Sable leads Petit out her back door into a tiny courtyard. At the back corner, they go into a tunnel made of bushes -- Sable gives strict instructions for Petit to duck and STAY DOWN the whole way. Through the tunnel, they travel through what must be the length of four or five, maybe six little back courtyards before emerging into a cluttered space with high walls. It's a steampunk mad science lab set up outdoors. Sable ignores it all and walks around to the side of the house where the trap doors to the cellar are. She uses a key to open them, and steps down. At the bottom of a small flight of steps is a door, a hallway, and through yet another locked door, a veritable laboratory of literary science. Here is the vault that keeps Sable's most ancient and precious books -- first editions, handwritten volumes, books as old as printing or older.
"Go ahead and look around," Sable says to Petit. "It's still a little disorganized down here, and sometimes wanting a thing is enough to help it find YOU."
