Who: Dick and Carrie
What: Romantic vacation
Where: Hawaii
Warnings: Not many.

Dick drank beer, when he drank. On occasion he might go for a shot of whiskey, mostly because it was in the bar and to the best of his knowledge, he was the only one that ever drank any of it. The people who came in usually favored girlier, stickier drinks, the kind that Carrie wouldn't be caught dead drinking under general terms.

He was having one right now. Piña coladas were God's gift to rum. Once he got back to New York, the gays were probably going to tease the hell out of him, but he really didn't care. It was hard to care about much right now.

"So, remind me not to bitch next time you want a vacation," said Dick. Today he'd had more sex more times than he could count, rubbed lotion on his beautiful girlfriend's back (among other things), parasailed, swam, and ate enough pineapple that his system was slightly acidic.

The bar situated on the second floor of their hotel was a lot nicer than the other tourist traps they'd visited. There weren't any leis strewn about and Carrie had yet to see pictures of big waves and proud surfers. "Another gin and tonic, please," she smiled at the man behind the counter and hoped she wouldn't have to flash her fake ID. The man gave Dick a look and, assuming they were together and both of age, didn't ask her to show proof of how old she was. He figured that her money was as green as anyone else's and she didn't really seem the loud drunken type. Even if she was, he couldn't imagine a person of her frame doing much damage.

Carrie was smiling and thoroughly enjoying herself. There was no worry about work or patrol or anything else. After a bit of discussion in which Dick had put her worries at ease, Carrie had left her costume and gear at home. She'd never done something like this before. It was nice and terribly normal. Thoughts of crazy Bruce were brushed aside - Carrie would handle that later, when they were back to the real world. For now, it was all about fun and enjoying herself. "I will," she said turning to Dick. "We're doing this again. We're making a habit of this, in fact." It didn't really register in her mind how domestic that sounded.

After a moment inspecting his glass, she shook her head, almost disappointed. "Piña colada? Really?"

"This is a vacation. I can drink man drinks at home. Here, I don't have to taste the rum. They have this marvelous technology that buries the taste of rum in something not unlike one of those horrifyingly organic smoothies you're always trying to push on me. You should be happy. I'm drinking healthy now." Dick smirked and took a sip from his pineapple-shaped mug.

"So how is it," and Dick lowered his voice here, "that I had to flash my ID no less than three times since we've been here, and I've yet to see you do it once? In what world do you look older than I do?"

"Okay, one." She raised a finger for emphasis and spoke in a very serious voice. "Don't insult the organic smoothies, they are very good and good for you." Carrie was not quite sure how Dick had lived before she'd shown up, but she suspected he'd only ever eaten ramen and left over take out. That sort of lifestyle was appalling and wrong in her eyes. "And two, I may have to abandon you for an attractive Hawaiian man who can drink real drinks. I was downing pina coladas while I was, oh, twelve years old." That probably wasn't the sort of thing she should have bragged about out loud.

"You can get away with underage drinking when you're as cute as I am," she had to whisper this to him for fear of not being served any more. "Also, I figure they don't think a fine, upstanding young man such as yourself would date a girl who's only barely legal."

"You are borderline jailbait. If I saw me dating you, I'd probably kick my ass. And you know, if we were back in my universe, it'd be the kind of thing to make the Gotham tabloids. You know, more often than it already has. 'Billionaire's Heir Spotted With Barely Legal Cohort! Is a relationship blooming?'" The idea amused Dick greatly. It was basically the entire reason he stayed out of Gotham when he wasn't wearing the tight pants.

"So you were downing these when you were twelve? And when did Bruce start training you, thirteen? Did he make you touch your finger to your nose every other week?" He was teasing, a fact made evident by his wide grin.

"Oh thank God we don't have too much of that." She made a face. They got enough press as it was in this world. Carrie had spotted her face once on the biggest of Darke's fansites. The comments to that post had been both amusing and painful. Apparently, fangirls (and boys) hated it when their favorite part-time model spent time with a person of the opposite sex and could get pretty vicious.

"Mhm," she nodded sagely. "I led a wild life before I was taken in." Carrie didn't often speak of home. She missed it well enough but things were a lot better here. "I didn't get drunk when there was work to do." Which meant there'd been a decent chunk of her adolescence spent completely sober. Sad times. "He had a bat-breathalyzer made just for me." She was joking, of course. Bruce didn't need technology to help him spot a drunk. He had a sixth sense for that sort of thing, the bastard.

