Who: Artan, Cassidy and Soren (possible threadcrashing by Henn, who knows.)
What: Tattoos!
Where: Artan's shop, New Orleans
When: Tonightishtime
Warnings: Needles, swearing

Artan hadn't had much time to spend with his future daughter's boyfriend, nor did he particularly feel like it was his right to. After all, he knew Henn was a strong, sweet lady who took after himself a little bit. When he got a call from Cassidy, asking for some work done on a couple people, one of which being himself, he obliged, because hey, work that he liked.

Cassidy had known where Artan's shop was for quite a while, and led Soren there. It was a nice, clean store just outside of the part of town that tourists would usually tread. Right as they entered the door, there was a good jag of classic rock playing, Led Zepplin's Houses of the Holy was apparently being played.

Artan was a shorter man, much shorter than what Cassidy had remembered him being, at first, but it was starting to become normal for him. "Artan, this is Soren Skwigelf. Soren, this is Henn's future dad, Artan Stillman. I think Artan said he worked on your dad and mom's art, too."

Artan offered his hand to the tallest male, grinning, "And you look a hell of a lot like them both. You got your mom's face and your dad's everything else. So, what are you two in for tonight? Did you bring me a design, or do you need me to help you make one?"

Soren was actually sort of sheepish as he shook Artan's hand. "Yeah, everyone says that. I could've done a lot worse, though, you know?" He blinked, seeing quite a bit of Henn in Artan too, but not wanting to point it out. Time pretzels treated everyone differently, and Mr. Stillman might not have wanted his future daughter pointed out to him.

He leaned slightly on Cass and scratched the back of his neck. "We've got a rough idea of the one we want that's sort of in common - and I know I want one and I have a rough idea, but I can't draw at all. That one I'll need help with."

Cassidy smiled slightly and squeezed Soren's arm, "It's this big doofus' first time under the needle. I promised him that you'll be gentle." He smirked and slid into a seat while Artan got them both beers.

Artan passed the beers to the boys and opened his own with the bottom of his lighter before taking a seat with them, all of them around a small table that had a sketchpad and a pencil already waiting. "Great. Okay so, lay it on me. First off, how big are you wanting this piece?" He gestured with his hands on the paper, approximately the size of a half dollar, then started spreading bigger, "Small, large, ginormous?" He turned to Soren, one brow raised.

He took a swig of beer before setting the bottle down and easing off the wristband on his left hand. A thin line of scar tissue ran from where his wrist started, running the length of his index finger down his arm. "Big enough to cover that," he murmured, reaching out to drink his beer again. He looked at Cass and reached out to squeeze his hand.

Soren was already nervous. He didn't like his scars - he hated them, to tell the truth - but they were part of him he was used to. He was used to hiding them under various accessories. But this? This was celebrating them. This was admitting that Cass and Sable had fixed him in ways he'd only dreamt possible, had recreated him. He breathed deep and dramk more beer, nervous, but set in his course.

Cassidy squeezed Soren's hand back and Artan simply smiled. He knew the complicated relationship love-square that Henn had fallen into and he actually rather admired it. They were all good people, as far as he could tell.

Cassidy had his gloves off as well, and laced his fingers with Soren's. "It's okay Soren. I figure he's seen worse."

"Hell, I've done worse." Artan said with a chuckle. "I'm not here to judge, I'm here to ink. So, what's the design idea?" He got one more good look at the approximate length of the scar before sketching out a rough box shape on the paper where the design would be.

If a tomato could have seen Soren, it immediately would have gotten a complex about the redness of its complexion. "Forget-me-nots," he murmured. "I have a picture of them if you need it." He reached back for his wallet with his free hand, pulling out a picture he'd torn out of a magazine. The bright blue flowers almost looked star shaped, and he smiled just seeing them.

He lifted one of Cass' hands to his lips, kissing the knuckle and smiling at him. "You're still sure?"

It was an agreed-upon thing. Not only did they symbolize Soren's love for Sable, they also symbolized Sable herself. He nodded at that, "Yeah, I'm sure. Mine's going to be different, Artan, okay? His is simple."

Artan nodded and took the picture, setting it beside the box, eying the general build of the flowers and then started a sketch of them, a quick little thing that didn't start coming into its own until he brought out the colored pencils. They sprung to life on the page, with small curls of green vines to wind upward. If one looked close enough, he had added the initials C and S into the vines and hid them well. The colors blended and soon he spun it around and raised a brow to Soren, "It's up to you which way you want it to go. Towards your palm or towards your elbow. You like it? Want me to switch it up a little?"

Soren was polite enough not to lurk or lean over Artan while he drew, understanding the artist's need for some sort of privacy while the work was being created.

When he saw the finished product, he just grinned. "Toward my elbow. Left side's closest to the heart." It was a sentimental fact that betrayed Soren as the romantic he was, but he didn't really care. He was nervous and excited and curious all at once. Artan could think he was a wuss if he wanted.

