Who: Henn and Steve
Where: Beach at Tortuga
When: Tuesday afternoon
What: Sparring for fun
Warnings: Hen's sweary on occasion, shouldn't be anything worse than that.

Henn of course knew right where the portkey dropoff was, and she'd been keeping an eye on the spot while she stretched. She'd only been on the island a few minutes herself, limbering up and letting herself get used to the difference in climate between London and the Caribbean.

The weather wasn't bad, really, in fact it was actually quite balmy, and there was a nice breeze, in the shade it wasn't bad at all, which she was thankful for, since she needed what she called 'millionty proof' sunscreen just so she wouldn't burn.

She was in her usual workout clothes, a tank top and yoga pants, the outfit left most of her tattoos visible, she had her hair pulled back to keep it out of her way, running herself through a starting kata just to make sure she was ready.

Steve still found himself a bit thrown off by portkeys. They were strange to him, especially when he had to use them to go out of country because the journey always felt longer. Yet he seemed to manage because he appeared on the beach not long after Henn had arrived.

Or more, 'fell onto the beach' was probably a more appropriate description, because he landed with a thump on his hands and knees. Steve shook his head and stood up, brushing the sand off of himself. For this workout session he'd chosen a sleeveless white shirt and a pair of black and silver running shorts. The outfit showed off his toned form quite adequately.

He spotted who he assumed was his workout partner for the day apparently preparing herself and smiled, walking over.

"Hey."

Henn had winced at the landing, padding over to make sure he was okay, meeting him somewhere halfway and smiling, "Hey. Steve, I presume? I'm Henriette Turner, though mom's the only one that calls me by my full name, most people just go with Henn."

She was already eying him, weighing her options, really, "What sort of ground rules do you usually start with?"

Thankfully Steve was a pretty hard man to hurt, so the fall brought nothing but a bit of discomfort from the warm sand grating against his skin. He offered out his hand to Henn, always figuring it was best to make good impressions with those he was going to be mock-fighting with lest the mock be dropped.

"A pleasure to meet you, Henn." He noticed the eyeing. "I really don't like putting out too many rules. I assume you have enough sense to know the line between sparring and actual fighting. If either of us needs it to stop, I assume a firm 'stop' will be enough to end the spar." Steve offered, smiling.

She nodded, tugging the band in her hair to tighten it a little, make sure it was secure, honestly he reminded her of one of her senseis from back home, "You've got some sense," She said with a smile as she accepted the handshake, "Good to know."

She cocked her head then, nodding towards the shadier part of the beach, "C'mon, might as well start in the shade, no sense overheating right off the bat."

The dog tags around his neck jingled as he walked over toward the shade. It was a good plan, because the air around them only seemed to be getting warmer, even with the nice breeze from the ocean.

"I didn't bring any sparring weapons, so I was thinking we could just do hand to hand."

"That's fine." She said, rolling her shoulders as she followed, "I prefer weaponless, actually, it's a family thing." Or her way of railing against a family thing, really, but it amounted to the same in the end.

She kicked off her sandals, leaving them at the foot of a tree, toes curling into the sand as she settled herself into a ready position, arching a brow at him, she was one of the few people who preferred taking the defensive as opposed to the offensive.

Seeing she was going shoeless, Steve decided to as well. No, he wasn't quite used to actually sparring on sand, but it would be an interesting change up. He studied her with his bright blue eyes, noting her defensive stance with a faint smile.

Steve took two steps forward quickly, making it look like he was going to go for a punch to the gut though really he was tense and ready to duck in the event of a deflect or returned offensive move.

One arm came down to deflect, pivoting at her waist as she did so, shifting her weight from her front foot to her back foot.

She could tell he was still on guard, but used the movement of the deflection to push off with, letting his arm follow through on the movement even though she'd sidestepped enough that he shouldn't connect with anything but air.

