Who: Clark Kent. Lois Lane.
What: You know what. THE TALK. The one they should've had in Superman 2 if he hadn't wiped her memories, and the one they should've had in Superman Returns, but didn't.
Where: London. Some nice little restaurant down the street from Lois' apartment. I don't know, that's Clark's description.
When: 6 pm. One week after Apocalypse was defeated.

Lois was running late.

It wasn't her fault, of course. She'd meant to leave early, go home, change, and make it to the restaurant a little early. But there'd been problems in the newsroom. The network had been down and the editors hadn't gotten copies of all the articles they needed. Then some political bigwig had decided to hold a press conference right at 5, which meant it didn't get started until at least 5:10, and it dragged on and on.

Lois had been required to stay, for some reason she couldn't fathom, and usually, she would've been the first one to volunteer to stay late. But now she was chomping at the bit. Her editor kept shooting her odd looks, it wasn't common for Lois Lane to want to get out of the newsroom. Finally, the press conference ended, and Lois practically ran out.

Her flat wasn't all that far from the newsroom, but it would take awhile in traffic. She considered walking home, that might be faster. Even in high heels. But who was she kidding? She wouldn't make it in time, even if she didn't go home to change.

Lois knew Clark didn't like cell phones, but she felt silly trying to get Superman's attention just for this. Dialing Clark's number on her cell phone as she rushed out of the building, Lois hailed a taxi. One happened to be dropping someone off and she hurried to claim it. As she was climbing in, Clark's phone went to voicemail. Great. "Clark, it's Lois. I'm going to be a little late. We had some problems in the newsroom and... well, you know how it is." Lois paused to give the driver directions. "I should be there, I should only be a few minutes late. Five. Maybe ten. I'll see you soon."

She closed her phone and glanced at her watch. It was pretty close to 6 already. She really hoped Clark got the message then. The last thing he needed was thinking she'd stood him up.

He was there and had fumbled with his phone when he heard the call, but dropped it, skidded it across the restaurant, caught it up and pressed receive... just as it went to voice mail. He sighed as he waited for it to cycle through, and as he waited for Lois.

Late, again.

He was sure she was coming. She would not blow this off, right?

Right.

He thought.

He looked down at their table, where a small box sat, and he was not sure what to do, finally putting it in a suit jacket.

He had to do this right, figure this out.

Why was it that he had no clue what to do?

She sort of hoped Clark hadn't answered his phone because he was out saving the world or rescuing a cat out of a tree or something. Maybe he wasn't already at the restaurant. Maybe he wasn't already waiting. She looked at her watch for the 10th time in 30 seconds, willing the horrible traffic to lighten up. Why couldn't she have superspeed?

Lois thought of calling him again, but if he was out saving the world, he wouldn't be able to answer yet. Or maybe her voicemail hadn't gotten through or his phone was turned off. Finally, traffic lightened enough so that her driver could zoom past a slow-moving car and get her half a block away from the restaurant. She hurriedly paid him and dashed out of the taxi and into the restaurant. She was only 7 minutes late. 7 minutes wasn't bad. Trying to control her breathing, she scanned the restaurant for Clark as she was approached by the hostess.

That's when she found out Clark was already here. Out of all the times he showed up late to things because he was saving someone, this was the one time he was on time and she was late. As the hostess led her back to the table, Lois had the sudden urge to check her hair and makeup one more time, but it was too late for that now.

He stood and smiled, seeing her, relieved. She was here, and okay!

His x-ray vision flashed and he sighed in relief as he saw she was uninjured. Just work, then. Good.

"Hello, Lois. Good to see you."

"Hi, Clark." She offered a somewhat crooked, apologetic smile as she was seated. "I'm sorry. We got held up at work and it was one problem after another with the network and then the last minute press conference..." she trailed off, trying to catch her breath. "I hope you haven't been waiting long."

He smiled wryly.

"It's okay, Lois. You don't have to explain. I understand. Problems delaying someone is something I am familiar with."

There was a wry lift to his eyebrows as he poured her water from a carafe.

"Rest. No need to hurry tonight. It's all okay."

He nodded.

He opened his mouth to respond, then shut it until the waiter was gone.

When he could talk again, he was quiet.

"I want a world where people can take care of themselves, where only normal injuries happen and they can be treated or cured. I have been here less than a month and have fought a villain, stopped forty robberies, over 20 murders, and saved lives during everything natural disasters to man made insanities. The world needs a superman. Heck, this world seems to need a lot more than one. But I wish it did not."

She listened and wished she could help him, wished she could take away the pain of what he had to see, and the horrible images of the injuries and deaths he tried to stop. She wished she could help this wonderful man who gave so much and received so little.

She stared, looking into his eyes as all these thoughts came to mind, before she broke eye contact and cleared her throat. "I wish... I had powers to help you," she said seriously.

He smiled softly.

"You don't need powers to help, Lois, but thank you. That kind of world will only happens if people learn and grow, and that takes education. If I could do anything at all, and the world had more people to protect it, I would try to teach, even though I don't know if I could."

He smiled softly, blushing.

"Yes. Yes, we are. At last."

His eyes held hers, warmth and caring in them. He grinned, goofily.

"Maybe we can even go dancing someday."

He smiled.

"I just want you to not regret me."

A shadow of older pain flashed across his eyes, and then he smiled softly.

"So... how does Niagara sound, one week from tonight?"

His heart beat faster as he remembered their first time there.

"How could you think I'd regret you?" The pain in his eyes registered and she glanced down. "What had I said to you?" She knew she'd said a lot of hurtful things to him in the past.

Her breath caught again. "Clark...?" Was he saying what she thought he was saying? She hadn't been to Niagara once since then. Richard had wanted to take her once but she'd refused adamantly and he'd never brought it up again.

Lois felt like shaking him. "Clark Kent," she said with forced calm, "have you forgotten you were gone for five years and I've been here for another year and a half right after you came back? I've had a lot of time to think."

She kissed him back gently and smiled. "It does seem fitting. How long do you want to stay?"

"I'm sorry, Lois. Guess I am still working on that."

He chuckled and bit back forever.

"A few days. We can talk, and wander, and be together, like normal couples are supposed to."

Then he grinned.

"And I can take you flying through the falls at night."

She smiled. "I like being with you. That's all there is to learn." Lois felt like being selfish for a little while and having it be just the two of them. It'd been so long without Clark, without Superman, that she was soaking up his presence. It was thrilling being up here in the sky with him. And when he held her like that, she wasn't going to be the one to cut the trip short.