"I like the way you think, Soren." He wouldn't say much else to that, but it showed that the rough-around-the-edges short man was far more a romantic than he showed, too. "Alright. Now we'll work on my future son in law's thing. What'll it be, doofus?"

Cass chuckled sheepishly, "Oh. Well, I'm getting two. The first one's for my left wrist. Can you draw a harp?"
"I can sure as hell try." Artan said with a brow raise, before Cass offered up a picture of one. In fact, it was a photo of Soren's harp on a white background.
"And forget-me-nots up the long side, here." He said, tracing a line up the photo. Artan nodded to Cass, and started to sketch that. "What's the second?"
"Right wrist. It'll be a black widow with a clef note instead of an hourglass."

Artan simply nodded. It took about fifteen minutes for him to sketch out the preliminary for the harp, and by that time, Cass had found a flash art of a black widow for Artan to use, and had finished his beer.

He was electing to only get one tattoo that evening, as two consecutive needles would be far too much for him. He wasn't used to pain, he didn't like pain, and paying someone to inflict it upon him was contrary to everything he'd ever thought. His other one would come later.

The photo of his harp made him smile a little, and he pluced imaginary notes on his jeans to calm himself down after he finished his beer as well.

Artan didn't take much time at all to get the sketches ready, and he smiled, leading Soren over to the work chair. "Okay, relax. It's really not as bad as most people say. It stings, and it sucks for a while, but you'll go numb before I even get the color in. it shouldn't take more than 45 minutes for yours. Half an hour, actually. So why forget-me-nots?" He asked, starting to mix the colors of the ink before he laid the stencil down on Soren's wrist. It was almost like a temporary tattoo.

Cassidy sat down beside Soren on the other side, kissing his hand. "Because of Sable. Her middle name means it. And she's my cousin, so that's why she's being included in the tattoo for him, as well." He squeezed Soren's hand. "You'll be fine, princess. Artan here is a genius."

Artan huffed a chuckle, "That's going a bit far, I just have a lot of training. Over a decade of experience. You've seen Henn's tattoos? She said I did most of them. I did the heart. And from what scruffy here's said, I did his armband, too. And you've seen your mom and dad's work. You don't have anything to worry about." He sat down and turned on the machine, and it sounded like a dentist's drill.

"The first five minutes are the worst." Artan informed. "So tell me about your lady. What about her makes you smile?"

That was a clever distraction, and Soren smiled. "What doesn't? She's - " He paused and hissed faintly when the needle first touched skin, but grit his teeth and made himself continue. "She's smart. She's this... adorable sort of mother figure to so many people, but to me, she's just sweet. She's sassy. I'm a sucker for when she bosses me around. She's the most beautiful woman I've ever seen." He had been thinking about shrugging but remembered that was probably a bad idea.

"She just takes my breath whenever she's around, kind of like this guy." He grinned and stuck his tongue out at Cass.

"Hey, whatever dude." Cass said with a small smile. "I'm just glad you found someone who won't chew your heart up this time." He squeezed Soren's shoulder while Artan grinned and continue to work. "Sounds like a good lady. You said she's your cousin, Cassidy? How's that factor into things?"

Cass just smirked, "Makes foursomes awkward."

That got Artan to laugh outright. "Yeah okay, I'll keep asking Soren questions then, wiseass." He looked up to the blond and shook his head before going back to work. "So she's really something else, then?"

Soren turned his head long enough to kiss Cass' wrist while Artan worked. He laughed at the foursome crack and shook his head. All of the banter and wisecracking helped to distract him from the pain, which was starting to ebb the more the tattooing went on.

"Yeah, she's really something. Where me and Cass are from, she's older than us. Kind of my schoolteacher crush, you know? She's always been there for me, so it was sort of a trip coming back and finding her younger than me. Really, really nice. She's - I didn't think she could get hotter, but the reality is so much better than my thoughts ever were."

Artan got a wistful smile. "I showed up here and found Petit the first night. I don't know if I told either of you how it went down, but see, she and me knew each other about a decade ago. We were just kids then, but we both lived on Tortuga with the pirates and went through the Guild trials together. I had a huge raging crush on her the entire time, but she was sort of seeing this guy that was my friend, you know, so I didn't step on any toes or anything. I mean sure, I unabashedly checked her out, but hell, she's hot, what could I do? It fell apart after a while and I moved away, hadn't seen her for a long time, then we both got sucked up here and it was like no time had passed between us. I'm really glad I found her."

Cassidy listened and smiled slightly. Henn's folks were alright people, for people he was completely intimidated by. "That's really sweet, Mr. S. I mean, hell. You two are going to be making the girl of my dreams one day, so I might be a bit biased due to that, but it's nice that you and she finally hit it off."

