Who: Slates and Kai (A/K/A Natural Enemies)
What: Getting their drink on
Where/When: A nameless pub in a nameless city/Tonight
Warnings: Possible

Impossible to pretend he didn't know the date. The fact the anniversary fell between Christmas and New Years, regardless if he celebrated, made it difficult to ignore. So he was, as the seven years before, melancholy and irritable, and wanting to get drunk. He remembered the first year, the first full year under the curse. He'd gotten so drunk he'd woken up face down in a back alley like a piece of trash. He hadn't stopped feeling that way, and he felt like he was just waiting for the garbage truck to come along and pick him up.

He was what he was. He couldn't change it, he had to accept it. He wasn't ashamed, though he didn't generally advertise. He took care to protect himself and innocent mortals would would be seen as a snack to his alter ego, when the moon rose full in the sky. He had awareness. Too much, sometimes, and it drove him half mad. The anniversary of his turning wasn't the only night he indulged in drink, but it was the one night he allowed himself to wallow in the misery of his plight.

This year, his recklessness extended to inviting a vampire to join him for drinks. not just any vampire. The famed and fabled Malakai Chmlyk, subject of much lore and legend among Slates' people. People, or animals, he wondered. Hrm. He'd have to ponder that. But, for the moment, he was scanning the street, looking for sign of the vampire who had killed his grandfather, and done the whole town a favor, back in the day, regardless of the brutality of the death and the contempt that spread like wide fire, giving more strength to the rift between weres and vamps.

It probably wasn't the wisest choice for Malakai to offer himself up to drink with the animal, but he'd been feeling off balance himself. Not an anniversary, nothing so solid. Nothing so excusable. But still, his guilt had been triggered, hard, and if he could put himself a bit at ease by helping the dog through a tough time, while once again getting drunk, he wouldn't turn it down.

He landed on the other side of the port-key gracefully, having perfected the art in the few months he'd been living in this strange world. The large cities were always overrun with the supernatural, but something familiar caught his sense, something like home, and he turned to see the man he'd met online, weaving through the crowd in his direction. His hands were in his pockets, fists, trying to steel himself against the strange feeling of the mass of people around him.

"Malakai," Slates called, catching the man's scent. Vampire, not man. He knew that scent anywhere. "Glad you could make it." He hadn't been sure, to be honest, that Malakai would bother to show up. He was decidedly delighted that he had.

"My social calendar was empty. Imagine that," The accent was still mostly Russian, although it had settled some with living in the states. It had never been a consideration of Malakai's to stand the man up. It wasn't his style.

With a little shrug, he reached out, offering his hand to shake. "Nice to meet you, finally.

"And you," Slates took hold of Kai's hand. He felt the inherent power. Kai was someone to be wary of, and Slates would watch his back. Carefully. Not that he suspected Kai would intentionally harm him, but if he didn't watch his own back, no one would be looking out for him, and he couldn't be too careful. Appearances and promises of civility could be deceiving.

"Shall we?" He gestured toward the bar at hand. He was anxious to get the first drink in him.

Malakai nodded, turning to head towards the bar. Ht wasn't trying to be threatening with the touch; non-magical beings couldn't sense it in him. He had meant it as a human gesture, nothing more.

Making their way through the door, the crowd instinctively parted for the two, and he made his way toward the bar, sliding onto a stool.

Slates slid onto the stool next to Kai. "What're you drinking tonight, friend?" he asked, using the word loosely. He thought he could like Kai, if he made the effort. He was certainly not the monster he'd heard tell about. Well, he might be, underneath it all. Vampiers were as much a slave to the moon as weres, only in a different sense, and Slates knew well the monster could be tucked away and out of sight for a time.

"Whiskey, up, on ice," He directed that at the bartender who'd wandered over, giving him the furthest thing away from a 'smile' that could still be considered non-threatening.

"Scotch, on the rocks," Slates nodded to the bartender. His smile was nearly as feral.

"It's good of you to come out. i do hate drinking alone." Especially on this night.

Malakai nodded once, reaching in his pocket to pull out a tin of smokes. "I know the feeling," Opening it, he took a cig before offering it out, a small olive branch.

"Thanks." Slates took one of the joints. He looked it over before putting the blunt end in his mouth. He leaned forward, a little closer to Kai for the lighting of the joint. He inhaled deeply, eyes closing as he took it in.

Kai lit up himself, before sliding the tin and lighter back in his pocket. One elbow moved to rest on the bar, and he was content to take a drag from his smoke, waiting in silence for his drink. He wasn't going to ask questions- centuries had taught him better than that. If the shifter wanted to talk, he'd talk.

