Entry tags:skadi skwigelf, soren skwigelf

Who: Skadi and Soren Skwigelf.
What: Sibling reunions!
Where: Her flat in Stockholm.
When: Tonight, shortly after her arrival.
Warnings: Swearing, maybe, but other than that, they're siblings. Fluffysquee!

Soren barely got out the words to tell Cass and Henn where he was going before he was barreling out the door and running for the portkey. The trip to Stockholm was easy enough, and he found himself running to his sister's flat. He was grinning the whole way, all but bouncing. He was rocking on his heels when he knocked on the door, practically vibrating with glee.

She had left the door unlocked, since she was bouncing right back out again. She'd given herself the tour of the house she inherited and realized that it could have been a much, much worse switch. She did a little research by way of deductive reasoning and realized that she replaced another photographer. That made her happy, as did the zillion rolls of unused film and boxes upon boxes of unused polaroids. She heard the knock on her door, spinning around and dashing through the apartment, she flung the door open and practically tackled her big brother.

"You don't know how worried I was, I was afraid you were kidnapped or killed or lost in the woods with Cassidy or eaten by wolves or got trapped somewhere! I'm so glad you're safe!" She squeezed him tight before her eyes widened and went damp. "Never ever ever EVER do that again!"

She tugged him into the apartment, which was very much like many Swedish flats - all (re)built and partially decorated in the early 70s, so the walls were white, the windows were wide and tall, and the partition wall between the kitchen and living room had oblong bars with circles cut into them. The furniture somewhat matched in its Ikea-laden Swedish Modern style, and Skadi, in her bright yellow fall coat with orange hat, stood out in the colorless room.

The door opened and he was tackled before he could speak. He chuckled when he heard her and shook his head. "I promise that I wasn't kidnapped, Cass is still fully intact, and we're not trapped. We're fine. I wish I could've told you or something, sent word. But you know how vortexing is." He sighed a little and rubbed her back as she pulled him into her apartment. He looked around with approval, having always liked Swedish interior design.

"Hey, I like your place," he grinned. He picked her up and spun her around a little. "Did you find out who you replaced?" He patted her on the head, displacing her hat slightly.

She tugged her hat straight again with a smile and a nod, "Another photographer, there's a dark room made out of a walk in closet in my bedroom. And four new cameras to play with." She bounced slightly on her heels, "Okay, it's been months for me since I saw you last. You probably should start your story now, so you might be able to finish by my bedtime." She looked over her own camera, still hanging from her neck. She had to make sure it was still in working order before she snapped a picture of her big brother and his smiling face, before he had time to react.

The sound of the shutter releasing made him laugh harder. "I missed that, you know. I always think of you when I hear cameras clicking. Can't help it." His stomach rumbled a little and he wandered toward the kitchen to raid the fridge, returning with a couple of menus. "Let's get something to eat while I talk." Handing them over to her with his cell phone, he flopped down on the couch and ran his fingers through his hair. "You just want me to start at the beginning?"

"It's always about food with you, Soren." Scolded Skadi, in the sweetest way possible. She sat down, pulling her legs under her as she looked over the menus, deciding on the one that had a duck dish.

"No, start from the ending and work your way backwards." She deadpanned before rolling her eyes.

"Well, yeah, obviously." He poked at his stomach, sighing at its roundness. Granted, it wasn't really, but he tended to be vaguely insecure about it around all of the incredibly slender people he knew.

Stretching out a little, he toed off his boots. "Well. Cass got here first. I got here maybe - twenty minutes later?" That made him laugh, and he curled up next to his sister. "For a while we just sort of hung out. And um. Eventually we started..." His voice trailed off, his blush betraying what he felt really awkard about telling his sister. "You know."

"Making out like usual?" She asked, handing over the menu of her choice so he could look it over, and that was when she realized he was more embarrassed to tell her than he would be if it was simply that. She blinked a couple times and furrowed her brow. "Actually, I don't know."

