Jack could tell that something was wrong, and moreso than usual, even just over the text. Though perhaps that was more Scarecrow's doing than his own. It hardly mattered, however, he'd gone to the cellar to fetch some of the good liquor (which really was any of it) before retiring to the sitting room to wait for Miniver's arrival, sprawled into his favorite chair, toes stretched towards the fireplace, looking altogether too catlike for his own good just at present and quite possibly nodding off.
