Entry tags:mackenzie park, marsden park, raymond wood

Who: Mackenzie and Marsden Park, Raymond Wood
What: Meeting, discussing jobs
When/Where: Backdated to after Mack's post, Shake Your Samba studio NYC
Warnings: Possible mentions of serious situations, nothing past R.

Mackenzie waited anxiously on the steps outside the studio, hoping beyond hope her brother's quiet tendencies wouldn't fail him now. How had Ray made it in the building without her or Marsden noticing? She frowned, shifting the bag of possessions on her shoulder, before looking at it and frowning. She really didn't need to bring that to 'an interview'. Slipping down the steps, she pulled the wallet and the ID out, before stashing the bag in some bushes. Mack hesitated before she let go, knowing it could be gone when she came back. But protecting who she and her brother were was more important than some trinkets, right?

She turned as she heard the door open, jumping back to seem less like she was hiding in the plants.

"Were you planning to come in?" Ray asked, his tall and lanky form filling the doorway. He stepped back, hand on the knob. "Or did you lose something in the bushes?" He tilted his head. He didn't want to get off to a bad start, if the girl and her brother had legitimate IDs for his studio, he wanted to see what they could do.

The brother, Marsden, was already inside. Ray had caught him trying to sneak out. It was an odd, and awkward situation to be sure, but he hadn't cast Marsden out on his ear. He had been drop kicked into the so called alternate universe only a couple weeks earlier, he still acutely remembered how unsettling it had been, and he was willing to give these kids a chance.

"Wh-where's my brother?" She stepped out of the bushes and up the steps without commenting on his question; he didn't need to know that, yet. Looking past Ray, she caught sight of Marsden inside, giving him a questioning little glance, more concerned with his safety than Ray, at least at the moment.

"He's here." Ray made a face at her. "He's the one who was trespassing." Ray shrugged. "Not a big deal. I'm sure we can work it out."

Marsden nodded a subtle nod to his sister. He was fine, everything was fine, no need to get upset.

Mackenzie's eyes snapped back to Ray, when he mentioned their tresspassing. "Not our fault we ended up here." Which was the truth- she didn't think it was their fault, it was their parents. Never mind all of the science fiction stuff the man had told her earlier. Which, come to think... meeting with the crazy man, in his building, at night. Really, Mackenzie?

"Maybe we should just be going." She held out a hand for her brother, figuring if the guy was mad at them for being there, they could forget the job.

Ray shook his head. "There's no need to run off. Where would you go? You were dropped off here, for a reason." Ray pinched the bridge of his nose. "Forgive me if I'm coming off a bit harsh, this is as confusing to me, as it must be for you."

Marsden moved closer to Mackenzie. "It's all right. He seems like a nice guy. We should give him a chance."

Well, he did seem to be trying, even though he had no reason. And he didn't look too... threatening. Mars' words settled it for her, and she finally stepped inside the building to be next to her brother, hand brushing his just for the contact.

"Okay. I." Mack pursed her lips, looking down to her feet. "I'm just confused, I think." She wasn't sure what, if anything, Marsden had said to Ray while she'd been gone, so she'd wait for one of them to speak again, before giving anything away.

Ray nodded. "That's understandable. You're lucky, though. You came in together. most people don't get that luxury, and land here alone, from what I understand." Of course, that was best, in Ray's case. He didn't need his wife tagging along, or Paulo, or Orlinda. He could do without any of them. Since he'd settled in, he was quite content to be 'alone' as it were.

"I was talking to your brother, just now." Ray spared a glance at Marsden, who gave Mack's hand a firm squeeze. "He tells me you two have been dancing since you were very small."

"Since we could walk. Ballet all our lives. I've been in ballroom about five years," Part of their 'charm school' fad their parents had tried when Mariah had started on the 'vitamins'. Despite the bad taste it left in their mouth, Mack stuck with it, finding she enjoyed the steps- and she could teach Marsden to lead, so they could still dance together.

She intentionally didn't mention the idea of their landing in the universe alone. She wasn't sue what she would have done if that had been the case. She'd never been without her brother. Just the idea made her anxious- but she couldn't show it. She had to be strong, for Mars' sake.