Soren looked down at his hands, which he'd clasped together. "I love him, Skadi. Probably always have. And not like.... not like how I love you." He worried at his lower lip, sighing. "I don't know where I'd be without him. He's... " He shook his head and sighed. "We live together now. Bill and Jack gave us this house, and we just figured things out. Which is weird, because we both have girlfriends too, but they're okay with it?"

He realized belatedly he was rambling, and had moved to curl up into a compact ball-thing.

She blinked.

And blinked again.

And then, Skadi laughed. She clapped her hands together and squealed delightedly, "Oh, I knew it! Ever since you two started making out to get girls, I totally knew! It's like a fairytale come true! It's so romantic, Soren!" She bounced up and sat down right next to him to wrap her arms around him as best she could. "Oh, how sweet that you two finally fell in love. Cassidy is such a nice guy, and he keeps you smiling all the time, and you keep him happy, too!"

She paused then, and blinked some more, "Did you say you two have girlfriends too? At the same time? As in, more than one?"

He wasn't expecting that exact reaction, but when she laughed he had to as well. "I love that everyone that's ever met us ever says that." He hugged her in return, leaving his arms wrapped around her and left them there. "I really think he's my yang and I'm his yin." He twirled the ends of his hair when she paused and gently nibbled on the ends.

"Yeah. You remember Henn, right? She and Cass just got engaged, actually. And um. Remember Miss Sable, the book lady?" He was very, very red.

She thought about it, and shook her head, "I only vaguely remember Henriette, she's the one with the weird eyes, right?" She shrugged, "And... oh, please don't tell me. You're dating Miss Harris? You're dating Miniver's daughter?? So', you... She's... That's totally unfair!" But it did give her ideas. "So that's why Miniver was being all weird on the boards. How does pappa feel about it?"

She took Soren's hair out of his mouth and tucked it back behind his ear, "You'll get split ends."

"Henn's got her mother's eyes, yeah. And they're not weird, they're pretty." He tickled her a little before biting his lip and blushing harder. "How's that unfair? And Uncle Miniver's always weird. You know that. And Dad? He's... he's really happy about it."

When she tucked his hair behind his ear, he smiled and kissed her on the cheek. "What would I do without you?" Hugging her tighter, he rest his chin on the top of her head. "And technically, I'm not just dating Sable. We're engaged. She's only nineteen here." He knew he was dropping lots of bombs, but they needed to be dropped.

She curled up closer to him and put her hand on his, amazed still that their hands were so disproportionately sized for being siblings. His hands were large and long, and hers had long fingers, but were small, just like the rest of her. "You've been really busy. I'm really happy for you. I am." She murmured. "You're in love with her..." she blinked as she moved her hand into his, seeing the tattoo. "That's new, too. Soren, I'm..." She didn't even have words to describe how she felt about it all. She was worried that there was much more that he wasn't telling her, that he'd grown so far away and beyond what she knew that she wouldn't be able to recognize him anymore after a while.
But mostly, she was happy for him.

He wiggled his fingers, demonstrating just how big his hands were compared to hers before threading them through hers. "I am. And I know it's a lot, and I'm sorry. I wish you'd been here for all of it." He rolled up the sleeve on his left wrist to show her the tattoo. She'd been around when he'd given himself the scars - not in the room, but she'd known the aftermath - and she knew that he hated what he'd done. The fact that he was exposing his wrist more wouldn't have been lost on her.

"You have to tell me what you've been up to," he smiled, pushing his sleeve back down. "How long was I gone where you were? Really, if you worried, I'm sorry."

She put her hand near the new tattoo, smiling sweetly, "It's like pappa's lilies." Skadi smiled slightly and wistfully, remembering quite well the reason behind the scar that the tattoo covered. "She's growing a garden in salted earth. Miraculous." She whispered to herself, before looking up at Soren's question. "Usual things. I'm never as adventurous as you. I took pictures of Central Park last week, and a month ago, I was in Moscow. It's been..." She counted back in her mind and sighed, "Three and a half months." She tugged his hair slightly before curling closer, pouting. "Pappa keeps asking when I'm going to find a boyfriend at all. He thinks I'm broken."

