Apocalypse Never!
Who: Apocalypse and Superman and NPC's
What: Battle and Endgame
Where: New York City, then the Atlantic Ocean
When: Monday Evening
Warnings: None really, save for superhero violence
The men were trying to move the rubble and uncover the tunnels when a blast shook the building, and one ran to look outside.
"Oh, shit! He's back!! Apocalypse is here!"
The men cursed and fled the building, even as it tumbled down and the call went out. Apocalypse was attacking New York City again.
***
Superman had been working for three days on the Phantom Zone Projector, inbetween fighting fires, saving lives, and briefing Lois on what was going on. He had not slept since his arrival, and he wasn't sure when he would be able to now. All he knew was it was finally finished, and he had a chance, if he could get close enough to use it.
He was flying high above the Indian Ocean when he heard the screams.
He darted downward toward a boat where a young girl was screaming at a satellite television transmitting scenes from New York.
"Oh God, my dad is there! He is going to die!"
Superman watched the scene for a moment then nodded.
"Don't worry. I will help."
She gaped up at him for a moment, which was all the time she had for the next moment, the whole area was rocked with booms as Superman sped upward at Mach velocities. It was time.
***
Apocalypse was tearing his way through the dock area when there was a blur, and a resounding boom.
"Stop now! Cease, or I will end this."
Superman, being him, had to give one more warning, one more chance at peace. His plea was answered with a beam of pure force that shot him into the air and out of sight. There were screams below as Apocalypse demolished a building, turning back to his work.
"Then you give me no choice."
There was a blur, an even louder boom, and then Apocalypse was flying, punched up, and away from the city, and toward the ocean. Superman looked down at the people below.
"Hang on folks, help is on the way. The city's services are rushing here right now."
And then he was gone, racing after Apocalypse. TV copters in the sky swerved, then followed, trailing behind to watch this combat.
***
High above the Ocean, Apocalypse's jets came online.
"FOOL! YOU WILL FALL BEFORE THE MIGHT OF APOCALYPSE! SOON, MY NEW AGE WILL DAWN! AND NOTHING WILL STAND IN MY WAY!!"
Beams of coruscating energy reached out for Superman and he dodged them, then pounded Apocalypse with his heat vision, flicking the switch on the harness he wore to fire up the phantom zone projector. He just had to hold a few minutes.
"Tin plate tyrants like yourself will say it time and again and I will tell you what I have told them, what they have learned from me and from others down through history. No matter how hard you try, no matter how many times you come back, humanity will not fall, will not falter, will not back down, and will not be enslaved. Against the darkness, we will stand, and triumph!"
And he threw himself forward, to meet Apocalypse.
The blows they exchanged made vortexes of wind, and water, and sent waves hurling high in the air, and the copters filing the event had to pull back farther, as they beamed the entire scene all over the world.
Blow after blow was thrown, and no quarter given. Superman had to hold him, and no matter how much it hurt, he would!

"It's incredible! This battle is like two old gods out of legend, battling it out on some ancient battleground, and yet, here we are, witness to it all. From this close, we can feel each blow as if it was sent our way. Whoever this strangely costumed man is, he is giving as good as he is getting."
"Bruce, reports are coming in calling him Superman, an he has apparently been seen all over the globe alongside other heroes fighting against the effects of this crisis."
"Superman, eh? Well, he just might have to live up to that title today, if this doesn't stop soon."
***
Superman could hear them, even as he battled Apocalypse. He felt himself getting battered and growled as he delivered another blow.
Apocalypse was strong, and this armor he wore must somehow enhance him.
Finally, he heard a ding and knew the projector was ready. He flicked a switch and slammed into Apocalypse, grabbing the being by his chest armor and shooting them both up into the air as the field of the phantom zone formed around Apocalypse. They fought still, even as the zone started to roil around him and pull the madman toward it.
Apocalypse started his thrusters and tried to pull away from it, and for a moment, Superman was afraid he would succeed.
But then the pull of the zone slowly pulled the madman back toward the event horizon.
As he was pulled into it, he roared and fired a beam.
"I WILL HAVE MY REVENGE! APOCALYPSE WILL RETURN!"
Superman started to dodge the beam but could not while still projecting the field.
***
"And he has done it! The madman is being pulled in!! Superman has defeated Apocalypse!"
"Wait! What is--"
From the reporter's point of view, it was a shock, and a last minute one, that made his heart jump in his breast. The beam reached out from Apocalypse's hands, and Superman screamed as it hit. And then he fell, and the ocean swallowed him up, even as Apocalypse vanished.
"Oh my god! Superman is down in the water! Repeat! Superman is down in the water! He stopped Apocalypse, but Superman is... he is gone!"