"Yeah, I'm pretty sure that you're about the most responsible one of us when it comes to The Mission." Dick wasn't drunk, but he was at the stage of inebriation that he liked to call Philosophically Buzzed. "That doesn't mean I won't torture you when you're hungover, though. Feel free to do the same to me, if it's ever an issue."

Dick kissed Carrie's cheek and signaled to the bartender that he would like another girly tropical drink. Once he brought it over, Dick raised his new pineapple mug. "To Darke Knight. Wherever he may be."

Carrie wasn't drunk yet. She'd say she was pleasantly buzzed. If she kept going, she'd get cuddly. And she hoped to stop herself before she got really wasted, but there weren't really any guarantees. They were on vacation, after all. "Am I?" She seemed a little surprised by this. In response to his threat-promise, she grumbled slightly. "You are a stick in the mud. And when I'm hungover-" there was no if, only when, "I will do my absolute best to ignore the shit out of you." She nodded to emphasize her point.

Carrie hadn't ever seen Dick drunk. She liked the idea of it, as Dick almost never let his guard down. Getting drunk, in her head, was something other people who were not responsible Nightwing types did. "To Darke," she grinned, toasting and then taking a moment to drink. "And to the young girls everywhere that mourn his retirement. Poor things."

"Oh, the poor young girls. We'll always have the internet. The internet doesn't have any naked Darke on it, does it? I'm relying on you for that, Little Wing."

Any response Carrie was going to give was interrupted by an old couple who looked like the template for all grandparents, everywhere. He had a video camera, and both of them had Hawaiian shirts that were so loud that somewhere in the world Superman was looking for earplugs.

"You two are so sweet," said the lady. "Are you on your honeymoon, by chance?"

She opened her mouth to reassure him that the only naked pictures of him to be found were safely hidden on her own personal computer and would remain there, no matter how much he begged or argued otherwise. One of her hands had casually slipped up one of his legs, but didn't get very far before they were interrupted by the older couple.

Carrie would have choked had she been drinking. Thankfully her mouth was empty so she just sputtered incoherently before shaking her head, no. But after that initial jolt, she took it much better than she could have. The liquor in her system loosened her up some. "No," she said in a rather friendly tone, laughing because marriage was a big no-no... even if they did behave like an old married couple, "We're really not." She looked at Dick, amused.

She punched him in the arm. A bit harder than she'd intended, but he could handle it. "Don't laugh," she said, slightly grumpy but not overly malicious. "You get a night off. After this, it's back to normal." She inhaled deeply, bringing a leg up and resting her face on her bent knee. "And you can't help it when you say the stupid things that freak me out. It's just one of those frustrating things you do." She had about as little control over her mouth some days as he did, though. So she couldn't really fault him.

"That's nice. That you believe in that. That it's important to you." A pause. "I'm not afraid of it. Or well. Okay. I am. Maybe. A little. It's just... it's a big deal. It's for life. Or it's supposed to be." She shrugged lightly. "And I never saw a happy couple when I was a kid. My folks were just together, it wasn't like they were super in love or happy. Not that it was unhappy. It just was. My friends were mostly kids of divorce and the ones that stayed together sucked. One of my friends had a dad who was totally cheating and it was just really crappy for all of them." She sighed. "People don't stay together forever. And if they do, they don't stay happy. They end up hating each other or miserable or something." Her gaze shifted over to the old couple in the corner. "I don't really think it's possible."

"People don't stay happy forever," Dick agreed. "They don't stay happy forever. Like Barry said. They work at it. They try to make each other happy, and when those ways don't work, they find new ways. And there are some people who stay together because, well, the happy and the not-happy average out close enough to even that it's more of a hassle not to be together. But then there are others who fall in love, who find just the right person and they grow in just the right ways and they both care enough to work to have as good a relationship as they can possibly have."

Dick took Carrie's hand in his and took a deep breath. "If you really, sincerely believe that if you stay with me, then one day you will end up hating me or being miserable, tell me now. Break up with me. I'd rather be a friend with a broken heart than a lover with two."

She watched him as he spoke. He really believed what he said. Carrie didn't get him. "I don't..." she laced their fingers together, "I didn't mean it like that." There was a heavy pause. "I," she laughed in spite of the situation. "I don't know what I meant. I just." She looked down. "I don't want to break up with you." She looked up. "I don't. Really."