"Dad's... if he brings it up again, and I doubt he will here because I'm still in Mom - I'll remind him what happens when people date the wrong person. Don't you ever date someone just to pass the time, or just to feel normal. You date someone who makes your heart sing."

"Your big brother's pretty smart, huh?" He grinned and slouched a little to hug her more effectively. "And we're not going to get married until we're older. I'm only twenty, she's only nineteen - we're not ready yet. And I'll always take you dancing, Skadi. You're my sister. Just because I'm going to marry Sable someday, just because I live with Cass and Henn, I'm always your big brother. Period. And don't worry - Sable's like Uncle Min. Even after we get married, she's going to live wherever she wants."

That got a big smile out of Skadi and she squeezed him. "You'd better hold to that or I'll bite you. And you know I don't fuck around when I bite." She kissed his temple again before raising a brow. "Yes I know you don't! I swear you've given me rabies like, twelve times at least." He chuckled when she asked if there was food at their place, standing with his arms wrapped around her, picking her up. "Aunt Brenda sends over enough food all on her own, much less what Cass makes. And hey! We have a dog, you have to come meet him." He set her down long enough to hunch over so she could climb onto his back.

She climbed up and wrapped around him, securing her camera at her waist. "Somehow, I don't think the two of you taking care of a small animal is the best idea in the world." She chided, kissing her brother's cheek and deadpanning, "With bad influences like you two, heavens. That poor little thing must be straight on the track of utter chaos!" She smiled sweetly, "So', you know, I never did get to tell you that I think the one thing I missed about having you around the most was taking the pictures of you and Cassidy talking. He's so animated, and you follow suit when he's around. Your smiles are more sincere around him."

He bounced her experimentally to see if she'd fall off. When she didn't, he grinned. "Hey, Dog's a good dog. Maybe the tiniest bit neurotic, but he's small. All small things are." He grinned wryly even though she couldn't see it and started out the door, ducking so that he wouldn't hit her head on the frame. Her words about him and Cass made him smile and duck his head. He offered her a shrug that moved her slightly. "I love him. He makes me lighter." He held out his hand for her keys so he could lock the door, handing them back once it was done.

Then he was off, tromping through the streets with her on his back toward the portkey. The nearest one was an abandoned boot, and he tapped it with his own toe with her still on his back. It was surreal, going from the crowded streets of Stockholm to the sandy beach in front of his house, but he grinned nonetheless. "Here we are," he laughed, bouncing her a bit more.

Her expression was one of the utmost seriousness as they bounced through the streets of Stockholm, as if Everyone's lives depended on her being on Soren's back right then. They got a few stares. But her expression shifted to one of awe once they were surrounded by ocean and blue skies, palm trees, scrub brush, sand, and the completely glass-walled first floor of Soren's home. She slid off his back, utterly speechless, unsure of what to shoot first. It was all so beautiful.

It was also very warm. She unbuttoned her jacket and slung it over her arm, revealing a spaghetti-strap top and a short blue skirt over diamond patchwork tights and kneehigh boots. "Oh, Soren," she cooed, "this is so beautiful!" She started up the front steps as if being led into the house on a string. She looked around, gasping again when she saw the cliff at the back of the house, overlooking the crashing waves of the ocean.

He didn't say anything and just watched her explore. He wondered what she'd shoot first himself, and he flopped down on the floor and tossed his head back to yell. "DOG! CASS! I'M HOOOME!" He grinned when he heard the sound of tiny dog feet skidding on hardwood floors to run toward him, catching the tiny black and white bundle as it jumped into his lap. Watching Skadi made him smile, and he stood up with Dog cradled into his chest.

"Bill and Jack... we owe them a lot. This house is really home for me now in a lot of ways. Don't get me wrong - I still go see Mom and Dad a lot, and I go to Mordhaus sometimes, but I really love it here. Wait until you see the freshwater pool. That's my favorite place here after the reading nook."

