Entry tags:l, sadako yamamura

Who: Sadako and L
What: Sweets and Meetings
Where: Somewhere in Tokyo
When: Now
Warnings: Should be none

L had, in fact, been in the world for a whole week. He'd spent that week barely sleeping, and learning as much about it as possible. There was no Kira loose and killing people, and in fact, there was no Light Yagami. The world, with the small details, hadn't changed much, and for him, it was rather the same as before. He had his own home in a small apartment complex just outside of one of the districts of Tokyo. He'd replaced a detective that was low key, and apparently, that paid for plenty of what he needed. He'd spent a few of those days on-and-off investigating the board that had been on the browser when he wound up here in this world. So, as it stood, he knew plenty about the world around him.

What he didn't know, was what intrigued him the most, and well, he didn't really know Sadako. He'd read the Ring books back home, and he always admired her, in the way a criminal investigator admires a criminal. And she had as big a sweet tooth as he did, so where he waited for her, and indeed, where he was sitting now, was a sweets shop, in the heart of the city. He had taken a crouching seat near the center of the shop, and from his perch, he proceeded to dump a dozen packets of sugar into his tea while he waited for his plates of desserts to come to his table. He preoccupied his mind with things other than meeting Sadako, in the hopes that it would confuse her, and make her wonder which one it was.

Currently, he was thinking about the way he was going to redecorate his home. It was far too... perky for his tastes. Cheerful lilac walls and happy egg's yolk yellow curtains didn't suit him at all, nor did the positively fruity collection of clothes he found in his wardrobe. He seemed to have replaced a female detective. Or at the very least, one who liked to dress as a female. But it was all about the furniture for him. Plush, floral seats were not up to speed. He needed something far more masculine, something that felt comfortable. Something that said "I was raised in London, but I'm still Japanese." He was thinking of going Swedish with the whole deal.

Sadako, for her part, was intrigued by someone who knew the gravity of what she'd done in her homeland. She liked the idea of someone knowing just what she'd done, and exactly how far she'd taken it. She wanted someone to see how she'd changed, to know she wouldn't do it again.

Navigating to Tokyo was easy. She'd gotten dressed and brushed her hair, wearing a long white dress with white ballet flats. It felt good being out of the house for once. She hadn't brushed her hair in a while, not the way she did when she was going out in public. Her hair hung loose, down past her shoulders to the middle of her back, and was shiny in the lights of Tokyo.

Getting a bearing on L wasn't difficult; she'd had a taste of his thoughts earlier. She chuckled as he attempted to distract her with thoughts of his home. For her, it wasn't what the thoughts were, but merely the volume. She found him soon enough, sitting across from him and stealing a sip of his tea. Swedish furniture is all well and good, but I don't know. Sometimes the grandiose furniture makes me happy. Four poster beds and mahogany and such.

"So it is true," said L, in Japanese, as he systematically dumped packet after packet of sugar into the coffee, using nothing but his forefingers and thumbs in the process, "You really are Sadako. That's incredible." He was perched up on the chair with his toes hanging off and his feet bare, with his shoes set under the table. His eyes never left from looking at the table to look up at her.

"You're prettier than I imagined. But then again, even in the movies, you were portrayed as a ghost. Not very pretty." He finally stirred his tea, and then took a sip. "Mm. The dishes should arrive soon. I picked out lots of chocolate. I know you like it. There's even some fried ice cream."

Sitting back a little, a pleased smile on her face, Sadako actually blushed. She cocked her head at him, studying the one who'd complimented her so. "Do you not sit? You don't have to be uncomfortable. And thank you!" The idea of fried ice cream made her clap, and she leaned over the table slightly to tip his chin up with a thumb and forefinger.

"I won't hurt you," she grinned, also speaking Japanese. "Why would I?"

"I am sitting," his tone was low and quiet, completely relaxed. He looked up at her without worry or fear at all. His posture was natural for him, a hunched over perch that never quite left, even as he stood. "Of course you wouldn't, I know your story. I might be the only one in the world who knows absolutely everything about you, save for what's happened here, of course." He set aside his tea when the food arrived, getting a strange look from the hostess.

"That, and I trust you." He added, in his mind, I know you've killed here, but I've already told you I can't do anything about it, not without full proof, so I won't. I'd rather just start fresh. I made my own sacrifices, after all. We all have, in one way or another. But it's not fair to come in fighting, when I can start fresh.

After the hostess left, he started picking up pieces of candy and sweet rolls with his thumb and forefinger, depositing them onto his own plate. "Anyway, it'd be nice to see a girl like you change. If what you believe is true, and that you really are doing God's work, wouldn't you like to put it to good use for a change?"

"You're crouching," she teased. Beeping him lightly on the nose before dropping her hand, she leaned back to look at him, evaluating him even as he spoke. "I could tell you what's happened here. There's not too much to tell," she shrugged.

