Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:greg house, lisa cuddy

Who: House and Cuddy
Where: New York
When: Forwarded to Friday night
Why: They have a long talk they need to have
Rating: PG-13 at most for swearing. Wow. No sex.

There was still a pang of guilt running through him at how Cameron was angry with him for deserting her for Cuddy, but she had every right to be.  House, despite his normal chaotic behavior, felt extremely guilty for what he done and he couldn't turn it off.  Even if he was standing next to his bike at the portkey waiting to take Cuddy out on a date.  The last time he'd even been on a date was with Cameron.  But maybe Cuddy was right.  He might care for her and even love her, but did it mean they could even function in a relationship?  Both were so different here.  Cuddy was not the one he remembered, and maybe seeing that, really talking about that instead of demeaning her like always would make him realize things and figure out just what needed to be done.

She was going on a date. There was a part of her that felt kind of weird about it, not really because it was House but just in general. She had told herself that she was done with dating, and she'd kind of meant it. But he had looked ... upset for once. And Cuddy didn't like that at all. So she gave in and agreed to at least give it a try. There was no harm in that right? She'd told Mia and Jon where she was going and with whom and hoped that they would forgive her. Could she picture House as some sort of step father? No, not anymore then she could have pictured Bruce. After being a single parent for so long she felt like there was no way getting around that.

But for now, a date. She left the house and went down to the portkey and took it back to New York. Spotting Greg there already, she went over to him and smiled slightly. "Hi."

He knew this was bad. He saw Lisa smiling when she saw him and he felt like such an ass. Like he was about to do the worst thing in the world to her right now. The least he could do was not look like something was wrong when she got there, so as always, House hid what was going on in his head the second Cuddy got there and limped over to her. "Hey," and he smiled slightly. "I don't have a car so, hope you're bundled up tight for the ride. Can't have your most valuable assets freezing and falling off." He held out a helmet for her.

"Yeah sure," she glanced over at the bike and then back up at him. She knew the bike was their mode of transportation so at least she had dressed warmly. No skirt for her tonight. She took the helmet from him and put it on, feeling only slightly ridiculous as she waited for him to get on the bike and then got on behind him. Her arms wrapped around his waist to hold on. Well here went nothing, she supposed.

Putting his own helmet on, he climbed on the bike, and felt a small measure of relief with Cuddy's arms around his waist. He wondered if she'd forgive him for what he had to say to her tonight and not hate him. He drove off, heading toward a nice restaurant where he'd reserved a table for them, and keeping the insane driving for another night. It didn't take too long to get there, about twenty minutes, and House parked the bike, letting Cuddy get off first while he took off his helmet.

Almost glad for the silence, she was quiet the rest of the time as they headed towards the restaurant. The last time she'd been on the back of one of these seemed to be ages ago but she still remembered how to ride. Once they got there, she got off the bike and took off her helmet, trying to flatten her hair down as much as she could. She didn't know if helmet hair or wind blown hair was worse. She headed inside with him, still not sure what to say.

When he saw a bit of her hair sticking up, he couldn't help but smooth it down for her, letting his fingers trail down her hair to her shoulder. He only ventured a glance at her face then where a sad sort of smile ghosted his lips before he turned away and walked over to the waiter and told him they had a reservation. The waiter motioned for them to follow, and House walked right up behind Cuddy where he put his hand on the small of her back to urge her to go ahead of him. It didn't feel the same as when he touched Cameron, and his mind was going into overdrive now, trying to pick up the subtle nuances of how he felt when it came to different things with him and either Cam or Cuddy.

She smiled again when he brushed her hair down trying not to smirk at how he was acting. With his hand on her back, she followed the waiter over to a table and sat down in one of the chairs. She knew better then to think he was going to do something gentlemanly like pull out her chair. Touching her back was about as far as he went. Which was fine, because she didn't really mind at all. The waiter told them the specials and gave them menus and then wandered away so he could get their drink orders after they had a minute. "So have I missed anything terribly exciting over on this side of the pond?"

"Unless you count Thirteen turning into a soccer mom and getting together a group of kids to go trick or treating as exciting, then no," he said from behind his menu as he stared at it. "Next thing you know she's going to be throwing bake sales and heading up the local PTA..." Not that he could fault her for going on with her life, still he found it just a tad annoying to see her turn into that. He looked nervous now when he put the menu down.

