Who: Sam Ford and Sophie Devereaux
What: Sophie getting to know Sam, sam catching up with Sophie. There will b crepes involved.
Where: Some swanky brunch place.
When: Brunch time
Warnings: Only if you don't like pastries.

The idea of Sam being here was still quite bizarre to Sophie, though she was sure it was a lot weirder to both him and Nathan. She'd not really spoken to the boy's father since he arrived, wanting to give them a bit of time to sort things out, but certain things he'd said led her to think that talking to Sam could only be beneficial, to everyone involved.

She'd gotten to the restaurant early out of habit, scoping it out with a quick glance, old habits dying hard. With a mimosa in hand she skimmed over the complimentary newspaper while she waited, trying not to think about how completely weird this meal might be.

Sam was acclimating as well as could be expected. It was weird not seeing Sophie everyday, so he actually expected this meal to be pretty normal. Back in his 'homeworld', or whatever you called it, he had a good relationship with Sophie. There was none of the awkwardness that sometimes comes between a boy and his father's new girlfriend. He'd known Sophie for years now, and she served as a mother-figure for him. He went to her often for advice.

He walked into the restaurant, looking around for Sophie. She would probably spot him before he spotted her. That was just one of Sophie's things. Then he saw her and started toward her table. "Hi, Sophie."

As soon as she saw him enter she'd put the paper down, folding it and dropping it to the side of the table. At least, she was assuming the teenager who'd entered alone was Sam, an assumption verified when he came toward her. She'd really only seen pictures of him, and it was... awe-inspiring in a way to see the boy that might have been. Or, in this case, was.

"Good morning, Sam. How are you?"

He smiled, sitting down across from her. "Good. School's not awful." He and his dad had been contacted by people at Taunton and worked it out that he can attend. With the portkeys, it was a shorter trip than going to the local school anyway.

"How are you?" He ordered a glass of orange juice from the waiter. "It's really good to see you."

"It should always be really good to see me." She flashed a grin at him, keeping it light - she wasn't sure what sort of relationship with her he was used to. He was cute, more young man than boy at this point, and she could see the resemblance to his father, slight though it might be. "You look good... I like the blond. Hungry?"

Sam laughed. "It is." He enjoyed Sophie's company a lot, and he thought she was good for his dad. He probably shouldn't try to play matchmaker.

Everybody kept mentioning how good he looked. His dad said it too. It was weird. Maybe they expected worse after the tornado. "Thanks. Yeah, I could eat."

With a beckoning finger she summoned a server, placing her order for breakfast and letting him do the same. Once the waiter was gone she leaned back a bit in her seat, mulling over the bits and pieces she'd picked up on since he had arrived.

"Other than school not being awful, You settling in ok? How are you after that bit of craziness last week?"

He ordered and turned back to Sophie with a shrug. "Yeah, it's all right. I'm trying to just go with the flow, you know?" He'd definitely noticed his dad acting weird, but he wasn't pushing the situation, or anything. He was trying to be laid back and wait for his dad to tell him whatever it was whenever he was ready.

"It's an okay enough place. I've met some nice people. And I guess things are pretty much back to normal after last week." He didn't have to worry about people crashing into him because they hadn't quite mastered flying yet. The world was kind of a dangerous place when everyone in it had superpowers that they didn't know how to control.

"That's probably best... If you think too much on it, it tends to give a person a headache. Everyone seems to fall into their normal patterns soon enough." She'd made the decision before inviting him out to not speak about Nate, so far as she could. If he wished to broach that subject, she'd go with it, but it didn't seem right to bring it up. Hell knew if she knew what was going in with Nathan and herself.

Leaning forward, Sophie rested her elbows lightly on the table, her chin resting in an upraised palm. The next part was tricky, as she really didn't know what she was asking about. His reactions might be key.

"And the pain?"

"What?" He blinked, his eyes widening briefly. There was a moment of panic that rose in his chest. He'd been trying to hide that from them. How did she know?

"I.. I don't know what you're talking about," he said, his brows furrowed in worry.

And... Bingo. She was sure Sam was a bright kid, but he had a lot to learn if he wanted to con a thief. Tilting her head forward slightly she arched a brow, offering a mild look.

"Really."

He was found out. He frowned, looking down at the table. "Sophie.." The waiter arrived with food at an inopportune, of course, to serve their food. It at least gave Sam something to look at besides the table.

