Who: Sam and Candy
What: Talking about srs stuff
Warnings: Nah.. maybe language?

Sam had been pacing around his room enough that he thought he was going to wear the carpet thin. He'd been trying to think of how to talk to his dad, and eventually came back to the conclusion that he shouldn't tell Dad. With everything already so messed up between them, now obviously wasn't the time. And it wasn't like it was urgent or anything. But Sophie seemed to think it would be best if the Ford men talked. Sometimes he doubted the woman's sanity.

He needed someone he could talk to. Sophie was great, but now that she knew there was something hanging there, she would either keep telling him to tell Nathan, or she would try to figure out what it was. Even though he thought Sophie would take it better than Nate, for some reason he felt like it was one thing he couldn't tell Sophie first. His Dad needed to know before Sophie. He just...did. Even if that meant yelling or getting kicked out of the house.

He needed to get out and clear his head. He didn't have his old friends here, but he was making new ones. He'd asked Candy out to grab a bite to eat, and was heading to the little diner. It was just a few blocks away, and Sam's legs weren't hurting as much so he walked. The bell on the door rang as he opened it and he looked around the small establishment to see if Candy had beaten him here.

She had, if only because portkeying over and then taking a glyph were both very fast methods of travel. She'd parked the glyph in a nearby park, dissolving it with a wave of her hand before anyone could notice. Some of the light was still in her hair as she sat in a booth, sipping a water and looking over the menu. Sam was a good friend, so she hadn't dressed up or anything, just thrown on some jeans and a tank top and pulled her hair back into a loose ponytail (that had of course come undone during her flight).

When she saw Sam enter, her eyes lifted from the menu, and she waved to him. Dropping her legs from the bench seat across from her, she folded them up under her body.

Sam smiled some as he walked over to Candy's table. "Your hair looks different.. It's nice." He sat down across from her in the booth, shifting around on the vinyl to find a comfortable spot.

"How are you?" he asked, glancing at the menu. He was pretty familiar with the menu. The late hours and proximity made it a good place to go if he needed to get out of the house.

Candy blinked. "My hai - oh!" She shook it out, letting the light dissolve further, blushing a little. "Sorry, I must have been standing right in the middle of that glyph when I dissolved it."

She smiled and shrugged when he asked how she was. "I'm okay, how are you? That's more important right now."

"I still don't really understand what that means, but it looks cool." It was strange having friends who did magic and had powers and stuff. He wasn't a fanboy, though, and just treated them like normal friends.

He shrugged. "I don't know. Okay, I guess. Trying to figure out stuff with my dad." He wasn't really sure how much he wanted to say. "Do you know what you're going to order?"

"Oh, basically I make a flying hovercraft thing out of light and magic. When I make it go away, though, the magic goes into the air, and I guess it got stuck." She shrugged and smiled at him, nodding with understanding about family issues.

"I don't - my dad and I never really talked, but it was like that a lot with my mom. Trying to figure out how to tell her things. And I think I'm just going to get a burger and a strawberry shake."

Sam tilted his head, smirking a little. "You got magic stuck in your hair? Better than gum, I guess." It was still a little strange, having friends who did magic and had super powers. He was used to very talented friends, but not quite like that. Still, he wasn't a fanboy by nature, so he just acted normally around them.

"Yeah, my dad.. Well, you met him at the play. He's kinda..standoffish, I guess. In his world, I died when I was eight and I guess it messed him up. He.. I don't know. It's like he's afraid to acknowledge that I'm alive, or something." That wasn't really fair, but it was how Sam felt, sometimes. "He just.. he's really different from the Dad I know and it sucks."

The waiter came by to take their order. "Two burgers and strawberry shakes." He looked over to Candy to give her a chance to change her mind before the waiter left, if she wanted.

"Gum in the hair is the worst. My mom just cut my hair once, she didn't even read that you can get it out with peanut butter." She chuckled a little, shrugging and smiling.

Nodding, she looked a little sad to think about how it must have been hard for Sam's father to lose his son at a small age. It would be hard on any parent, even her terrible, horrible father. "That makes sense." She paused, smiling at the waiter and nodding her thanks. "I know I'd be scared if it were me in his situation."

