Who: Sam Ford and Sophie Devereaux
Where: Her flat
When: Afternoon
What: Someone's breaking in, and it's not her.
Warnings: Naw.

Sophie had been working all sorts of hours at the theatre getting ready for the play. It was weighing on her mind, all the things she still needed to get done before the show was a bit of a distraction. At least, that would be her excuse for why she didn't pick up on the hard-to-notice yet telltale signs that someone else had entered her flat.

Dropping her tote on the floor near the door, She closed the door behind her and turned toward her living room, a single brow lifting as she saw Sam in her sofa, eating her ice cream.

"Well well. Good afternoon, darling."

Sam smirked, licking the spoon. "Fancy meeting you here," he said, his brow raising to mirror hers. He set down the bowl on a coaster and leaned back on the coach, looking quite proud of himself. He put his feet up on the ottoman, feet crossed at his ankles as he put his hands behind his head.

"So how was your day?" he asked, watching her to gauge her mood. She had implied he could let himself in, but he hadn't crossed this particular boundary before. He imagined a large factor would depend on her mood.

"My day was quite lovely... and yours?" She was mildly amused that he was here - not that he'd gotten in, but so quickly. She'd offered the challenge, and even changed the alarm to one he'd be able to guess if he got that far. "Of course, I was in the mood for ice cream..."

Reaching over, she tugged on a lock of hair, then took a seat on the sofa."

"Well, if you bought the bigger carton instead of the fancy tiny one, there might be some left." Sam hadn't. actually cleaned her out, but he couldn't resist teasing her.

He leaned forward, looking over at her. "My day? Awkward with a side of awkward."

Sophie grinned. "Are you implying I don't deserve the fancy stuff?"

When he talked about his day, her expression slid from teasing to concerned. "Doesn't sound particularly pleasant. What happened?"

"I'm just saying you should buy more of the fancy stuff." He passed the small carton and a clean spoon to her. He'd eaten out of a bowl (he wasn't quite to that point yet), but kept the carton with him, anticipating she would be home soon. It was soft, but not melty. His timing had been spot on.

He shrugged. "Eh, school," he said dismissively. It was obvious that he was leaving something unsaid. He just wasn't sure how much he could say without Sophie putting all the pieces together. Besides, he hadn't come for a therapy session--well, maybe he had, but it seemed a little early to jump right into that.

"Looks like I might have to. Thank you..." She chuckled as she took the carton and spoon from him, and enjoying the treat for a moment while she listened.

"School is awkward with a side of awkward... so you've decided to take up B&E?" Sure, she believed him. "Starting to sound like Parker, there."

"You could've given me a key," he pointed out. She'd practically invited him to break in. And not in the 'leaves-the-key-under-the-mat' sense, in the sense where she'd actually said 'Come pick the lock.'

He turned, stretching his legs out over the side of the couch and leaning his back against her side. "How's the play going? Are we going to get to see you make out with a girl?" Changing the subject, yes.

"I could have. Where's the fun in that?"

Draping her one arm lightly over him as he leaned against her, her elbow rested lightly on his shoulder as she continued to eat what was left of her ice cream. The change in topic didn't go unnoticed, but she'd roll with it for now.

"One doesn't "make-out" in Shakespeare, love. the play is going to be smashing... only a few more days until the curtains go up. Have your bevy of dates ready?"

"Aww," he said, leaning his head back and mock pouting. "What about a nudity scene? Maybe your toga could fall off." Yes, he knew better. He was playing dumb. For some reason, he was just a little off tonight. There was a little less mirth behind his jokes. He was trying to cover up any ease. He was trying really hard, and he'd probably fool just about anyone.

He might be able to fool just about anyone, but conning a conman was a slightly different sport. Still, she said nothing about his mood, simply offering him a spoon of ice cream.

"Sadly, not a single toga to be found. Next time I do Julius Caesar though, I'll see what I can manage for you. I do love Julius Caesar..."

He opened his mouth for the scoop of ice cream, giving an appreciative 'mmm'.

