"Mmm," Death murmured as she cut into her waffle, "I don't really think she's going to kill you. It's not your time yet. I hope you don't drive her too crazy before the wed-" She would have finished her sentence if not for the fact that Gloria passed at that very moment. "Gloria!" Death waved at the waitress, who stopped at their table for a moment. "How are you? How's Mark?"
The older woman glanced from Jason to Death and back, trying to figure out when Death had arrived. She knew there was something a little strange about Death and all her friends, but she wasn't aware of the full extent of their strangeness. "I'm good, honey. And Markie's great. Got himself a little girlfriend now." She paused for a beat, a warm smile on her face. "When'd you get here, Didi?"
"I was always here," Death said, matter-of-factly and cheerful as ever.
Gloria pondered this a moment before nodding. "Oh yeah." She sounded a little thoughtful. After a half second she shook herself out of it. "Everything good here? Need anything else?"
"No thanks," Death smiled, "But thank you for asking."
Gloria walked off then to check on another table. Death speared some food and shoved it into her mouth. Though it was full when she spoke, her words were clear. "Invites. You were talking invites," she reminded herself. "Inviting my family is probably a good idea. I'll keep brother-sister from misbehaving too badly." All Jason needed was for Desire to play games at his wedding. "Do you know where it's happening?"