Sam ran his hands through his hair. "I just.. I don't know how to act. I feel like I can't tell him anything. He doesn't respond when I tell him I love him. At all. Which. I guess I get. He doesn't know me, he hasn't seen me since I was eight. I guess I'm lucky he even acknowledges I'm his son at all. But it's like walking on eggshells at home. He's a recovering alcoholic and I'm afraid anything I say could make things worse. I don't know how to talk to him."

That, Candy understood. "My dad was an alcoholic. I don't really have any advice on how to talk to your dad, but hiding, that I can help with." She sighed a little, sipping her water. "But your dad is at least trying. That's a good thing. It might be awkward right now, but he's trying."

Sam nodded, half covering his face with his hand as he sighed. "I guess, yeah." He shrugged, sitting back a little when the food was delivered. After the waiter left, Sam shifted awkwardly, looking at his burger without taking a bite yet. "Sorry to unload on you. I've just had a lot of crap on my mind lately."

"It's okay, I understand. Everybody's got their stress. It's really all right." She had been having issues of her own, but it wasn't like she wanted to share them, not really. She admired Sam for his ability to speak his mind about how he felt.

"You're elegant as all hell, you know that?" He leaned back in the booth, unable to eat, really. "I'm sure you've got stuff going on too, but you're completely graceful about it." Reminded him a little of Sophie. "Wish I was like that, sometimes." People seemed to see right through him. It was unsettling.

"Hey, thanks again for coming to the play. Sorry Sophie was terrible." He'd tried to warn her. Though words really didn't express how truly, truly hard it was to watch.

"Thank you." She laughed and ducked her head a little. "Might be because I have a princess in here with me." She took a sip of her shake, smiling around the straw. It was good, and she closed her eyes in momentary sugar induced bliss.

His mentioning the play made her laugh, and she shook her head. "It was fantastic. I know it's not supposed to be a comedy, but I smiled for two hours. I needed that."

Sam smiled. "Yeah, that's the best thing to do. That's usually how I deal with her plays." At least when he didn't have his iPod jammed in his ears. "The other guys think I'm crazy for going to all of her shows, but it makes her feel good. And it isn't that much torture." He smiled weakly. "It's still playing for one more week, if you want another chance to smile."

"I'd like that. I've had a stressful few months." Which was really the understatement of the century, but she didn't need to tell him that. "You could use the company too, I'm sure."

"Yeah. I could. I'd like that." Sam sort of realized he was using his nightly attendance of play as a sort of way to avoid spending too much time getting close to other people. That was probably a stupid thing.

"Sophie'll think we're dating," he warned her.

"We're not, though, so it doesn't matter what other people think." She shrugged and half smiled. It was probably too soon still for her to date anyone else anyway, even if Sam was really nice.

"Right," he said, nodding. "It wouldn't be awful for her to think that, anyway. Would get her to stop asking me all the time if I've found a girlfriend yet," he said with a nervous laugh.

She looked at him, cocking her head to the side. "Why's she care so much? It's your life." Shrugging a little, she thought about it for a moment. "If you want her to think that, you don't have to tell her otherwise. Up to you."

He shrugged. "It's just who she is. She's sort of like a mom slash... something. I don't know. She thinks it would be cute, or something. She was asking if I had anyone I liked after my first day of school here, practically." He didn't seem too upset by it. He usually had fun pretending to be annoyed by the whole thing.

He shrugged again. "I don't know. I don't know what I want people to think." Sometimes it was easier to lie.

"She probably means well." Candy smiled and moved her hair out of her face, braiding it a little and starting in on her hamburger. She chewed thoughtfully, swallowing and wiping her mouth with a napkin. "Well, what do you want?"

"She does, she does. And if I ask her to stop, she does." Which was more than Sam would do, sometimes. He was stubborn when he wanted to be. He shrugged when she asked about what he wanted. "I don't.. I don't really know. I wish.." He frowned. He couldn't even figure out how to phrase things outloud, or if he even had the guts to tell someone his own age, let alone his father and mother-figure. "I'm a coward," he concluded.

"Well, that's good." She was suddenly cognizant of the fact that by having parents who mostly didn't worry about her ever, she'd avoided having a lot of awkward conversations with her parents. His conclusion puzzled her, and she shook her head. "You're not. You're still figuring things out, and honestly? Parents make that hard."