"Mm." Was all Skadi had to say. She finally found something that she wanted to take a picture of, and was setting up for it. She had set down her jacket and had dragged a table over to use as a tripod, and started getting the angle just right. It was only a few seconds more before she pressed the button on her camera and smiled. The lighting was just right, the sun coming through the slats of the upstairs patio's deck, and a vine plant that Cassidy had bought looked like it was reaching out to get into a beam of sunlight. Through the window of the living room, it looked almost surreal, like one was detached from the scene, simply observing, not disturbing the plant's quest.

She smiled and set the table back exactly as it had been, feet at ninety degree angles with the walls. "I can see why you'd find this to be home. It's alive, it's beautiful." She looked around and then fixed her eyes on the bug-eyed canine in Soren's arms. "And that is the single most goofy looking creature I've ever met in person. The dog's weird looking, too."

He watched her take her photo, awed that she saw the world the way she did. Her photographer's brain was different from his writer's brain, was different from their father's solely musical brain. Even if Soren could play music (sometimes well) he wasn't his father and couldn't see the world through an instrument. He saw things in words, took comfort in their static arrangements. Skadi created worlds through subtle manipulation of what the person seeing the photo saw, and Soren found that to be a powerful and beautiful thing.

When she teased him, he scrunched up his face into an even goofier expression before relaxing his facial muscles. Dog's adorable and you know it."

She was likewise astonished by Soren's writing - Skadi would spend hours on end, reading and re-reading the stories he'd written, amazed by how he could manipulate the words into a magical place in someone's mind - and yet, she could never do the same, though she was well spoken and equally well-written.

Scratching Dog behind his ears, she nodded. "Oh, he's just very unique looking. Does he have vision problems, with his eyes out and pointed different directions like that?" She kissed the dog's forehead before taking a seat on the couch, once again folding her legs under her.

"Nope! He's just fine according to the vet." He sat back down next to her on the couch, bringing Dog along to sit on his lap. "I don't know, I guess they're just made that way. Another one of God's little jokes, like the platypus." He smiled when Dog didn't really even get hyper over the new arrival, simply panting a doggy smile and sticking out his tongue.

"Could ask Her." She said with a slight shrug, sprawling her arms across the back of the couch, laying her head between them. "Soren, you got engaged before I ever even dated someone and you're only eleven months older than me. That's entirely unfair, and I won't stand for it."

He set Dog next to him on the couch and scooted over so that he could set Skadi's head on his lap. "I'm sorry, Skadi. But I can't really take it back, you know? You'll find someone, promise. "I was joking, you fish lipped fool." She said, swatting his knee, but she nevertheless curled up happily. "You know I couldn't be happier for you. I love that you found someone. Two, in fact. But you really didn't have to look too far for Cassidy. What made you realize it, finally? I told you it was when you two started kissing each other, but that's not exactly right. It was when... When you and Amanda broke up that I really started to see it. He came over and yelled at you and I don't think I've ever seen him so angry before. But he wasn't angry at you, not at all." She had her satchel bag along with her, so she reached for it and pulled it over, pulling the photo album out. She flipped through the pages and pulled out a picture, offering it to him.
The date on the back read the day after Soren had cut his wrist. On the photo, it was a picture of a younger, lighter haired Cassidy, leaning against one of the beams outside of his first apartment, smoking a cigarette and looking out towards the street with a scowl. But the way the light hit his face, it reflected the wetness on his cheeks and brought out the red in his eyes.

"I took that and I realized that he wasn't angry at you, he was scared."

"My lips aren't - hey!" Soren pouted out his lower lip even as he chuckled, which was a talent that he'd had to practice since he was a kid. "I am lucky," he agreed. But then he listened hard to what she said. He hated thinking about Amanda at all, and at first itched to change the subject. But then she was rifling through her bag and he took the picture she handed him. He looked at it for a full minute, his eyes brimming with tears that spilled onto his cheeks when he blinked.

