Marco realized about two seconds after the words left his mouth what he'd just done. His face fell just a little, and he held up his hands. "Sorry. Didn't think." He genuinely hadn't meant it to dig at a scar. He wasn't above that, he just hadn't intended it this time.
This was rapidly turning into a very awkward, depressing conversation. Something told him that the two of them would have to talk about this some day, either as them or their younger selves. But now was probably not the time.
Not that he wasn't worried. He was. He was worried that the younger him had hooked up with this girl, Cooper or Ceridwen or whatever she wanted to call herself, out of some...something. Something that he couldn't quite put his finger on, but deep down knew all the same. He was worried that the younger him was using this girl as a break, some stability between his more whirlwind romances. He couldn't see himself doing it intentionally, but if he were totally honest with himself? It was a possibility. The thought that the younger version of himself might have done that and then let it get so out of control that he'd end up married to and conceiving a child with this girl...it terrified him.
That, more than anything, was what was causing his nervousness. "So how long have I been with Ceridwen?" Hopefully this, at least, would be a safe, scar-free subject. "And, uh, how did it start? Do you know?" Or maybe not. But he needed the information. In the coldest terms possible, he needed to do a tactical analysis of the situation, and right now he just didn't have the information necessary to do it. He was hoping Tobias wouldn't be able to tell that's what he was doing, but the two of them had known each other long enough that it was possible he would.
