Who: Sophie and Rose Frost
When: Last Friday, right when the powers started manifesting
Where: Sophie's room
Warnings: Oh, get your mind out of the gutter! They're sisters! Pervert.

Sophie had spent the past week in her room. She hadn't wanted to do anything, see anyone, or eat anything. She'd picked at the food Rose brought her, but stayed shut off to everyone else. She'd alternated between crying outbursts and near catatonic states. She was devastated and angry and helpless. She'd lost Quentin and she hadn't even helped Darius. It was all stupid and horrible and useless.

Then suddenly.. it stopped. Everything was quiet. Her own emotions and the thoughts from everyone around her had all gone silent. She hadn't felt this kind of silence in.. as long as she could remember. Things seemed so clear now. Clear.. but empty.

She stood, walking away from the bed. She looked down at her hands, unsurprised to see the diamond skin. She sat down in front of the vanity, eyes meeting her reflection in the mirror. "Rose?" she called, her voice soft.

For her part, Rose had been playing the diligent sister. Since Quentin had died, she'd gotten quieter due to the guilt she felt for not having saved him. But that feeling came and went. And Rose didn't allow herself to wallow too much; she couldn't be sure when Sophie might call on her for help or company. It seemed the Frost household had grown silent with Sophie's grief. And the longer it went on, the more Rose saw her home as a large, white tomb. She missed activity. She missed Sophie's laughter. She missed Quentin's visits. And she was only cheered up by time with Esme or her father. Or Gar, who managed to bring noise and color with him wherever he went.

Rose had taken to the habit of sitting outside of Sophie's room for an hour or two after school. She waited and did homework in the hallway or meditated like her father might have. When she heard Sophie, she almost thought she'd imagined the voice. Slowly, she rose to her feet and knocked at Sophie's door. "Did you say something?"

"Yes. Come inside." She ran a finger over the smooth, hard lines of her face. It was strange, not to feel any give. There was no warmth, either. She wasn't ice cold, but no warmth emanated from her. She knew the basics of this form from her Mother. Her emotions were dampened and she couldn't use her telepathy. She was surprisingly calm.

She turned to the door as Rose entered. She gave a small smile. "Thank you. For being here."

"You're..." If things had been a little different, Rose might have taken survey of the room. She might have looked around to gauge what Sophie had spent her mourning period doing. But she was distracted by the fact that her sister was a walking diamond. Rose was used to this sort of thing from her mother, not from Sophie. She was so distracted that she didn't notice that her hair was far darker than it had been just a few moments earlier. "You're a diamond?" From everything she'd read and heard, she had no idea that Sophie was supposed to share their mother's secondary mutation, too.

Sophie nodded, very matter-of-fact about the whole thing. "You're a redhead," she responded. Rose had certainly had time to dye it, but usually Sophie picked up on her sister's surface thoughts and knew about her plans ahead of time. She hadn't exactly been attentive to her family, though. She probably missed a lot of things. "It looks really good. Especially with that shirt."

"I'm..." Rose raised a brow and walked closer to Sophie and glanced at herself in the mirror. She was a redhead. But she hadn't dyed her hair recently. "I'm not supposed to be a redhead." Rose looked more than a little surprised. Between Sophie's new mutation and this, she had the bad feeling that something was going on. "How do you feel?"

"Stronger," she answered. "Calmer." She didn't feel her emotions as strongly, but it wasn't as though she felt cold or dead inside. This was better. She was sure she could change back if she wanted to, but she didn't. She liked being like this, for now, at least. This was what she needed.

"Interesting," she said, watching Rose in the mirror. "Think brown." She wondered if Rose's whole body would change, or just her hair. It seemed a strange enough power--if that's what it was. Though, shapeshifters were common enough. Maybe Gar had rubbed off on Rose.

Rose was a little too distracted by Sophie to listen to the command right away. She'd seen their mother in her diamond form before, so it wasn't exactly shocking to see Sophie like this. Still, it was interesting. After a moment, Rose reached up and played with Sophie's hair, which was oddly brittle, but moved.

After another minute, she turned to the mirror and stared at her hair again. She tried to think brown at it. After a moment, she noticed her roots go darker. The color spread slowly, at first. "This... could be useful," she smiled. It would be so much easier than having to dye her hair. Rose had the feeling, of course, that this wouldn't last for very long.

Sophie smiled a bit. "Should be fun for Spring Break." It felt a little strange, when Rose had played with Sophie's hair. Not bad, just strange. This form would take some getting used to. And preparation. She couldn't very well style her hair after she'd changed into it. Was it wrong of her to be thinking about hair and beaches right now? Surely the week she'd spent grieving non-stop had earned her a little reprieve.

"We're still going," she said, a hint of question to the statement. She didn't know if Rose had been second-guessing their plans since Sophie's disappearance into her room.

Rose hadn't been entirely sure about their Spring Break plans, uncertain whether Sophie could handle fun and sun while still mourning. "If you want to go, of course," she nodded, cautiously avoiding a direct mention of Quentin. Rose knew how diamond forms worked - emotions shut down a bit. But maybe Sophie was different and she didn't want to tempt her sister into another crying fit.

