"Well ... technically, yes and no," he says, slowly, but the wheels are turning in his head. "You're no longer my superior officer, for one thing, so the chain of command isn't immediately threatened, and in this world, in this capacity, our relationship would be considered civilian in origin, not professional. I am at this moment not a Member, and neither are you."
He pauses, then. He's all too aware of the possibilities, of the ins and outs of the code of ethics they are sworn to as Members.
And then, it occurs to him.
"There is another technical provision," he says slowly, watching her for her reaction.
