His jaw tightened slightly. "I do hope this not-very-gentleman did not manage to, er, molest you in any fashion?" It was a loaded question, to be sure. Although not technically his wife or even a lover, Henry felt as much affection for Jane as if she would have been, and the idea that a man had caused her any amount of discomfort was unacceptable.
Henry's temper cooled, though, as he watched the subtle and unconscious display, his eyes following with great attention Jane's movements. To an instinctual level of his mind, the gestures were as clear an invitation as if Jane had engraved it by hand.
"Jade is a woman of more than impressive resources, and great wisdom in the ways of the world. I have no doubt she will do right by you," he said, then added a smirk. "And if she doesn't, you may refer her to me."
A waiter arrived, and dinner began to pass in a most pleasant manner. It wasn't long before they were both sitting quite close and laughing loud enough to draw looks from the other patrons.
