Sign language was the next best option at noisy concerts when not everybody had a headset -- and sometimes the only thing to watch for younger road-kids like her at ballets and whatnot. Most of the roadies Sable and her mother travelled with knew a little, and Sable was no exception -- though of course their own version was their own in so many ways as well. But she could follow handspelling well enough.
She smiles to star. "Not a robot toaster. We actually didn't have a toaster at all for very long. It jumped off the shelf when we went over a pothole one day and almost set our van on fire. That was the end of that. Besides, the fewer electric things we used in there, the better. In the end, we kept adapters for the computers and a generator we used when we didn't want to or couldn't stay at motels, and that was all. The waffle house makes toast better anyway."