He trusted her already, which started her flush anew. She smiled as she picked up on the words he was speaking to her from his mind. Well, perhaps I'll try starting fresh as well, then. If you try, it's only fair I try as well. When it comes to you, at least. Which means I won't eavesdrop anymore without your express permission. She bowed her head slightly to the waitress as she left, beaming at the ice cream. Scooping some into her mouth, she cooed contentedly, leaning back and closing her eyes. "A girl like me. What am I like, L? And I have changed, somewhat. I'm a healer for a number of families I've come to love. That counts for something."

L simply shook his head when she said he was crouching. He was comfortable, and that was the end of that. He took a bonbon, inspected it closely, and popped it into his mouth. As she asked the question, however, he tilted his head and finished chewing. "You're arrogant, vain, egotistical. You know full well you've got the power to get what you want, by wits, by looks, or by force. Someone like you could do more than just heal. You could protect people who suffer. You could work within the law. You could take up cases aimed at women, for example. Wouldn't it be worse for a person to be punished by the law than by death or physical torture? You've obviously never dealt with the Tokyo Diet. They're not lenient." He tapped his temple with his forefinger before picking up a chocolate covered strawberry. "Use this, instead."

"I'm not smart, L." She shrugged. "Clever, perhaps, but I'm not bright. I made average marks in school. I am content where I am." Which wasn't the truth, but she was hoping that he'd miss that part. "And if I had the power to get what I want, then why isn't - " Her voice had started to turn cold and angry, and she stopped herself. She wasn't mad at this boy, she barely knew him. Nor was she mad at Teja, not anymore. She was mad at circumstances that had led her there.

Nibbling on a bun, she shook her head sadly.

"You're clever enough. More clever than the incompetents that generally take up detective jobs." He pointed out, and then shook his head.

"Seems to me, you're not very content at all. I can't tell you why you couldn't have what you wanted in the regards of love, Sadako, but maybe it was karma. Or maybe fate. Whatever the cause, it can't be undone, and you have to press on." He drizzled some honey over the sweet bun, until it was practically drenched, before he picked it up and ate it.

"You haven't let death stop you in other ways, why let it in that one?"

"I'm glad I'm smarter than the stupid masses. Such a complimentary boy," she teased, rolling her eyes. Biting her lip, Sadako hated that she'd been transparent enough for him to read her, that he'd picked up on her feelings at all. Still picking at her ice cream, she shook her head. "I don't know. Loyalty. Perhaps I feel I owe it to him. He'll never laugh again, why should I? He'll never love again - if he even did love me - so why should I?"

Loving a demon had been complicated for her; she'd loved him as much as she'd been loyal to him and his cause. "Do you know anything about demons, L?"

"Literal or figurative?" L seemed only slightly intrigued, though it didn't show through his body language or expression, only in his tone. "I've met a shinigami before. That's close, I suppose." He sipped his tea, looking at her from his crouch on the chair.

"Consider, before you answer, what you've said. You've killed an entire world, and some of this one already. They haven't laughed or loved since their deaths, yet you seemed perfectly capable of loving and laughing despite this. Why should the death of someone you care about be more important than the death of the ones you've killed? I don't belittle your pain, but I see it all as equal pain for everyone. It's merely an observation."

"Literal," she smiled. "Close, perhaps, but not the same." His crouch was slowly growing on her, and she watched him. It was like he was a particularly observant, somewhat handsome bird.

Sighing, she nibbled at a bonbon herself. "That is also part of the human condition, L. Every human puts their pain before everyone else's." Blinking big doe eyes, she smiled as a woman across the room doubled over from a migraine. "Is she thinking of the hundreds of millions of people who have hurt like that before? Is she thinking of the people she's hurt? Everyone's hurt someone, L. She told a boy that she didn't like him in sixth grade. The one sitting across from her. He's never thought he was handsome ever since, and even though they pretend to be friends, he secretly wishes for her to fail."

Blinking again, the woman sat back up, breathing hard, migraine gone and replaced with the euphoria that many people called a runner's high. It was the least she could do in return. "At least I'm honest about things. I ache. So I act out. I'm not underhanded, I don't pretend to be kind after my cruelty." She licked chocolate off of her thumb, admittedly untidy while she ate sweets.

He watched her every move, listened to her every word, and didn't even flinch when she showed practical application of her own powers in public as if it was as easy as breathing. He knew what she was capable of doing, but he didn't want her to know that he was a bit upset by her picking on someone, even someone who supposedly deserved it.

"Still, you play with an unfair advantage, Sadako," He always followed up her name with the honorific 'san', since they were merely acquaintances, and finished off his plate of sweets, going for the half-melty fried ice cream next. "They can't grieve like you can, they can't hold their own like you can, and doing what you do is unfair and unjust. But even as they don't have your powers, most still manage to get past it, and have strength to carry on and find someone. You'll find someone again. Even if that someone isn't like you."

It was curious, how he never touched anything but with his first finger and thumb, but he seemed very capable of doing everything just like that.

"Perhaps I was given that unfair advantage because I'm incapable of dealing any other way." She smiled a little, watching him eat in his curiously tidy fashion. "I don't know how to grieve as everyone else does. If I did, perhaps I would." Testing a theory, she smudged some ice cream on her index finger, then touched it to his nose. "Nobody alive is like me anymore. Even Alexia wasn't, not truly. But he was close."