Once the waiter was gone, he continued. "Dad doesn't know." Sam really did a good job of hiding it, most of the time. He'd just slipped up, somehow. "You can't tell him." His dad was.. Different. And Sam felt the need to protect him, for some reason. He didn't need to know about this.

"Do I have a habit of telling him things before he needs to know them?"

Sophie took the time to drape her napkin over her lap, adjusting her silverware a bit as she took up her fork, using it to cut into a bit of her crepe. Looking back at him, she offered a smile, easily hiding her worry. Who know what it was that was troubling him.

"What is it, precisely, I'm not telling him, hon?"

"It's just something I've learned to deal with," he said uneasily. "The break was nice... Unbelievable, really." He rubbed the back of his head nervously, not really feeling much like eating now. "The pain isn't as bad as it used to be," he said, his tone sounding almost like he was trying to comfort Sophie. "It's better than it was before I got here. I guess that crazy week.. Maybe it partly healed me, or something, I don't know." He poked at his food with his fork. "It's like you said. Better not to think about it."

He didn't really understand why his dad didn't know about the pain, but he didn't. And Sam didn't intend to tell him.

"Sam."

Sophie put her fork down and reached for his hand, waiting until he looked at her. "What is it that's hurting? I should probably know this, but some things are a bit fuzzy. Are you sick?" If Sam was sick again, in the world... she didn't even want to imagine what that would do to his father. "You can trust me."

He looked up at her. "You don't have to act like you know, Sophie." His tone wasn't harsh, just tired. He knew she didn't know him, though he wasn't sure why she was pretending to. Between her weird replies to his first post and just..everything. He just knew.

"When I was ten, I got pretty sick. I was in the hospital for a while. I got better, but I've had pain since then."

"I know you were sick, love. I remember it." And she did... it was around the time she'd retired the first time from theft. It had lost a bit of its thrill when Nathan was no longer trying to catch her. "I didn't realize you still had pain from it. And I don't know if the version of me you are familiar of knew that or not."

"It's part of the weirdness, Sam. When you first came, you'd seen your father that morning, right? Whereas he'd been here for months. So it's hard to assume that what I knew is still what's what. If I seem hesitant, that's why."

He didn't want to argue with Sophie, so he didn't point out that she hadn't recognized him when he showed up. Maybe part of him didn't want to know the answers.

"It isn't as bad now," he said, hoping that was what mattered. "Just.. I don't want Dad to know."

"OK." She nodded, squeezing his hand lightly. "If you swear to me it's not that bad, we can keep it from Nathan. But you have to promise me that if it gets worse, or it might mean you getting sick again, you'll tell him. If he's got to live through that again, well... he'll need all the warning he can get. And if you need anything... you'll tell me, yes? If it's something you don't want your father to know. He's got a lot going on right now."

"I swear it's not that bad. And I promise I'll tell him if it gets worse. I'm still checking in with the doctor." He drank some orange juice and tore a little bit of muffin off to nibble.

"And I'll come to you," he said with a small smile. "I always do." He squeezed her hand.

"Good." Satisfied, she smiled, taking a few bites of her crepe. They weren't quite as good as the ones in France, but close enough. She really didn't want to talk too much about Nate, but it was hard to resist the urge. "so that's that, and school isn't any more awful than normal. Home ok?" It wasn't really asking...

"Yeah," Sam said, relaxed ehough now to actually eat. He took a bite of his fruit. "It's a little different.. Dad's having a hard time adjusting, I think." It was hard to tell exactly what was going through his dad's mind. Something was off. "Going through a lot of stuff, you said." Sam, for his part, didn't try to pump Sophie for information. He wasn't an obnoxious teenager. "It's good, though. Can't complain. Well, you're not there, so I can always complain about that." Okay, maybe a little bit of an obnoxious teenager, but there was a smile on his face. He liked having Sophie around. He'd gotten used to it.

"I'm sure he is. But he'll work it out. I know he's thrilled to see you. As for me, well..." She just smiled lightly. "I might not be there now, but don't think you've gotten rid of me." It was so strange to her to think Sam thought she and Nate had been dating for years. Hell, they couldn't even manage to talk to each other about most things.

"Anything else new and exciting? New romantic interest at school yet?" She sipped on her mimosa, hiding her innocent look.

He smiled. "Good." That made him less worried that they'd had a fight or broken up. They just weren't there yet. Things worked on a different time frame. Would explain why Sophie didn't know him as well, too. Still, Sophie was so easy to talk to that it was easy to forget she hadn't known him for years.

