Who: Steve and Psyche
What: Walking on the beach
Where: Ocean Beach, San Diego, CA
When: Saturday evening

It was a slightly chilly night but that didn't keep Steve from wearing knee-length shorts on the beach. He was barefoot, with only a San Diego State sweatshirt on to keep him warm (an intern had purchased it for him, after she'd seen him looking cold in the office). Obviously the man was troubled as he walked through the moonlit sand, eyes shifting from the ground at his feet to the glittering ocean. Some nights he just couldn't fall asleep due to the fact he couldn't stop thinking. Maybe it was a silly thing to suffer from but it was what he had to deal with.

In his mind he kept seeing Tony, the few moments he remembered before he died. He could see his friends - his fellow super heroes - being hurt, apprehended and made into the villains. It seemed almost worse than what Hitler had done to the Jews in his time. Almost. All the memories kept him from sleeping so he took a port key to San Diego, Ocean Beach specifically, since he found the ocean soothing. Calming.

He took out his cell phone and left a message on the boards for Psyche, a faint smile crossing his lips when she said she'd be there. Pausing in his walk he turned toward the ocean and stared out at it's glistening waters, thoughtful.

Psyche appeared a few feet away from Steve in a white breezy dress. She was silent for a moment, just observing him.

He seemed troubled, tired with a lot on his mind. She hoped he'd talk to her about it. She was always willing to listen.

"Steve?"

"Psyche." Steve turned to the young woman, his eyes seeming to light up. What? She was gorgeous in the moonlight, standing there in that gorgeous and perfect white dress. Sue him, he was finding himself rather fond of her. Even if she was a goddess, which he still had trouble wrapping his mind around.

Closing the distance between them he leaned in to kiss her softly on the cheek.

"How are you?"

She smiled up at him as he kiss her cheek.

"I'm fine. How about you?" Her hand reached up and traced the lines of worry on his forehead. "It's pretty late for a mortal to be taking walks on the beach."

He couldn't help but close his eyes under the gentle touch. Oh what he'd give to just lay with his head in her lap and let her rub away the worry.

"I couldn't sleep." Steve admitted softly, still remaining close to Psyche, not wanting to move out of her personal space. "Can't stop thinking; remembering. You know?"

"Ah. Yes, I do know." Her hand drifted away from his face, and smoothed down the front of his shirt, laying directly over his heart. Psyche could, if she wanted, look into his past - know everything he couldn't stop thinking about in a heartbeat - but she chose not to. She was not in the habit of looking into another's past without permission.

"I've had nights like that. Do you want to talk about it?"

"I wouldn't mind it, actually. If you don't mind being troubled with my issues." Perhaps if he spoke out loud about what he was thinking then he'd be able to relax. To get over everything and finally head home to sleep. "We can walk and talk, if you want. It's a nice night, even if it is a bit chilly."

"Of course, I don't mind - it won't be a trouble - and walking along the beach is an excellent idea. It's beautiful out tonight."

She moved to his side and took his hand in hers. Threading her fingers between his.

Steve had always liked hand holding.

He squeezed Psyche's hand as they started walking. Looking up at the sky as they walked along - trusting Psyche enough to not let him get hurt - he sighed.

"Where I was from there was a war of sorts. Super hero against super hero. Friends against friends."

Psyche nodded as she walked along beside him.

"A civil war."

"Yeah. Before I joined the avengers, though, when I first became Captain America I fought in World War II. I still have nightmares about that but they tapered off after I was thawed out and working with the avengers." He sighed. "But then the civil war happened and I had to fight against Tony and the people I'd worked with..."

Steve glanced at Psyche.

"I'm rambling but...I've been having nightmares and they trouble me."

"Wait...thawed out? And no, you're not rambling. I want to know about you."

She was beginning to wonder if it wouldn't have been easier simply to read his past. But no, she wanted to hear it from him.

"Well, when I died in World War two I fell into the Atlantic wherein I became frozen in a block of ice. S.H.I.E.L.D got me out of the ocean and un-thawed me all these years later to use me for the Avengers." Steve explained.

"Oh. Wow." She looked down and was silent for a bit, digesting that. When she looked back up, she was smiling, but her eyes were still full of questions. "You've had a pretty eventful life, haven't you? And Tony is the friend that talked to me right? You fought him?"

"I guess. Really I just wanted...to fight for my country. Everything else that happened was a mistake. A fluke and yes, Tony is...my friend. He was my best friend. Is my best friend I guess. It's just awkward now between us because...well, he let me die." Steve frowned faintly.

"That, and he's moved on with his life. He's got Pepper, and a baby coming and no room for me anymore."

"He let you die?" Psyche stopped walking and turned to look at Steve. She cupped his cheek with her palm. "You're not alone, Steve. Don't ever think that."

"He didn't...want it to happen. It just sort of did and he didn't stop it in time." Obviously Steve was only a bit sore about it and had, for the most part, forgiven Steve. However when Psyche cupped his cheek he closed his eyes and leaned into the touch.

"I feel like it sometimes."