Her shoulders shrugged a little, "It's not that bad. I'm sure I would have been the same way if my kids hadn't disappeared as babies and turned up as teenagers.." though she guessed he had a point. She could tell he was nervous, but she was too to some extent. When the waiter came back, she ordered a glass of wine and then ordered her food since she knew what she wanted to eat already.

House told the waiter to bring the entire bottle because he was sure he'd need it before the end of their dinner and ordered his food. Once the waiter was gone, House just sort of stared at her for a minute before the silence got to him and he blurted out, "I've slept with Cameron." Well. Nothing like ripping the band-aid off.

Huh. Well that was bracing. Cuddy just kind of stared at him for a moment and then finally nodded her head. "Um.. okay? You were.. free to do what you wanted.." she trailed off not sure why she was making excuses for him when in her eyes he didn't need any. "I'm not surprised.."

Then his brow creased as he cocked his head in that 'wtf' look. "You don't...care? At all? I slept with another woman after I said I loved you and that doesn't phase you?" God, she must have been more screwed up than he realized. Thankful the waiter soon brought the wine to them, House immediately started to drink his the second the guy finished pouring his. He waited until he left again before he spoke again. "I...might have said something to her. Something I said to you, and I'm not sure how this is going to pan out."

For a moment she didn't know how to respond to his accusation. "You were hurt and I never made some kind of claim on you. I mean, unless you're planning on screwing around behind my back, then we have a problem." She picked up her glass and started to drink. That actually made Cuddy blink a bit, and look quite confused. "You... told both of us .. I love you?" her head shook a little. "That's.. I think it's entirely possible the world might come to a stop.." she said half seriously. "So.. you... told me you loved me, then had sex with her. Then told her you loved her and then went with me anyway." She paused, "And I thought I was messed up."

"Yeah well," he nodded his head and lifted his glass to her then gulped down the rest of his wine. "Cameron...said it, and I haven't really figured out if it's her I love and am just displacing it on you or if it's you I love and I'm displacing on her." He set the glass down and poured it full of more wine as he shook his head.

At least he knew that there was something wrong about this picture. Half of her thought he'd just be like 'oh hey threesome' and that was it. "Don't look at me, I have no idea what goes on in that brain of yours. So I guess this is some sort of trial date for both of us?" She paused, "To be fair.. you and I haven't seen much of each other. And now she's.. resigned."

"I guess." But House didn't look surprised about the news about Cameron resigning. "Figures. She's heading to Jolly Ol' England now that I've broken her heart." At least, that's what he gathered from the recent post he saw Cameron make and the fact they'd gotten into it over the message board thing. "No, we haven't. I'm never much of a friend, which I hate to admit your daughter might be right about me."

Cuddy just nodded. Maybe she didn't blame Cameron, she kind of packed it up once Bruce disappeared too. Change was good for things like that. "She's right about a lot of things but I never wanted to be your friend, House. I don't know." she didn't know a lot about a lot of different things when it came to them.

"Then...what do you want from me? Do you want anything at all?" At this stage, they weren't even friends with the way Cuddy talked. This place had definitely changed them both and not for the better in his eyes. "You got me to thinking about what if this is a mistake? And that Cameron may be what I need."

"I.. don't know.." she admitted. "You were the one that came to me, not the other way around." she rubbed at her eyes a little. "It's not like I don't feel anything, I just... I'm so angry at everything. I don't want to be angry at you too when you haven't done anything wrong. That's not fair."

"But why are you so angry? Yeah, I get you got crewed over a lot, but eventually people let go of whatever and move on. Not like you to stay mad forever." He drank a little more wine then set the glass down, his fingers playing with the stem of the glass. "I'm not sure I can make anyone happy. Let alone be capable of happiness myself. I'm just mad at being here when I liked my world. No one's like they were. Well, Cameron kind of is, but Thirteen is the doting wife and mother and you've got kids and here I am...useless and alone."

"Because it was only a month ago... I opened myself up again and he left without saying anything but that he loved me. It's not like I've been sitting here being angry for years. It's not been that long, and he just showed up again looking all .. old and giving me grief because I was angry and he didn't even have the decency to say oh yeah I'm alive.." she ranted slightly, and sighed. "Sorry.. I just.. that's why I'm angry. I've got to have time to get over that."