"Sophie!" He protested, laughing. "I've only been there two weeks, and one of them was Spring Break! No romantic interests yet. I've barely had a chance to make friends." It was fair, though. If he was going to bring up her lovelife, she could comment on his.

"Hey now. You could have walked in one day and fallen head over heels for someone. Can't really blame me for asking. Were I an undisclosed number of years younger? I'd be ditching your dad and going for Ford Version 2.0." She thought about that for a moment, then shook her head. "But really, that's a bit too creepy a scenario to think about, so let's ignore that, shall we?"

She finished her mimosa, and just smiled at him - it was impossible not to enjoy him.

He laughed, a faint blush on his cheeks. It was normal for them to have a playful back-and-forth, and Sam was comfortable with it. He flirted a little with Parker, too, but he didn't know her as well, and she tended to give him weird looks sometimes. "No fairytale romances at the magic school yet," Sam said with a chuckle. He hadn't been dating anyone at his old school either, which he was grateful for, now. He hadn't been forced to endure the horrors of Linkin Park or Dashboard Confessionals to grieve over his lost love.

"Tell me more about the school... I know it's a lot of kids who've come from other places, right? And it can't be like your normal high school at home... is it all still the same subjects, or is chemistry class suddenly a lot more exciting?" It was a strange enough thing to be thrust in the world as an adult, though she got to pick and choose what part of the strangeness she needed to deal with. He was most likely exposed to it all day at school. It'd be a bit amusing to her really if Sam ended up the most well adjusted of the bunch.

"Yeah, it's definitely different," he said, finishing off a piece of fruit. "The core subects are the same--for me, at least. I think the curriculum is really individualized for each student. I think one of the girls in my english class has some potions class instead of chemistry. I still have to take normal chem, but there's a lot of crazy electives I can take next year." He was kind of excited about all of the weird classes he could take. "Elvish, and this one that teaches about different types of magic from different worlds and stuff. Strictly theory. I'm not going to be pulling rabbits out of hats any time soon." He grinned.

"Elvish? Well, I have always said it's smart to know as many languages as you can." With a practiced finger motion, she summoned the server, silently handing him a credit card to go run. "I h a stage magician once... the rabbit thing is a bit more tedious when realize how much time a guy spends with a rabbit to learn it properly. Just warn me if you take some odd potions type class, and I'll know to be careful if you ever offer to cook for me." Smiling, she sat back in her seat, dropping her napkin to the side of her plate.

Sam smirked. "I'm not taking any potions classes. I hear it's ridiculously hard, and basic chemistry is bad enough. Don't really want to be a wizard or any of that stuff. I don't even know if I can, really. But it's kind of interesting being around wizards and mutants and all of that weird stuff."

He knew better than to argue with Sophie about the check. He might as well argue with his dad.

"I've only met a few of the more... extranormal sorts, for lack of a better term. And that was mostly during the week right before you came. There was a bit of persecution going on - not pretty at all. I think both Parker and Hardison have had some dealings with them; in fact Hardison might be in a comic-lovers wet dream if we're being honest. It's good for you to be exposed to it though."

When the server returned she took the folder, signing the check and placing them both on the table, the card slipping back into her purse.

"We all blamed him too when we first arrived. Seems like a natural response." She shrugged a bit as he mentioned Parker's injuries. "She had a concussion, and it made her loopy for a few days. I think she's back to normal. Well, normal for Parker. It was... an interesting experience. Obviously we've no powers the purifiers would be going after, but she'd been helping a child and got caught. It all worked itself out." She was about to mention something along the lines of having been in worse situations, but remembered he wasn't aware of all that. At least, she assumed he wasn't. "Be glad you missed it. Sam nodded. "That's good. Glad she's better." She'd mentioned a concussion, but he didn't want to push her too much on the point. She'd seemed pretty out of it, and Sam had been worried. "Definitely glad I missed it. Doesn't sound fun."

"Parker has a habit of bouncing back. And I think she's seeing someone, which always offers a good incentive." that made her smile.. Parker had grown to be akin to a younger sister for her.

"The rest of my day?" Sophie shrugged lightly at the question. "I've nothing particular planned. I'm between jobs right now, so I thought I might scope out the new exhibit at the Met on the Korean Renaissance?" It never hurt to keep one's skills honed.