"Most parents would want their son to stay away from ballet." It wasn't a sexist comment, but an observation from someone who had experienced the resistance first hand. Maybe n ot ballet, but dance, in general. His father had forbidden it, which had only made Ray more determined to dance, when no one was watching.

"Ballroom is a good one, for teaching. You think you're up to teaching?" Ray asked. Marsden glanced at his sister, with a feeling of being in over their heads, and no idea what to do about it.

"We took it together." It was obvious by the way Mackenzie straightened at the comment, that it wasn't a good idea to mention it again.

Mack returned the glance, but nodded a little. "I could teach. Basics, at least. Ballroom's not what I'm good at." She knew she was stretching it, to agree to teaching, but she didn't want to turn down the offer of a job. They'd need the money.

"What are you good at?" Ray asked. he walked away, into an adjoining room.he returned a moment later with three bottles of water, handing one to each of the, and looking to Mack for the answer to his question.

Mackenzie had a quick discussion of glances with her brother while Ray was gone, turning back to him with a sheepish sort of look when he came back. "Uh, thanks," She messed with the water, while she thought of how to answer.

"I like jazz. Contemporary. I can do salsa, with the right partner. I'll learn whatever you need," She gave him a little smile, taking a drink. Hoping that was good enough.

"Why don't you two show me what you can do on the floor, and we'll go from there?" Ray nodded and pointed to the middle of the room with his water bottle. He wanted to see the two in action, because the generally mousy presence of the boy wasn't convincing him they were going to be an asset. Of course, he knew all too well how a meek and mild personality could be completely transformed, in the proper setting. He wanted to see it for himself, before he made any decisions.

With a little nod, Mackenzie set her water bottle down at her feet and toed off her shoes, before heading for the middle of the floor with Mars. There was an awkward moment, then, before they settled on starting a salsa they'd obviously done many times before. It was stiff, to start, even with the beat hummed between them. But after a second, when the beat took over and the two settled into a rhythm, it became a much easier, more graceful thing.

If Ray looked close, he would see Mack's eyes were closed throughout the dance, a little smile on her face; she trusted Mars completely in the lead, to let him spin and dip her how the dance required. She looked relaxed, much more than she would when the dance finally ended.

Ray watched the two dance, and recognised it as something magical. So it wasn't a matter of the both of them teaching, it was a matter of them teaching together. Ray could deal with that. It made sense, when the style of dance required partners.

As they wound down, he clapped his appreciation for the show. If he noticed something slightly off about Marsden, he didn't comment. The boy was a natural on the dance floor, and his assumption had been correct, he came alive, when he danced.

"All right. Here's the deal. I'm opening in about a week's time. I want the two of you to teach together. I'll leave the rest up to you."

Mackenzie smiled softly, nodding once. "We can do that, sir, thank you." She gave Mars' hand a little squeeze where she held it, before sobering a little at the look on his face. "I. Well, we'd have to. Talk about the schedule, of course." Were they in school? Would he expect them to be? She left that open, figuring it was better to ask some question. Make it seem they had something else to be doing.

Ray nodded. "Well, seeing as how you apparently live here now, why don't you go and figure out what you want to do, and let me know?" Ray suggested. he'd seen them dance, he knew they were good, and he wanted them on his staff. he sure as hell wasn't going to kick them out, if they had nowhere else to go. "There's an apartment upstairs. No need to squat."

Eyes darted from Ray to Marsden, a flicker of shocked accusation, before she bit it back, looking back to Ray. "We don't want to put you out. We didn't know the building was yours, we just... ended up here," She ended lamely, running a hand through her hair.

"Until we figure things out, at least." She gave him a sad little smile, before turning back to Mars. "I'll go get my stuff. Meet you upstairs?"

"I'll wait for you," Marsden said, voice soft and low. He avoided eye contact with Ray, keeping his focus on his sister.

Ray started toward his office. "I'll be in my office," he said and disappeared behind the door.

"He's kind of creepy," Marsden said, once the door shut and they were alone. "I don't know about this, Mack."

"You're the one who told him we didn't have anywhere to go," She hissed back, before sighing softly. "He might be creepy, but what else can we do, bro? It's okay. Just until we find something else." She nodded once, as much for her own benefit as Mars', before turning to head back out to the bushes, grabbing her bag before heading inside.