He nodded enthusiastic agreement. "Henn's one of my best friends. I'd say thanks for helping make her, but I'm sure that it wasn't a problem for you." He looked at his arm, smiling as he saw the lines form. "Yeah, I guess I'm moving pretty fast with Sable, but we're going to have a long engagement." He bit his lower lip and looked at Cass. Sometimes he felt bad for bringing it up.

Cassidy didn't mind. In fact, he was happy for Soren that he was so content. It was the first time in a long, long time that he saw Soren smile so often. "Hey, you did good. If she were anyone else, you know I'd hate her."

Artan was nearly done with the linework already, going over the thin parts again to make sure there was no spotting before he leaned back and got another color loaded into the machine. "Don't get me started on moving fast, guys. You wouldn't like the story."

Soren raised his eyebrows and blinked. He wondered what Artan's story was like, but he was too busy blushing to really want to bring it up. He figured Cass would for him, anyway.

"How'd you propose, Artan?"

Cassidy actually left well enough alone when Artan said they wouldn't like the story. He tilted his head as if punctuating Soren's question.

Artan chuckled slightly, "Awkwardly. See, I'm no romantic, I mean, I can be, but I hate cliche. So she showed up for lunch one day and I just slipped the ring on her finger and asked her. I didn't get fancy with it or nothin'. After all, we see diamonds and rubies and all that crap every day. To us, it's not all that impressive. I got her a locket ring - a poison ring - because that was actually practical for her. Not to mention, I kind of like the idea of little hidden compartments for stuff, and the ring's an antique. I had to ask Bill to find it for me, even. An authentic, eighteenth century assassin's ring. It doesn't even look like one, if you just glance at it, but it's striking, to say the least." He sat up and inspected his work before setting back into it, wiping away the excess ink and the bit of blood that Soren had seeped. "You know, your skin's a lot like your dad's. It's thick, but it takes to ink well."

"That's more romantic, though. The fact that you know her so well." He smiled and looked down at Artan's handiwork. "I'm just guessing that's a good thing." He was feeling a bit better about things, but he really did sort of want to wait to get his other wrist done. He didn't have anything as thought out, and he wanted to make sure that he got ink that would mean something for him in forty years at least.

"So, uh. What's an assassin's ring do? I'm not really sure." He felt like an idiot, but it would nag at him for weeks if he didn't ask.

"Assassin rings, or poison rings, are like little lockets. They have hinges under the jeweled part and a little place to store things. Tiny photographs, little notes, deadly doses of cyanide. You name it." Artan got a small smile on his face, "She also likes collecting historical, peculiar assassin's weapons. She just got a set of hair combs from a place. I'm pretty sure we'll have a display case soon enough." He actually rather liked them, too. They were novel, and interesting, and kind of fun to think about.

"Things like that are pretty, though." Soren felt kind of goofy talking to people like Artan who had actual talents. Soren never thought of his magic as a skill; it was something he'd learned how to do when he was four, and he'd always kept practicing in sort of idle ways. Artan was a thief, which just seemed way more practical than what he could do.

If there was a chime on the door it wasn't tripped. But that was because Henn had bypassed it entirely, she did that kind of thing on occasion.

In fact there wasn't any noise until the happy bark and the scrabble of paws on the floor, followed by Henn's stifled giggle as Dog came around the corner pulling a wagon. A very very tiny red wagon. There were sandwiches stacked in it, wrapped tidily in almost meticulously-creased wax paper.

Artan sat up and pulled the machine away from Soren's arm immediately at the sound of the bark. "Henn! Pleasant surprise. That your new boyfriend, because baby, you've done a hell of a lot better." He turned off the machine and set it aside to give Henn a warm hug. "I'm working on Soren's tattoo, here. Was just telling them about your mom's engagement ring."

Cassidy wasn't expecting Henn to show up until later, but now was as good of time as any. He jumped up and gave Henn a quick squeeze as well. "Nah, that's our pet gargoyle, Dogstoyevski. And he has dinner." He kissed Henn's cheek. "Soren's not as big of a wuss as he lets on, check it out!"

Soren's eyes lit up at the prospect of food, as well as his dog. He waited until Artan's needle was far from his wrist before flopping down on the ground to smooch Dog. He beamed at Henn. "I'm still a big wuss, you know. And thank you for food." He was pretty gleeful at the prospect of pausing and sitting and having a little impromptu picnic.

Henn grinned, swinging herself up to sit on the nearest empty counterspace, "The poison ring? She still wears it, sometimes." She draped her arms over Cass' shoulders, leaning around him to see Soren's tattoo, "Lemmie see! And you'll always be a wuss, even with ink" There was a quick raspberry then, just because she really was that mature sometimes, "And it's just eggsalad, that's why I'm here like, way early." She pointed to the ribbon-harness holding the wagon to Dog, "Just pull the ends, it'll untie, he was giving Kitten rides earlier."
