-sheepish. She'd hurt him, and he was leaving her coffee, the best invention since... anything, really. "I left him a voicemail, and he left a note the next morning saying he loved me. That's what almost kills me, you know?" her voice rose just a little. "That he doesn't really get angry. That it's so hard to stay angry at him for anything. It'd almost be easier that way." Anger instead of hurt usually was.

Lois paused as the waitress came by and gave her a tight, brief smile. She picked up her fork but didn't begin to eat yet. Her voice was a little calmer. "I said that because I'd been hurt. Badly. And I was angry, and I'd moved on. He left without saying anything, Didi. I always wondered if I'd done something... I still don't know if I did. So I finally wrote the editorial, and it helped me find the closure I needed. Until he came back, of course."

"You know," Death hadn't really started to eat yet, either. For a minute she played with a strawberry that sat atop her waffles. "It just sounds like you two still have a lot to talk about. That what it sounds like from here."

Lois nodded, resting her chin in her hand, almost looking glum. "I know. I thought we'd covered everything. I thought I was... adjusted. But the dynamics are so complicated. I think I rushed into things."

She looked up, realizing Didi hadn't started to eat either, and straightened a little. She started cutting into her food. "You said this was one of the best waffle houses, right? Don't let my complicated life stop you from enjoying your food," she said with a small smile.

Death nodded. "Well. You caught your mistake. Go slow. You two can take your time here and have fun. There isn't as much pressure with you knowing about his identity." Death took a bite. She loved the food here. "It's good, isnt' it?" She asked of the meal.

Didi's words made her smile a little. "Are you sure you can't read minds? Cause that's been my plan."

Lois made a sound of contentment at the first bite. "I've been trying to lay off foods like this ever since I had Jason, but this is divine."
