Who: Garfield "The Wonder Dog" Logan and Sophie Frost
Where: Chez Frost
When: Last week or so.
Warnings: None.

There were dozens of choices that went into becoming a dog. Fur length. Claw length. Breed. Markings. Age. Gar very rarely consciously made any of them, and as a result, his dogs tended to look like him: perky, kind of goofy, and strangely-shaped. However, there were other times when he could pick a few traits to focus on, and right now, there was a floppy-eared puppy barreling down the hallway to Sophie's room.

He lost his footing where the floor went from carpet to hardwood, resulting in him sliding into her door rather than padding up to it. He let out a little yelp. Fortunately, her door wasn't shut all the way, so he tumbled into the bedroom, tail over muzzle.

"I'm all right! I'm perfectly all right, don't panic. No panicking. Now. Who was it that ordered the LARGE HAM?"

After the fight with Darius, Sophie had gone back to spending most of her time in her room. She'd talked to Rose a little bit earlier and told her about the things that had been said. She felt sort of bad about the whole thing, now that her anger had mostly faded.

When she heard the yelp, she looked up from where she sat on the bed. Had she not been in diamond form, she probably would have let out a little eep herself. As it was, she appeared rather composed. There was no panicking. "Hi, Gar," she said, a small smile crossing her face as she saw the little puppy. She pat the bed next to her.

If there was a disadvantage to being a puppy rather than any other animal, it was that puppies were basically small, dumb, happy humans. They'd evolved to be companions, and had succeeded as pets mostly because they were basically already on the same wavelength as people were. However, this meant that there was a very human part of his canine brain that told him he could do things that he really couldn't. One of these things was "jump onto the bed."

Gar ran across the floor and leapt. His front paws made it; his hind paws did not. This left him scrambling to get up, or at least scrambling not to fall on his canine hindquarters. He eventually managed to climb up, his dignity in tatters. Fortunately, dogs didn't have much need for dignity anyway. "So, how are you? You seem blue." Ba dum bum.

When Gar started to scramble for purchase, Sophie instinctively went to help. Her brain didn't see him as a human friend with dignity, but rather as a tiny puppy that was going to fall. She picked him up and plopped him down in the middle of the bed, far away from the edges.

The brush with danger was absolutely adorable, and she couldn't help smile. "A little," she said, even as the diamond form faded and she started looking more fleshy. She had to be careful. As soon as she changed, she felt the dull aching in he chest. She would just have to focus on the positive. She scritched Gar between the ears.

It wasn't that strange to be treated like a puppy in puppy form anymore, but it had taken some getting used to. "Diamond you doesn't smell like much of anything. In case you're curious. I guess that's something useful to keep in mind, if you're the type of person who doesn't like to take a shower after PE."

There was a strange pleasure to being scratched behind the ears. It occupied that strange place in a dog's mind between human and canine. Intellectually, Gar knew that it was all breeding and so forth, but he still couldn't stop his leg from shaking.

Sophie laughed softly. "Good to know," she said. She pet his neck a little before going to play with his ears, flopping them up and down. She hadn't ever had an actual pet, so the last few weeks playing with Gar was new for her.

"Yesterday sucked," she said quietly, grabbing the tennis ball that had been left in her room and tossing it on the ground. She didn't know if Rose had told Gar anything about the fight or not.

"Rose was pretty... grumpy over something yesterday," Gar admitted. That was one way to put it. She'd said something very untoward about humans, then apologized when she realized Gar was there. The fact that Darius was technically a mutant, if only recently so, didn't seem to occur to her either.

"She didn't tell me why yesterday sucked, th--BALL!" Gar chased it, collided into the wall, then wrestled with it for a second before taking it back to Sophie, victorious. He dropped it on the floor and tried again. "She didn't say why yesterday sucked."

Sophie smiled watching him. He was adorable. She swung her legs over the bed, getting down onto the floor so it would be easier for Gar to bring it back. She tossed the ball again.

"I got in a fight with Darius.." she said, pursing her lips as she thought. "I asked him not to leave.." She bit down on her lower lip. "But he wouldn't stay. So I told him not to come back." She jutted out her chin a little in a defiant expression, but it wound up looking more like a pout. She'd been furious at the time, but now she was just sad.

"Well then, serves him right." Gar chased the ball as fast as his legs would carry him. It bounced off the dresser and across the room, then rolled under her bed. He got it in his mouth and continued crawling through, coming out next to Sophie. He hopped onto her lap and dropped the ball.

"I mean, you're my friend, so I'm required to be on your side. Hos before bros. But eff that guy. And all you're losing out of this deal is Darius, whereas he's losing you. Trust me, he has it worse than you do."

Sophie frowned. "Don't say that..." she said, not really sure what she did want him to say. She pet Gar's head absently. "All.. all I wanted was a normal family," she said to the talking dog. "I just wanted him to stay when I needed him. And.. and if he was having problems, I just wish he oculd've felt like he needed us. I don't know why he always had to leave."