"Orgies in that one? I hear a lot about those Roman orgies." You'd think the silly emo-sex week was still going on with the way Sam was talking. Still, it was obvious he wasn't serious. There was playfulness in his tone, even if it wasn't entirely genuine. Actually seeing Sophie doing a nude and/or sex scene on stage would probably scar him for life. "Maybe Parker could try acting," he said with a wink.

"Parker might not be quite ready for the stage yet..." She thought for a moment, shuddering at the idea of having to explain the idea of prop weapons to the girl. "And while there are no orgies in the normal Julius Caesar, I assure you if you were? You would not be present in the audience." She laughed, leaning to press a kiss to his forehead. "That's a bit weird even for me. Gonna tell me what's bothering you?" The question was lighthearted, implying she'd not pry if he said no.

"Aww, you're no fun."

The moment she called him out, his smile faded and he looked thoughtful. He leaned back, wrapping a finger in Sophie's hair, playing with it. "How much time do you have?" he asked sarcastically. Where should he even start? Either way, he was more comfortable here than he was pretty much anywhere else.

"About... 14 hours, give or take a few?"

She leaned to the side just long enough to put the mostly empty carton of ice cream down on a magazine, then settled back a bit more comfortably on the sofa, the arm over his shoulder snugging lightly.

"Lay it on me, sugar."

"School's kinda.. I don't know. I don't fit in." He shrugged. Things had gotten more uncomfortable since the whole sex-thing.

"But home is worse," he admitted. "Stuff with Dad...I know it's supposed to get better with time, but Sophie.. It's not. I just. I don't know what to do. He doesn't--" He frowned.

"You don't fit in? You're bright, personable, charming, outgoing..." Sophie frowned, wondering how he could be having trouble. Absently, her fingers threaded through his hair while she thought. "Is it the magic thing?"

When he talked about Nate, she groaned inwardly, all-too-easily being able to picture how Nate was. "I can see how things with your father might be awkward. He doesn't what, love?"

He shrugged when she asked about school. It was weird going to school with wizards and mutants, but he didn't really feel discriminated against, or anything like that. The school had a surprising harmony between the superpowered kids and the regular kids. "Just the new kid, I guess. Jocks are.. Yknow. Jocks." Sam had a particularly complicated situation with one of the jocks, which had automatically gained him a football team worth of enemies.. But it wasn't like they were kicking the crap out of him, or anything.

Sam frowned, lips slightly pursed. It was hard for him to talk about--which was why he came to Sophie, really. If he could talk to anyone, it would be her. "He doesn't love me." He tried to make it sound matter-of-fact, without sounding too torn apart.

She was going to comment on the jocks at school, make some remark about getting Elliot to show him a few moves and such, but then he spoke about his dad, and it simply broke her heart. Sighing, she leaned her head down against his.

"He does, Sam. He does. I think he's just afraid, and confused, and we've taken away his crutch."

He shook his head. "He doesn't, Sophie. He loved me when I was eight, I know that. But now.. I'm a stranger to him. You like me more than he does, and you've just met me." His teeth clenched together a moment. "It's not that he doesn't know how to show it, I practically lay it out in front of him. 'Love you, Dad.' 'Yeah, whatever, bye,'" he lowered his voice for the impression of his dad. It wasn't fair, but there it was. "What am I supposed to do, move his mouth for him? I get that this whole thing is hard, and it's confusing, and I'm guessing suddenly living with a teenager is messed up, but-" He didn't really have a 'but'. He wasn't sure where he was going with that sentence. "It's fine," he said with a sigh.

"You are a stranger to him. I know you better, perhaps, because I didn't watch you die... I simply watched your father fall apart. I'm not sure you understand how much he changed because of that. He feels responsible for it, and the breakup of your parent's marriage afterwards. Remember love, it hasn't been as long for him since you got sick... And he's still grieving in a very real way. "

She sighed. She could easily kill the man right about now. "I'm not saying that acting the way he is is ok... But between the two of you, You're probably a bit more rational. Maybe I should talk to him."

"I know. I know all that. But Sophie, I'm right here. I'm living under his roof." Did Nathan want to lose Sam again? Because he was on the rught track. "I know he doesn't deal well, but.." Sam was sounding more and more upset, his muscles tensing. "If you think it'll help him deal, give him the goddamn booze."

