The family. Not his family. A family now broken by his presence-- or rather, his non-presence. He's not sure he could think of the right thing to say to them even if he had all the time in the world. How do you tell someone you've replaced the man they know, possibly permanently? Taken away their lover, their spouse, their partner, without so much as a goodbye?
But time is not an ally, and they deserve to know, more than he deserves to stay in his comfort zone. Not that he has a comfort zone to even speak of at the moment.