"Good," Sophie said with a small smile. "We could both use it." She hmm'd to herself thoughtfully. "Rose? It probably goes without saying, but.. I need you to watch out for me. Make sure I don't do anything stupid or reboundy. I don't think I would, but I've never been through this before." Unless losing her sisters counted. In a lot of ways, this felt the same.

Rose looked sober when she responded, any hint of humor disappearing from her face. "I will." A pause. "I have been. And I'll keep watching." She hesitated only slightly before reaching out and laying a hand on Sophie's arm. It felt oddly cool to the touch. Rose didn't especially like it, but if the diamond form could make her feel better, she'd deal. "It'll get better. You'll get better."

She turned, giving Rose a small smile. "Thank you." Maybe Rose made her feel stronger. Maybe Rose made her miss being herself. Maybe she guessed Rose wouldn't be comfortable seeing her like this. Her skin seemed to shimmer and warm as the diamond faded back into her natural skintone.

"You should try pink," she said, excitement dancing in her eyes."Your hair." Maybe she was forcing it. She could feel that the control over her emotions was barely existant. "Or green!"

"You're welcome," Rose said, watching the way her sister's skin stopped sparkling and returned to its normal hue. As soon as Sophie was requesting odd colors, Rose was trying to oblige, if just to try and keep her sister from sinking back into the misery she'd been feeling lately. Rose knew, of course, that all of that sadness wouldn't just go away at once. But she figured it would be a process. And giving Sophie reasons to smile would probably help.

"Pink." Rose smiled as she saw her hair turn bright. "I dyed my hair this color once. I was... horribly misguided in my youth." She smiled. And then she focused on green. Her hair went first. And then, went thoughts of Gar hit her, she noticed something strange, "Oh!" Her skin, starting from the top of her head, turned green.

Sophie grinned at the pink. "It looks good!" she protested Rose's derision of it, but she could imagine it would not be fun to have pink hair for more than about an hour.

When Rose went green, Sophie laughed. "You guys will be so cute together!" But as amused as she was, there were tears in Sophie's eyes. Stupid! she chided herself. "Sorry," she said, wiping at her eyes as she started to frost over. "I'm really sorry." She didn't want Rose to think she couldn't talk about Gar without Sophie turning into a complete basketcase. That was dumb, and not fair.

"It's okay, Sophie," Rose said. Her tone was calm, but she felt more than a little surprised at the sudden tears and just the barest hint of guilt gnaw at her. "I'm-" She stopped before apologizing because Rose knew it was stupid to be sorry that she had a boyfriend. The green washed away and, because her emotions weren't entirely in check, she started to change colors. "Damn it."

Rose made a face and focused. When she was back to normal, she sighed. "I don't... I don't expect you to be all better all of a sudden." She caught Sophie's eye, "So, it's okay. You don't have to say sorry."

She leaned back against Rose, getting a hold of herself. "We had a link. Did I tell you that?" She wasn't crying now, and her tone had become calm. "It was after Esme hijacked my brain. I wasn't sure I wanted anyone else in my head at first." She pushed her hair out of her eyes.

"It didn't matter how far away he was, we could still reach each other. He was always there." She took a deep breath. The diamond form blocked out a lot of the emotion. She could talk about it with some rationality--that was a lot more than she'd been able to do all week.

"Is Gar still here?"

Rose's hair grew dark with her mood. "I didn't know." After a long pause, she said, "I'm so sorry, Sophie." She rested a thin hand on Sophie's arm and ignored how cool it was.

"Gar?" Sophie's question threw Rose off. "I think he's still around." If not, he was easily fetched. Gar, like any well trained pet or boyfriend, came when called. "Why?"

Sophie nodded, tilting her head back against Rose and looking up at her. She wondered idly if she weighed more in diamond form. "I think maybe playing with a puppy would cheer me up a little." Her skin seemed to shift between the diamond and her flesh, as if she couldn't quite make up her mind where she wanted to be. A small smile formed on her lips. "And I'm not sure Mom will let us bring in another stray, besides him." Okay, so she wasn't that funny. She didn't have to be, right now.

She would be okay. She wasn't alone. She had Rose, and she had their mom. And Darius, if he ever came home.

Rose couldn't help but smile a little at that. Gar spent at least part of his time at the Frost mansion visiting Esme in animal form and letting the little one pull on his tail. Rose doubted he'd mind being Sophie's puppy for a little while, especially if it would improve her mood. "I'll tell him to come by." Rose thought for a moment. "Tell him to be a bunny for you. It's precious."

Sophie smiled some. The diamond was gone, which Sophie hadn't even realized yet. "Thanks." She turned around in her chair to face Rose. She was feeling a little better. And a green bunny sounded ridiculously cute. "He doesn't hump the furniture, does he?"

Rose didn't point out that Sophie wasn't a diamond. She was too busy snorting and bringing a mouth to her hand to cover up the indelicate laugh. "Not around me. But he does play with string. And plays fetch when he's a dog."

Sophie smiled, glad to see the laughter. She flopped onto Rose's side, wrapping her arms around one of Rose's. The physical contact was good. She perched her chin on Rose's shoulder. "Can he fetch when he's a kitty? Or play with string as a dog?"