That was out of line. "Sorry," he mumbled. "No. No, don't talk to him about this. Sophie, don't. I..I'm trying to give him space."

"How much space, doll? Enough so that he doesn't notice when you're gone? Bah... your father's an excruciatingly exasperating man." Leaning, she placed a light kiss on his brow. "And if I thought he wouldn't kill himself, I'd offer him a beer. Or a scotch. He needs to be working again, I think. We all do..."

Sighing, she smiled. "I don't like seeing you like this, doll. It's not fair to you."

He shrugged. "I don't know." He wondered if his dad realized he'd gone out. If he'd gotten arrested for breaking in--now that wouldve been an interesting phone call. "I love my dad," he said as she kissed his forehead. That was probably why it hurt so much--his father's rejection, not the kiss. "I don't know. Some days it feels like he's almost as much of a stranger to me as I am to him." He couldn't imagine the father he'd grown up with acting this way. He'd been depressed when Sam's mom left, but he'd never acted this way toward Sam.

"Don't talk to him about this.. Promise me, Sophie."

"I can't do that, Sam. He needs to know this is bothering you. And if he can't see it because he's so blinded by his own misery, then he needs to be hit on the head with it."

Her arm tightened around him - she didn't know what to do, but she did know her first instinct was to go shove at Nate until he did the right thing.

"I can refrain from telling him I've talked to you about this... for you. But I can't not talk to him at all, Sam. I can't sit and watch the Ford stubbornness destroy any future you might have together. Please don't ask me to do that."

"Sophie," he begged, sitting up, pulling out of Sophie's arms and turning to face her. "Now isn't a good time. Just.. Wait? I can live with it. Please don't do this." He didn't need Sophie to fight his battles for him. He needed her to be his confidant. He needed someone he knew he could trust. "Sophie," he said, pleading in his voice.

"And when is a good time, love? When is enough enough? He needs to get out of this wallowing... thing he does." She sighed, leaning back in her seat, taking a deep breath.

"I can only watch him kill so many things at once, Sam..."

He could tell her he was fine. He could tell her it wasn't killing him. He could tell her that whatever he was feeling, his dad must have it ten times worse. But he didn't know how convincing he could be with any of that. "Sophie, please. I trust you. I come to you when I can't tak to Dad. Please. You can do whatever you can to help him, or whatever just.. He can't know that this is bothering me." He been trying so hard to hide it.

"... Fine."

She was going to regret it... she could tell. She could already feel this decision biting her later, but it meant a lot to him... and it wasn't as if she didn't know any other way to handle things. "I shan't mention you, talking to you, or that it's bothering you. I will, however, feel free to keep asking him how things are going, and getting him to talk. And maybe... I don't know... knock it the hell off, useless though my attempts may be. Fair?"

"Thank you, Sophie," he said emphatically. He leaned in and hugged her, then rested his head on her shoulder. "Knocking sense into him is good. I want him to get better." Sam just didn't want to make him feel worse in the process.

"You might want to give me a key, though. One of your neighbors was giving me the evil eye."

"You're welcome doll." Sophie returned the hug, dropping another light kiss onto the top of his brow. "I want him to get better too. I'm working on it."

"And what better way to encourage than offer a harder challenge?" She grinned, pointing toward the entry table. "Left drawer, in the glass dish... the blue key. Does this mean I need to start using sock-on-knob technology if I've a date?"

"A challenge is fine, but you're the one explaining to Dad why I got arrested." He stood up, following her directions to the key. He slipped it into his pocket. "I just won't come over if Dad's over," he said, blatantly ignoring the possibility of her having a date with anyone except his father. As far as Sam was concerned, Sophie and Nate were 'meant to be.'

"Pfft, school." He shoved his hands in his pocket, starting toward the door. "Pretty soon I'll be done with finals and you won't be able to use that as an excuse." He wouldn't either, unfortunately. Homework was an easy excuse to get out of awkward conversations or rehearsal with Sophie. Before leaving, he walked back to Sophie and hugged her without waiting for her to stand up, arms wrapping around the shoulders as he kissed the top of her head.

"I'll see you later, Sophie."