She shifted in her seat and really looked at him, as though she were trying to understand. "How do you believe that?" She struggled with her words a little because he tongue refused to work with her. Stupid tongue. "I mean. I want to..." She looked away. "I want to spend the rest of my life with you but I figure you'll..." get tired. "I don't know." She shook her head. This is why she didn't have this conversation. It was stupid. "And marriage... why get married when you can just be together? It's less complicated that way. I don't..." she ran a hand through her hair, frustrated, "I don't get it."

Dick had never really thought about why he was so convinced that marriage was what he wanted. "I don't want to break up with you either, Carrie. I was mostly bluffing. I believe in marriage because... well, I like the complication. Because it is a risk. I want to be with you forever. I say that now. I mean it. But it's still just something I'm saying. If I go out there, and I say to you and to the world, 'No matter what happens, I am going to be with this woman and love her,' I'm taking a chance. I'm taking a risk that you might break my heart into a million pieces, and I can look into your eyes every morning for the rest of our lives and think, wow, that was worth it."

He swallowed and took a deep breath. "And if you don't want to take that risk right now, that's okay. I'm not asking you to. I love you. That's all that matters."

"God." She was silent for quite a long time, eyes large and focused on Dick. "You... really love me." She spoke as though she hadn't known this before. Which was silly. Carrie knew he loved her. But maybe she hadn't gotten how much until right then. Or maybe the alcohol did funny things to her. Either way.

From their corner, the old couple watched them as covertly as possible. It was as though they could tell something big was going on. Or they were just horribly nosy.

"You'd marry me now? Why?" Her face split into a grin, she started to laugh a little and covered her mouth with a hand to try and keep it in. She had quiet giggles when she moved her hand away. "You're crazy." There was a half second's pause, "I love you so much." She didn't realize she had tears in her eyes until she blinked them away and one slid down her cheek. Carrie wiped it away furiously.

"Yeah, maybe a little." It wasn't the alcohol talking. It was the alcohol handing out the script, but it was Dick that had written it. "But you've seen me at my worst. And you've seen me through my worst. Because we held each other when Bruce was sick. Because when the world was ending, you... well, you basically cared more about me than I cared about myself. When London was under attack and you had every reason to crumble, you didn't. You're one of the strongest people I know. I... I'm babbling. Ha. I can make a list about the things to love about you, y'know."

He brought her hand to his mouth and kissed her. "And mostly... mostly because I do love you."

By the time he was finished, she was glowing. "God, you're a girl." She got up very quickly and broke the distance between them, arms going around his neck. The kiss was a little sloppy, but still good. She was so used to him that she didn't need to be completely sober to get a kiss right.

He tasted like coconut and pineapple and this made her smile onto his lips. They didn't break apart. Carrie pulled away enough so that her mouth would be free. She was in his lap, holding onto him like he was holding onto her. Resting her forehead against his, she stared into his eyes. "I love you."

Marriage. It meant something to him. It was important to him. She loved him more than anything. And the more she thought on it, the more she realized that she'd been thinking about this for a long while. All the talk about hating marriage was a way to push it into the back of her head. She wanted to be with him. She was also terrified of things getting fucked up. But they could work it out. They could. They were good together. They loved each other enough. "Marry me."

"Marry... who?" said Dick stupidly. He was drunk, yes, but it was more or less the same response he would have given if he'd have been sober. "Marry you? Marry you? Marry--Carrie Kelley, marry? Are you...?" He looked into her eyes, and wasn't entirely sure what he was going to ask her. Was she joking? Was she high? Was she insane?

She was completely serious.

"All right. I'll marry you."

She felt her stomach drop to somewhere around her ankles. For a moment, Carrie panicked. She let herself feel the fear and the nerves and all of the negative things that lurked in the back of her head. What if this was a huge mistake? What if this messed everything up? She let it eat away at her for a long minute and then she turned around and saw their entourage. In the small group that had followed were Barry and Iris.

Carrie turned to Dick, who seemed to be holding his breath while waiting for her to respond. She was silent, mulling things over. Taking a very deep breath, she asked herself Big Questions. Did she really want to spend the rest of her life with Dick Grayson? Yes. Could she really see herself living her life without him by her side? No. Was she ready for this?

"Yeah." Carrie nodded her head. There were cheers from the group behind them, but they went mostly ignored. She felt shaky and her voice sounded a little smaller than normal. But there was resolve in her eyes. "Yeah. Ready."

