who. Lois Lane and Death
what. Waffles. Need I say more?
when. Recently
where. London

Death knew how relationships worked. Beyond being part of one, she also had seen so many people come and go that she could probably have worked a side job as a couples therapist if the urge to do so ever struck her. Lois had been having some trouble with Clark. And beyond that, her son had shown up at least a decade older than he should have been. Having as much knowledge as she did, Death knew the sort of thing that would do Lois good. There was no better cure for a rough patch than waffles.

Death didn't appear in the middle of Lois' apartment. That would have been rude and would probably caught Lois off guard. Instead, she made herself show up right in front of Lois' door. After a knock, Death rocked back on her heels and waited for a response. She hadn't really given her friend a warning for this outing. She felt Lois could use the pleasant response.

Lois needed a hug. It said a lot that she hung on for a few seconds more she might normally have.

"I don't really remember if I had dinner or not," Lois shrugged one shoulder. "But don't tell Jason I said that," she remarked with a half-grin.

"Oh." Lois hadn't meant anything by what she said. "Didi, I'm never even home. Don't worry. We still talk... just a lot's happened. I think it only seems awhile."

"Don't worry. Secret's safe." Lois smiled when she mentioned Jason. That was a good thing. "And... we can get dinner and desert. I'm taking you to a waffle house. I'm a waffle house expert thanks to my reapers." She smirked.

"Do you need a minute to get ready?" Death peeked behind Lois' shoulder. She knew there was a computer with a half finished article sitting on a desk just behind that wall.

Lois raised an eyebrow, but still smiling. "A waffle house? You like waffles now? Is that George's influence?"

She shook her head. "Nope." Lois reached for her coat and shrugged it on, then grabbed a small notepad from her purse. "Just let me leave a note for Jason. Is this waffle house in London?"

"I have always liked waffles. I didn't always know the top ten waffle houses in London." She grinned. "George helped with that, yes."

"It's not too far off, actually." Death waited as Lois scribbled a note and then they were off. Lois locked the door behind her and then Didi took her arm. "So. I feel as though you have a story to tell. And I'm all ears. Clark. Jason. I don't know where you should start, but I'm interested."

Lois laughed a little as she stuck the note to the fridge, the first place Jason was bound to check when he got home. Though before they left, she tried so very hard to not glance at the balcony behind her. She tried. Very hard. But at the last second, before they stepped out the door, she took a one-second glance over her shoulder. It seemed casual though, like she was glancing back at the apartment.

She enjoyed going out with Didi. She didn't have a lot of friends outside of work. "Ah... well, I'm not sure where I should start either," she said with a small, maybe nervous laugh.

Death caught the glance. She was good at catching the little things people did. It was pretty telling. "Well," she said when they were out on the street, "Think about what you want to start and end with. Good. Bad. Ugly." A pause. "And keep in mind that we'll be getting something for desert if there is room after the waffles. You might want to start with the good stuff and go from there. If you want."

"That's a good philosophy for life, Didi." She glanced over. "You know, one of these days, you're going to come for me, to reap me, and I'll think we're just going to hang out again." It was a wry remark. Lois Lane had 99 lives and she sometimes went through them quickly.

"Where to start... What do you know?"

"That's how it usually goes," Death said, smile on her face taking on a slightly mysterious edge. "Dying isn't horrible, you know. But you don't have to worry about that." She waved her free hand. "You've got some time."

"Well. Everything." Death grinned. "How about Jason? How is he? How are you two getting along? How are you dealing? What's he like?"

Lois was still wry. "Good to know."

"Jason is... amazing. I can't believe he's here. And as a teenager. He's the best son I could've ever hoped for. He turned out so great I know I didn't raise him on my own." As she talked, Lois had to fight back a few tears. This was one of the few times she got emotional, talking about her son. She'd never planned on being a mother, but Jason was special.

"Aw." Death smiled warmly. Her hand went up and down her back, soothingly. "I'm glad he's here. I'm glad you're happy." A pause. "And, you never know. Maybe you just raised an incredible kid on your own. Stranger things have happened."

That made Lois chuckle. "I can believe that one. How've you been lately?" She knew Didi wasn't human but that didn't mean Didi didn't have feelings or problems.

Death smiled, "I've been pretty good. My family's been behaving themselves. My friends are pretty happy. George is fine. The other reapers are, too." Well, Will was going through things, but he'd turn out okay.

"I'm glad," Lois said genuinely. "How many reapers do you have now?"

"A few." She counted on her hand. "In this part of the world? At least five. I hope I"m not forgetting anyone."

The reporter in Lois was wistful for one short moment that she could interview Didi or other beings like this, but it wasn't possible. At least not for anything that could be published.

"It sounds like you're close to all of them. I'm glad you're happy." It wasn't often Lois relaxed and smiled like this, let down her guard. It was refreshing. "I'm glad you came by, too."

Death didn't do interviews. Not until the people interviewing her were dead. Then, she made some exceptions. "Thanks." Death smiled brightly, as per her usual. She led them down a few long streets and eventually they stopped before the waffle house. "Here we are!"

Lois got the feeling Didi wasn't going to talk much about herself right now. So much for distracting her while Lois tried to gather her thoughts.

"You asked about Clark," she finally said as they walked. "I'm not sure where to start." She was saved from figuring it out as they arrived at the waffle house and she smiled. "I can't remember the last time I came to one of these. Is this the best one in London?"

Death wasn't here to talk about herself. She was trying to check up on her friend. So she wasn't going to be overly chatty about things. Especially when there wasn't much to chat about.

"It's not technically the best. There's one that uses a lot more expensive stuff. But I like this better. It's homey." The two were led to a table in the corner. Death sat down in the booth. Lois was across from her. "You're... are you avoiding talking about Clark?"

Lois looked around, keeping the place in mind. "I like it, it is homey."

Once they were seated and Didi brought up Clark, Lois buried her face in her hands with a small groan. "Didi, I screwed things up so badly."

"Oh, I'm sure it wasn't that bad." Death didn't need to look at a menu. She knew what she would be getting. "What happened?" She asked, leaning forward on her elbows and looking at Lois sympathetically.

"I sort of told you what happened, didn't I? I haven't seen him since the beginning of the week. Not since we... argued." Lois felt like laying her head down on the table. Instead, her eyes drifted over the menu, not really seeing anything. "I said the most horrible thing," she said slowly and softly. She wished she could take it back, or rewind time.

"What'd you say?" Death asked softly. She waited patiently for a moment, and then added. "You don't have to say if you don't want."

Lois shook her head. "I'd rather not." Which was a nice way for Lois to tell a friend absolutely no. It was a trainwreck to even think about, much less repeat.

"How much do you know about my life and my world?"

"Mmm." Death rested her hands on the table and her chin on the back of her hands. "I know enough. Why?"

"When that other Clark told me that he and Superman were the same," her voice was lowered considerably, "and we came out of fiction, or however that works, I watched everything I could get my hands on and read what I could. It's not..." she paused and started over. "It wasn't a picnic seeing an outside, objective view of how I treated my partner while fawning over Superman. I never realized how much I'd hurt him. How much it must've hurt Superman -- Kal-El -- to know I loved him but treated his other self like dirt at times."

Lois wouldn't use the word humbling out loud, but if she admitted it deep down, it had been somewhat of a slap in the face. A good wake up call.