She sniffled, getting close to tears again. "I just wanted us to be a family. But he just ran away. What kind of brother does that?" She didn't want to start crying again. She shook her head a little. "He.. he's not my brother.." she said, hesitantly at first, but she forced more confidence into her voice. "I don't have a brother. I have two sisters and.. and an awesome puppy." She scritched Gar's ears for emphasis.

"Some people don't... deal with things in a healthy way. They get hurt, they lose people, they suffer, and they know they should talk to people. They should tell them they're afraid or hurt or worried. But they don't. They hide, they run away, they tell jokes."

He nuzzled Sophie a bit. "I'm not saying you should forgive him or you shouldn't. It's up to you. But whatever you choose, you still get to keep the awesome puppy. NB: I also make a very handsome kitty and a serviceable bunny."

"Yeah, maybe. Maybe I'm not the healthiest either, but he was acting so angry with me because I wasn't chatting with him and acting like nothing happened." She frowned. There were still a couple things about their argument that really bothered Sophie, and she wasn't sure she would get over. "I don't know if he thought that.. since I'm talking to you and Rose maybe it's not fair that I couldn't talk to him, but.. It's different. You guys have been here for me." There was doubt in her voice, though. Maybe she wasn't being fair.

But Darius had been, undenyably, a douchebag. She hardened her resolute, stopping short of any sort of forgiveness. Maybe Darius' concern had been justifiable, but his methods had certainly not. She scritched gar's neck, nuzzling the top of his head. "Good. Do a kitty."

"Okay, stay here." Gar got up and padded out of the room. From the hallway there was the sound of him running away, then running back, stumbling on the floor again, and a bit of colorful (ha) swearing. He came back in with a bit of string held carefully in his mouth to keep it getting too soggy. He dropped it on the floor in front of Sophie.

"Okay." The doggy turned kitty pretty quickly, and he let out a little mew for effect.

At first she was confused to why he was running off. When he brought the string, she smiled and picked it up. She unraveled a bit of it, wrapping her fingers up in it. She bounced the string in front of him when he went kitty.

"Cute," she commented, smiling.

"Ain't I just?" When he was a cat, there was something about strings he liked. Tackling them, batting at them, trying to sneak up on them. He knew, intellectually, that it was Sophie doing all of the work, and the string wasn't much of a target, but still, it was fun. If she'd had a laser pointer, he would have lost his feline mind.

Gar was playing up the cute kitty angle a bit, and she could probably tell. But he liked being there for Sophie. She deserved better than she got, and if an adorable little fuzzball distracted her, then that was the least he could do. Besides. It was fun.

Sophie giggled and bounced the ball of yarn, holding one end of the string and letting the ball roll across the floor. "I'm glad you're here," she said, flicking the string back and forth. "Have you had to hide from Logan much?" She'd felt his presence around overnight a few times.

"He knows I'm here. I think." Rose had suggested as much, but he could never be sure if she was serious or if she just wanted him to get killed in some new and exciting way. "I don't think he minds too much. It's not like I'm going to be doing naughty things." He had his very own apartment for that, and assuming he could keep the scantily-clad alien model roommate from screwing things up, he was probably in the clear there.

Gar crouched low to the floor, his tail raised high. Part of it was showing off for Sophie, but the predatory instincts of the kitten had gotten into his head. He pounced on the string, a mighty feline warrior.

"Huh." That didn't sound like Logan. Usually Logan wasn't friends with logic when it came to Rose. Maybe he just didn't want to create more trouble in the already crazy family.

She giggled, yanking and flicking the yarn for Gar. "You have awesome powers."

"You're only saying that because I'm a kitty. There are times when my powers get really weird." His first idea was to turn into a small dinosaur or something, but ever since The Land Before Time (the first one; Gar didn't recognize any of the sequels) tiny dinosaurs had been excessively adorable. So instead he chose something that would still be bizarre.

Suddenly, sitting across from Sophie was a vibrantly green Sophie wearing Gar's clothes. What sent it into uncanny valley territory was the voice: it sounded like Sophie (and, by proxy, Emma) but had all of Gar's inflections. "They're still awesome powers, I grant you. If only because someone in this room is green and fabulous."

"Oh, that's weird," she said, smiling and tossing the yarn at her other self. "That's really weird. Go back to something cute." She stuck out her tongue at him.

She flopped onto her back, looking at him upside-down. "I can't play with you like that. I don't fetch things or chase string."

"I am cute." He stuck his tongue out right back at her. Or he stuck her tongue out. It was a confusing mess, borrowing bodies. "By which I mean, of course, you are cute. But if you insist." He went back to kitty and leapt onto her stomach, circling a bit before curling into a kitten ball. Conversation didn't change in the slightest as he did this.

"The real tragedy here is that I can't copy mutant powers. I guess it makes sense, since all mutants are different. But still. Being psychic for a few would be right neat. I'd be able to know when people are having naughty thoughts about me. I'm sure it happens to you all the time. Naughty thoughts about me, that is."