"Good." Dick, Carrie, and their entourage walked into the small chapel. It wasn't quite what he expected. There was a woman in the reception area; for some reason, he expected more. "Hi. We're here to elope."

"Okay, great. Fill out this paperwork, and you can go in after this next couple is done."

Dick stared. "...Seriously?"

"Yep!"

Dick turned to Carrie. "This was disappointingly easy. I had this thing in mind where I got them to bend the rules about blood tests and all that so that we could just... wow."

Carrie had expected the opposite. Not having given marriage much serious thought, she'd come in figuring you just talked to a priest and got it done. Apparently not. "You've been a superhero too long," she responded. "Not everything is fight to the death."

She looked over the form as Dick filled it out. Iris came closer with Barry tagging along. They looked very curious. "Did you say superhero?"

"Oh. Yeah." Carrie grinned. Normally it was an unspoken rule that even though their identities weren't exactly secret, they didn't talk about superheroing to civilians. That was how Carrie operated, at least. Carrie liked the old couple enough. "Both of us," she lowered her voice a bit, "It's a secret, though. So shhh." She brought a finger to her lips.

Carrie leaned into Dick and spoke into his ear. "I don't normally go around telling people we fight crime, but I kinda want them to have stories to bring back home to their grandkids." A pause. "If they have grandkids." She turned to the couple, "Just curious, do you guys have grandkids?"

They glowed a little with pride, "Seven."

"Wow. That's... a baseball team?" Carrie thought for a moment. "Football?" She shrugged. "It's a lot of kids, is what I mean."

"Smooth." Dick didn't look up from the paperwork. "And there are five people on a basketball team, that might be what you were going for." When he'd tried to get married to Kory, there had been all kinds of issues in their way. Now, it was as simple as paperwork and a credit card number. It would be depressing if he were sober. As it was, he just considered himself lucky.

"All right. You just need to sign the dotted line, Carolyn Kelley." She never, ever used her full name. Dick hadn't even been sure she had one until she started getting mail from the bank.

"It's pronounced Caro-line, Richard." She said it as though there was something unbelievably sour in her mouth. Carrie never went by her full name. It was an ugly name. Caroline Keene Kelley. Her parents had most certainly been smoking something when they'd come up with it. "Drunkard," she grumbled with a light smile on her face.

She signed the paper and handed it back. That was simple. "So all that's left is... actually doing it, right?" She watched a pair of double doors. Someone was going to come out and call them or usher them in or something. Carrie exhaled to keep herself steady.

"Isn't that what I said?" Caroline. Carolyn. Caroline. Hmm. "It won't be long now." Dick was still nervous, but pleasantly so. He'd already decided that if the world suddenly needed them, then it could fucking wait until he was done getting married. Apocalypse or demons or zombies could get in line just like everyone else.

The receptionist looked up. "Richard and Caro--"

He was quick to correct. "Dick and Carrie."

"Dick and Carrie, then. Are you ready?"

Dick looked at Carrie for a long time. Then he said, "Yeah, we're ready."

"Through the doors, then."

"Oh God," Carrie almost whimpered. "Okay." Deep breath in and out. "Okay. I can do this. We're doing this." Her voice was low enough that most people wouldn't hear. There was a knot in her stomach. It was like the calm before a big fight. Nerves were high and she was scared, but she was also excited. Squeezing Dick's hand hard, she reminded herself that she wanted to do this. She did.

The distance from the waiting area to the inside of the chapel was small enough, but seemed to stretch before Carrie's eyes. It only took them a minute before they were standing before a man of the cloth.

Carrie kept her eyes on Dick. As long as she did that, it wasn't quite so scary. As long as she was looking at him, everything was okay. "I love you," she whispered before the preacher started his thing.

"We are gathered here to join Richard John Grayson and Caroline Keene Kelley in the bonds of holy matrimony. If there is anyone here who knows why this couple should not be wed, let them speak now or forever hold their peace."

A lot of the people who had followed them were waiting outside. Dick half expected someone to tell him to take his shirt off again. But no one said anything. Evidently no one knew any reason they shouldn't be married. Dick certainly didn't.

"Richard, repeat after me."

Dick didn't need to repeat. He knew how vows went. Looking into Carrie's eyes, he said, "I, Dick, take thee Carrie, to be my lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, for better or for worse, in sickness and in health, for richer or poorer, 'til death do us part."