He didn't really seem convinced. "I used to tell my dad.. well. Not everything. But we talked. Now I'm afraid to say... well, anything. What if it makes things worse? What if he pushes me away, or starts drinking again? And Sophie feels like she's stuck in the middle, I think."

Candy nodded. "That sucks." It wasn't very helpful, but she didn't know what she could say that would be. "If you want to talk to me, you can. I'm not a parent, but at least you don't have to worry about me pushing you away."

"I don't?" he asked, only half-joking. He didn't have very many friends here, and he didn't want to lose the closest one he had.

"I.. well, I'm." He was better at lying than he was telling the truth, it seemed. He probably sounded like he was trying to confess his love for her or something. His cheeks felt hot as he tried to get the words out. "You remember that week you put yourself in a coma? I was.... I sort of... I like guys," he finished lamely.

"Really," she grinned. "Nothing to worry about." She waited for his secret, smiling and doing her best to look kind. When he said he liked guys, Candy looked taken aback if only because to her, that wasn't a big deal at all.

"Me too," she teased. "And um. It's not a big deal to me. It might be for your dad, but I mean, I've slept with my roommate, and sort of have a crush on her. I'm never going to judge."

Sam looked relieved, and even laughed a little at her joke. "Thanks," he said, still having a hard time believing she was so okay with it. "That was.. easier than I thought it would be," he said.

"I want to tell Dad, but.. he's got his own stuff going on right now, you know?" It was really just an excuse because Sam was a little bit chickenshit.

"You're welcome. And I'm sure it will be with most people - a lot of people don't really care anymore." Candy shrugged and smiled. "Do you know how your dad would find it? Does he know anybody who's gay?"

Sam didn't really think he planned on telling 'most people'. He wasn't plotting a mass coming out party or anything. He was still trying to figure all of this out himself.

"I.. don't know. I can't think of anybody. I don't know. He wanted to become a priest for a while. He was in school for it. I don't know. I mean. He's not a priest now, and doesn't even really go to church anymore. I just really don't know. We've never talked about it."

Nodding, looking down at her hands, she pursed her lips in thought. "Hmm." If he'd been in line for the priesthood, then maybe he wouldn't be quite as lenient as she'd thought. "I don't know about your dad specifically when it comes to this, but you said he's trying, so I think that means he loves you. Maybe feel it out? Mention a gay celebrity or something for a reaction? I don't know, I'm really not that good with dads."

Sam nodded. "Yeah.. yeah, that might be a good idea." He really needed to get his head in the right place before he even attempted that, though. Normally Sam was pretty smooth, and a fairly accomplished liar. Now, though, he was a basketcase. Would he be like this until he got it off his chest?

Reaching out with one hand, she squeezed Sam's. "It'll be okay. If worst comes to worst, you can come hide at my place for a while. It's just me and my roommate." She shrugged and smiled. "But that's a last resort."

Sam smiled weakly and squeezed her hand back. "Thanks." He had places to go. He was fairly sure that Sophie would take him in if his Dad kicked him out. He didn't think she'd care who he liked, really. "Thanks, Candy. I'm really glad I have you."

"I'm glad I have you too." Candy shrugged and smiled a little, eating her burger before she could say anything else, anything stupid like how most of the friends she'd had recently had died in the Great War, or disappeared in the Vortex again. This wasn't about her, this was about him.

Sam smiled some, taking a little sip of his somewhat-melted shake. He was feeling better, but he still didn't feel hungry. It wasn't that he was as nervous as he'd been. He just felt off.

"You haven't?" Sam was surprised by that. Candy was nice, and pretty, and popular, and she seemed to be really good with people. He thought so, at least. Maybe it was more about her world. She'd mentioned something about a princess. Maybe she'd been confined to a castle or something.

"Yeah, summer's good." He was lucky to show up on the tail end of the school year. Of course, that meant he had to take his finals with fairly little preparation, but the teachers at Taunton were used to kids coming into classes late, so they had balancing mechanisms for that. "I should probably try to find a job, or something. Sitting around all day has been driving me a little bit crazy."

"Not really, no. I was the weird kid where I'm from in Minnesota." She shrugged. "My dad was the laid off alcoholic and my mom was a hotel maid." Tucking her hair behind her ears again, she went a little more quiet, worrying about her mother.

Nodding a little at his idea of a job, she smiled. "Yeah, me too."