She did look sorry though, "You're not useless House. She loves you. She's stayed by yourself this whole time. Has she seen anyone else? She doesn't come with baggage.. which is kind of sad that out of all of us it's her without the baggage but.. I'm sorry. I don't want you to be alone or unhappy, I never have."

"I didn't even know it'd been that recently. Here I thought it was just some deep hatred you've been letting stew." Which showed him how little he knew of Cuddy's life here. Aside from being with Superman and having his super spawn. "I don't think she has. She's always been there no matter what ridiculous thing I need or want. Yeah I am. I mean what the hell have I done since I've been here except annoy you?" He drank a little more wine as their food arrived where he just leaned back and took a deep breath. "Because she's obviously smarter than us."

Her head shook a little. "He.. disappeared um.. I don't know, August? He didn't explain to anyone where he was. And then made everyone think he'd died in a plane crash. Then a week ago he showed up without a word and hasn't even said hello." And she wasn't the only angry one, she knew that. "Clark.. disappearing was ages ago and not his fault." But anyway, "You haven't.. well no you have annoyed me but in a way I don't seem to mind too much." When their food arrived, she started to eat, "It seems like it yeah. Well.. this time around anyway. When she was here before it was... bad."

"Good, I can keep a standing appointment to annoy you at least once a week. Wouldn't want you to forget I'm here," though there was a slight tick of a smile at the corner of his mouth then. He'd just started to dig into his meal when Cuddy brought up there'd been a bad side to Cameron's previous visit to this place. He didn't know she'd been here before. "What do you mean...bad? How bad is bad?"

Cuddy smirked, "I wouldn't want you to. It wouldn't be fun if you didn't constantly make medical decisions that make me want to tear my hair out." Which was the truth. Though about Cameron she looked a bit more serious. "You have to absolutely promise me that you're not going to bring it up because she would have no idea what you're talking about and.. you and Wilson .. were sort of with her way long ago on that island where I met Clark. Then when we got here, she was kind of.. pushed aside. It happens. But then her... husband showed up. Her.. dead husband. She was fine for a while.. but someone was cruel and decided to make him sick again. She just didn't handle it well."

Christ that was putting it mildly.

He was glad that Cuddy didn't hate him, and glad that they kind of figured out this whole thing before something bad happened. "I won't say a word. I'm not that cruel. Well, maybe I am but...I can't do it to Cameron." Maybe he was sickeningly in love with her. And now he had to stop her from leaving New York. "You mean she did something really bad and stupid to either someone or herself." House kind of got the impression it was the latter from the way Cuddy looked. He took a deep breath. "Guess I better stop her from running off to London."

Thank goodness for small favors. Slowly she nodded her head. "It wasn't just that.. I mean she watched him die again. And.. there was some other thing I can't think of.. oh.. Dr. Cox.. that was before her husband I think. Anyway.. she kind of just shut down. Like she went catatonic.. and then she ... jumped off the roof.." she said quietly. "I never ever ever want to see her like that ever again. It was.. scary. And I don't scare easy." Well not too easy anyway. "Maybe that's.. for the best. I'm not going anywhere.. and I'm certainly not upset or angry at you."

Not that he'd had a large appetite to begin with, knowing that Cameron killed herself after all of that...well, he didn't have any appetite left really. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the small bottle of Vicodin and popped a pill, swallowing it down with a little wine before depositing the bottle back in his pocket. "I won't let that happen again. I'm not going anywhere and I doubt I'm gonna die of cancer."

Cuddy just snorted a bit. "I won't touch your precious motorcycle.." she placated. "It's a good thing I'm on the pill because I think we'd all be extremely fucked over if I turned up knocked up wouldn't we?" she said almost cheerfully. "Yeah, I don't want your kids dropping my ass off the Empire State Building for that," he said, sipping a little more wine then deciding that maybe he was hungry after all. Just as he was stuffing a bite into his mouth, he stopped mid-chew. "While riding bareback can be fun...what do you mean by 'something else'?" he asked as he marked the words with quotes in the air. He wasn't even sure Cameron was on the pill or what. He always knew they went through a lot of condoms, enough that maybe he should consider stock in Trojan.

It's an animal thing to want to...impregnate half the herd. Mark's...not my kid. Maybe genetically but I didn't raise him, and I never intend to." He knew his dad wasn't even his real dad, so he wasn't afraid of treating his kid like that, though House was screwed up and he wasn't sure how he'd act with a baby.