Crossing his eyes to see the smudge, he simply licked it off his nose and went about his business of eating the ice cream. "So you alienate yourself and focus on the differences. I can see how that would be hard to get over, but... You're still pretty and clever. You're still human, too. Surrounding yourself with power and alienating yourself from people won't give your happiness, but that's mainly pot and kettle, hm."

She couldn't help laughing delightedly when he licked his nose, kicking her feet a little. She skirted them away swiftly when they touched his, and shrugged at his observations.

"I don't think you're wrong about me, though I have never really thought myself pretty. I know other people find me as such, but I don't see it. Why do you alienate yourself? Tell me about the kettle."

"I'm an orphan, and was raised in London in an orphanage for gifted minds. I graduated top of my class and even when I was young, I was working cases for various government agencies around the world. I have solved every case I've taken. This alone made me not only a prime target for most killers who were afraid of being caught, but made me alienated by society. Most of my peers were... not ready to accept me, anyway. I moved back to Japan, where I was born when I got to the age of being in university, and slowly withdrew from society, only to rise again as L, among other aliases. I prefer to be called L, as I'm sure you've figured out."

He sipped the rest of his tea, before he poured another cup for himself, looking up at her. "That and most people can't stand to be around someone smarter than they are for very long. You may have powers to change physical things about people with your mind, but I've got the power of deduction and intelligence, and in that way, we're an even match."

"I'm sorry," she said, ducking her head. "My parents are dead, yes, but at least I had my mother for a few years." She swallowed and wiped her mouth daintily. Listening to his story, she smiled and shook her head. "You and I are alike. Only nobody killed you. That's good, I think."

Stretching out a little, she leaned closer to him, smirking. "I could always lobotomize you with a clot. Not that even. But I promised I won't, so I suppose." She pretended to be offended, tossing her hair.

"Oh, no, that's where you're wrong. I died. Like I told you on the board, I had a heart attack. You're able to see people's health, what's wrong with them on a physical level, and you yourself can see that with the exception of two cavities, I'm in perfect health." He looked straight at her and simply stared.

"Such an actress."

"I assumed the heart attack was naturally caused, my mistake. I don't like to poke through people's memories. It seems very unfair. And you did have two cavities, but you don't now." She shrugged a little, giggling when he stared at her.

Leaning over to ruffle his hair, she smiled. "I'll take that as a compliment, thank you! I'm a very good actress!"

Blinking when his hair got into his eyes, he nodded as he silently thanked her. "That saves on a trip to the dentist. I appreciate it." He checked his teeth with a run over them with his tongue and found that she was true to her word. "That is good. It comes naturally, I'm sure, leading the double life of someone who's lived three times as long as they look and act." He started the systematic process of filling the tea with sugar once more, emptying the sugar packet container on the table. Now that they had their sweets, he used a honey stick to stir it.

"You should be an idol." L got just the slightest smile at that. "Get an audition for a TV spot as a drama actress. You'd make a great detective in that way, too. I'd watch it."

"You're welcome. I'm kind to my friends, you'll see." She already considered him one, as surely as Sookie or Miniver was. "And I suppose that's true, though thirty of those years were spent being almost dead. A couple of weeks spent truly dead." She watched him add more sugar to his tea, chuckling.

His smile made her laugh, a rarity around most people, but something she did quite often around her friends. "Me? I couldn't be an idol. For one, I have obligations elsewhere, but I also don't think I'd do very well on television. Film was all right, but I prefer theater, to be honest. There's more purity to the emotion." She wanted to call him out on the fact he thought she was pretty, but she figured she'd let him have his secrets.

"Television is live, too, maybe a live cooking spot. Can you cook?" He shrugged. "It would do you well to be loved by as many people as you can possibly stand. It would do your ego no good, though. Inflate it even more." He sipped his tea and looked at her, his dark eyes staring nearly into her.

"Made you laugh."

"A bit! Nothing too special, but enough where I could pretend on television." She chuckled and sipped her tea. "My ego's fine, truly. I know I'm weak in spots, but I know I have strengths in others. I think most people are that way."

She blinked, meeting his stare and shrugged a shoulder. "Only because I made you smile first."

"I smile sometimes," L rebutted. "When it's worth smiling about. But now... you asked me earlier if I was daring you to fall in love again. Perhaps I should. But not with anyone. How about with your love of acting again? You don't need to sleep or eat, that takes roughly 30 percent of everyone's lives all on its own. You could use the time most people sleep and eat to work on your lines. Whatever it is you do now, healing your friends and family was it? Well, you can do that, too. Fill those empty spots in your life with something you love."

He tilted his head back as he finished the honey stick on its own, overturning it and squeezing it. "Be cute for everyone."

Blinking, Sadako sat back. She was grinning again, and shaking her head. "You're a genius!" Leaning forward, she planted a kiss to his cheek, giggling a little. "I don't have to audition too much, and portkeys would make traveling easy enough." She was already scheming in her head, smiling dreamily as she nibbled on more chocolate.