He knew that had been an easy attack, but it had also given him some idea of how Henri moved. So he pivoted and immediately lunged at her again, this time reaching out to hopefully grab her wrist, even though his body language made it appear he was going to just try to punch her again.

She was smiling crookedly, the expression bordering on grim, she always looked a little grim when she was concentrating.

Not realizing that he was going for a grab, she brought her arm down to deflect again, planting her weight more firmly as she did so.

Of course he grabbed her wrist at the last minute and twisted her arm behind her, holding it there. One of his legs swept along hers as he tried to bring Henri down to the sand.

Henn made a sound like a startled goose, but she was laughing all the same, letting him take her down, but hooking her own ankle around his sweeping leg as she did so, fully intent on taking him down with her.

He'd had a feeling she would bring him down as well, as that was the general reaction to have your feet knocked out from under you. So Steve fell with her, but immediately went on the offensive. With his hand still around her wrist he did his best to once again twist her arm behind her back, attempting to pin her face-down in the sand.

Henn was used to shadow-boxing, but she wasn't all that rusty, as soon as she felt his balance shift she twisted her arm in his grasp, not to break free so much as to brace herself by holding onto his wrist with the same hand that was being held, yanking him towards her even as she rolled, trying to do basically the same thing he'd intended to do: pin him facedown.

Steve thought the move was well played and drew a laugh from him. He went lax and allowed her to start pushing him down. Yet as he went down he made sure to get his free hand under him and once he was facing the sand immediately pushed up. He was trying to startle her off of his back.

There was another startled-goose sound, but she laughed once more, bounding to her feet again and backing off to let him up, "You're good, but let me see what you can really do."

She arched a brow, shifting her weight from foot to foot, ready and waiting again.

Once she was off of him he rolled and stood up, laughing a bit as he brushed the sand off. Then Steve studied her, eyebrows raised and blue eyes gleaming. He hadn't sparred like this since Tony had been around and had forgotten how fun it was.

"I don't know. I think I'll let you take the offensive this time." He teased.

She laughed, still practically bouncing from foot to foot, "Aww, but where's the fun in that?" She didn't wait for him to answer before she darted forward, using the left hook as a distraction for the flat-handed shove at his chest with her right hand, mostly just intent on taking him off balance.

Sometimes Steve felt bad while sparring, because many of his skills had been chemically induced. He had become strong because of what the military had done to him. Sure, everything else had been his own doing (the honing in of his skills, the quick decisions on how to use them) but unlike Henri his strength had been given to him.

Part of him wanted to go easy on her, but another part realized she probably wouldn't appreciate it so he ducked the left hook that was never meant to hit him anyway. He saw the hand that had been moving for his chest and grabbed Henri's wrist quickly, pulling her down to the ground hard.

She 'oof'ed as she landed heavily on her back, twisting herself over and rolling to her feet once more, "You're fast." There was both awe and appreciation in the tone, it had been a while since she'd had anyone who could keep up with her.

Her own reflexes and strength were just the usual trained-from-birth honed-sharp. She did, however, have other powers at her disposal, but she was saving those for a last-ditch option, the same as she would if it were a real fight.

"Thanks. You aren't too shabby yourself." He flashed a grin in her direction, eyes studying her. Then Steve took a few fast steps forward, aiming to hit her in the stomach.

Henn beamed at this, twisting herself sideways almost too late, catching his arm with both hands and using his own momentum against him, keeping her own center of gravity low, if her opponent had been anyone else it would have ended up a throw, she rather suspected he'd catch himself before then however.

He was thrown, but he turned it into a front flip and landed on his feet, hands resting in the sand as he remained crouched.

"Very nice!" Steve commented, blue eyes sparkling.

Henn was still low as well, grin just spreading, only just starting to have to catch her breath, "That was pretty spiffy, actually." She took a bare moment to check her pulse, fingertips resting against the crook of her elbow, nodding once, "Let's see what else you've got, chief."