Slates wasn't so much interested in talking, as simply having the companionship of someone to drink with. He wasn't looking for friendship from Kai, though he thought it a possibility. He was just looking to pass the time, and no better way than with drinks and good smokes.

"Been here long?" he asked after a moment, looking up to Kai. He would have been content to sit in silence, but it seemed rude to invite the vampire to join him then effectively ignore him.

"Three months or so. It is..." He waved a hand, "Not noticible? After a while. A lot like the old world. Excepting the governments," He took a drink after that, not bothering to return the question; he didn't mind talking, but he didn't want the man- animal- to feel interrogated. At least not until he was much more drunk.

Slates nodded. he pulled a drag on his cigarette, and followed it with a drink. "I can do without the governments. And the others. I don't find any I know, other than you, the witch, the psychic, and the dhamphir." Odd, that. Almost like there ought to have been on representative from each of the species.

His brows furrowed, as he took another mouthful of smoke. "There's a psychic, here?" He hadn't seen one he recognized, which meant it probably wasn't a big deal. But better safe than dead, like always.

Slates nodded. He sipped his beer. So, he knew about the witch and the dhamphir. Slates wasn't surprised.

"I haven't spoken to any, but you." The pointed look said he'd stay away from Rurik and Ilya is Kai said the word. he wasn't inclined to cause trouble where the need be none. "The psychic keeps a low profile, aside from keeping a dinosaur as a pet. He doesn't advertise his gift."

"Dinosaur?" Kai looked obviously confused, before shaking himself back to the point. "I don't know the psychic, but the witch and the dhampir are of my family." Just the fact that a vampire would use the word 'family' said all Malakai intended to convey- if Slates decided to take on one, all three- and possibly more- would come after him.

slates nodded. "He keeps to himself." Slates had discovered him through intense research. "Name's Azriel Larkin. You might have heard of him. Or not," Slates shrugged. "I had dealing with him, before. Long time ago."

He looked down into his drink. "I have no interest in causing you or yours any trouble, Malakai. I'm just looking to understand a little more what's going on. My pack isn't here, I'm a little lost."

He clicked his tongue in recognition. "The bat with the bleeding heart. I know of him," He was a second-rate celebrity in their world, as much for his activism as his power. Kai found it trite, but had no real quarrel with him.

When the other bulked, Malakai sighed, nodding his understanding even though it wouldn't be seen. "I meant nothing by it. They're both plenty old enough, and plenty strong enough, to handle you themselves if they had to. The dhampir is my son, and the witch is my lover. Other than a Gula that has since died, we are the only ones from the old world I've known, here." A beat, "What I mean to say is, there is little going on, in any sense you need to worry about."

Slates nodded. "And between us? There is peaceful understanding, yes? I'd like to consider this a new start." Without his mother at his back, he felt for the first time that he was alive, and free to live his own life, make his own choices.

"You'll have no problem from me, unless you intentionally endanger others just for sport. There are still some here who hunt my kind, and yours, indiscriminately. No need to fuel their paranoia," Another puff of smoke later, he reached in his pocket, pulling out a flask to set next to the alcohol. He'd been thirsty, lately, considering he'd not fed since his little outburst. The sanguine would help keep him in control, in case Slates decided to ask after the hunters.

"I'm no animal, friend. There is a savage beast inside me, but he is not me but those three cursed nights each month." Slates sneered slightly at the words. He did not favor the truth of his nature.

"I'm currently seeking out a suitable retreat, when the time comes. I have no control over his primitive urges, but I have some measure of control over his location, when the moon calls him forth."

Malakai was silent for a long minute, before nodding just once. "That is fair. And I may have somewhere for you to go, during the moon, if you find nothing else. I help another, a wolf, for the nights." And here he was, sounding like a babysitter. He took another long drag from his cigarette.

Slates nodded. "I might take you up on that, though I am still looking." He didn't fancy the idea of being enclosed with a wolf. Wolves and Tigers typically did not get along, in his experience.

"Open offer. I'm used to playing head-of-house here. I seem unable to get away from it." His tone was sarcastic, as he took another drink of his alcohol, before unscrewing the sanguine to have a sip of that as well.

"I'll keep looking, on my own. Let you know, when it's closer to the moon." Slates nodded. He hated that weakness. He should just let himself go, but he really didn't want to end up dead, on account of the beast.

There was a non-committal noise as Kai let the silence hang, unsure what else he could really say to the other man. Other monster. He turned his attention to the television where some game or other was being played, willing to let the lights distract him for the time being.

Kai had to know even the notion of asking a vampire for help, especially one with his history, was difficult for Slates. But he didn't care to let his beast roam, when the time came. He'd sacrifice his dignity, to see that the tiger was penned up appropriately.