"I think," he started, swallowing hard, "that it was being brought here. We both knew what would've happened if we'd been brought here without the other." Soren wiped his eyes with the back of a hand, chuckling. "Until we got here, I think we just took that for granted. I think we were hung up on trying to make it what it wasn't."

"You make each other alive. It's not that you'd die without each other, it's that you aren't really alive when you're apart. I think that's what it is." She snagged the picture back and offered him another, from the same page, only about two weeks later. It was happier by far, a lighter atmosphere and a brighter lighting, with more green and yellow in it. It was of the coffee shop that Cassidy and Soren always went to, and it was a warm day. Cassidy was sitting apart from Soren as always, but even in the picture itself, there were subtle cues of reaching out. "He's really bad at hiding how he feels, even when he's hiding from himself." She noted. "You are too, look at how you're holding your hand a bit closer than naturally comfortable, just to be closer to him."

"That's... that's exactly it." He didn't say anything about the fact that they'd almost arranged it (in the stupidest way possible) so they never would have to die without each other, but he figured it would be better to leave out that piece of information. Besides, they had Healerlady. It was a great comfort to Soren to know the longest he'd ever be without Cass was two weeks. Sure, they'd be the hardest two weeks of his life, but he could endure.

The picture was the best summation of their teenage friendship that he could think of, and it made him smile. "It's weird. It's like I always knew, but didn't want to know? Especially with Ama - " He stopped himself from saying her name, squeezing his palms. He remembered what Skadi had done for him after that ordeal, and he'd never forget it. It was one of the sweetest things anyone had ever done for him. "Especially when I was in love with the soul sucking harpy. I thought that she was it. I thought I'd found the girl I was gonna be with forever. So I didn't think that Cass was anything but my best friend."

He looked closer at the picture, careful not to touch its glossy face, a fond smile creeping over his features. "You'll probably like taking pictures of us now." Rolling up his sleeve again, he ran his fingers over the C hidden in his tattoo.

"I always have, Soren." She said, taking the picture back and setting the album in its entirety on his lap, curling up against his side. "Ever since I was little, my favorite subjects were you two, and dad. It's like you three can't really turn off. Mom's amazing when she's casting, or when she's dancing. But I love snapping you and Cassidy because it's always subtle, even when you don't think it is. You both are so expressive, most of the time you don't even realize it." She flipped a couple pages in her album, and there was a picture of their father.

It would be fairly innocent looking at first glance - Skwisgaar playing his guitar - but if anyone had noticed any of her other photos of him, his hands were always in motion, always just slightly blurred. In this photo, they were still, on the strings, with him looking up through his hair at something off to the side of the camera's view. But it was obvious from the shadow who it was, with curves like that. Their mother was dancing off to the side, and on the old man's face was just the hint of a smile.

She smiled sweetly, "You get it from dad. You don't know how easy to read you really are."

He wrapped an arm around her and squeezed gently. "Maybe I got it from Dad. I know why Mom turns things off - I think it's probably just habit." He shivered a little, remembering the ghost stories that she'd told him at bedtime, except from her, they were all true anecdotes from her life. It was half the reason he'd wanted to learn magic, a little boy's desire to keep his mother and baby sister and father safe.

He blinked a few times at the picture of Skwisgaar, then he shook his head and smiled. For most people, they wouldn't have gotten it. For their family, it was a Valentine's card, a visual representation of what so many people didn't seem to get. It made his heart feel very full and warm to have his whole family there, and he sighed. He kissed her on the forehead, then jumped slightly at the sound of Dog snoring.

"C'mon," he grinned. "I want to show you the freshwater pool. It's gorgeous at night - and someday, if you figure out how to get a camera underwater, I'll take you to the caves."

"They make submersible cameras, So'." She said as she stood, smiling as she set the album aside, perfectly straight on the table out of respect for Cassidy's Straight Lines thing. She took her camera back up and held Soren's arm, looking up at him as he towered over her. "You really got your act together, it seems. Have you written much since you got here?