"Yeah. Just till we find something else." Mars nodded. He scratched at his jaw, and shifted his weight as he waited for Mack to get her stuff. He didn't question why she'd left the bag outside, he just wanted to get upstairs, where they could be alone.

When she came back inside, she smiled a little reassuringly to Marsden, before waving over to the stairs- obviously they knew their way around. Once they were a safe distance from the office, she turned to him, a look of concern on her face.

"How much did you tell him, anyway?"

Mars shook his head. "I didn't tell him anything. Just that we didn't know how we got here, we were just...here. And that you went out to get food. And that we could dance, that's all. I didn't tell him anything."

Her face softened. "I- sorry. You're right. This isn't... right. But really, he's offering to help. And it's better than the system," That was, of course, assuming Ray wasn't going to call the cops on them. She frowned at the realization, but bit it back in favor of heading into the apartment.

It was obviously lived in, which earned a sigh all its own, but she just moved over to the couch, setting her bag down. "The food's in the bag. I think... do you want to come down and talk to him with me, or you want me to go? Because this," A hand wave around, "Is pushing it,"

"You go." Mars went for the bag of food. "I mean, unless you want me to go with?" He knew he was useless in confrontations. He tended to stay back, afraid to assert himself. Mackenzie handled that side of things, every time, and he was content to let her.

"No, it's okay. I just didn't want to leave you out, if I have to kick his ass, " She was teasing- mostly- to put them at ease.

"I'll be back in a bit, okay?" Walking over to give her brother a hug, just becase she hadn't in a while, she went for the door, trotting down the steps to stop outside Ray's office.

Now, all she had to do was work up the nerve to knock.

Marsden opened the bag and dipped his hand in, going after the food. He felt bad, letting Mack go down to face Ray alone, but he really was hungry, and he knew his sister could take care of herself.

Ray was at his desk, computer on, though he could have been playing Solitaire just as easily as anything else. He looked up, with that awkward sense someone was there, but she'd have to make herself known, before he acknowledged her.

"What's the catch?" Her tone was defensive, although not as much as she could have been; she was used to being blunt at the best of times, and this definately wasn't ideal.

"There's no catch," Ray said with a shake of his head. He looked up from the computer, eyes bright. "You need a place to stay. I should have told you my stuff's up there, but I'll bring it down to the office." It seemed simple, to him. "You're working for me, you can't be living on the streets, and whatever cash you've got in your new wallets, it isn't enough to get you an apartment. I doubt you're even old enough to sign off on a lease, yourselves, without a parent or guardian."

Mackenzie frowned, taking a step inside but leaving the door open, in case she needed to call for Mars. "People don't just decide to help random kids, sir. I don't want you to think we're ungrateful, but I'm not staying here just for you to-" She frowned, looking to the floor. "We can't go home, okay? We just. Can't. No cops, no..." She shook her head. She knew how that would sound; that leaving it vague would let him think what he wanted, and she was fine with that, as long as he got the point.

"Look, Mack, is it? Mack. I've only been here a couple of weeks, myself, but it's long enough to know there are no rules, this place, this world, does what it wants. You two dropped down, squatting in this studio I just bought, with IDs that say you work here." Ray stood, and moved to the front of his desk, perched on the corner. "I don't know about you, but I don't think it's all just a series of coincidences. You're here for a reason. You and your brother are welcome to the apartment upstairs. I'll clear my stuff out, and figure something else out. I've got the means, I'm guessing, at this point, you don't have the means."

She might have faltered a little when he stood up, but it was momentary, face softening at his words. "I.. should just leave you alone, then. I don't know if we're still in school here, or not. If we're not here. You can get ahold of us on those things." She wasn't sure what she meant by the comment- whether she thought they were going to leave, or if maybe she wanted someone to know how to contact them. This entire thing was just too bizarre.

Seeming uncertain, she frowned a little, turning and heading back out the door.

Ray nodded, and let her go. He didn't want to upset her, freak her out any more than she already was. He'd wait it out, see what the kids decided. He hoped they made the right choice, but they were kids. he knew it was entirely possible they'd just skip town, never to be seen again.

Marsden had eaten half the food Mack had brought back, the rest wrapped up and put in the fridge. Curious, he'd walked around the apartment, though he hadn't touched anything. Or, at least, not much. Nothing major. Mostly he'd just looked around.

He went toward the door, when he heard Mack coming back.
