Who: Dexter Morgan, OTA (Tag Death, Already! :P)
What:
Coffee. Pondering the new narcolepsy of the universe.
When/Where: Right the heck now, local Starschmuck's coffee, NYC
Warnings: None, atm.

Dexter was sipping at what felt like his tenth coffee of the day, trying to look over one of his open case files. He was surprised to find that a serial murderer, who had been keeping his attention for the past two months, had suddenly dropped off the radar. No new kills, in almost three weeks now. Not that he particularly minded the lack of new deaths, even if it was a bit boring.

Come to think, he was getting so sick of the reports, every time he read them, he fell asleep. Hence the sudden redoubling of his coffee addiction, as he fought to stay awake long enough, to work on some sort of profile.

Or maybe how to get him back...

He yawned deeply again, taking another pull from his mocha. Damn, he was starting to think he'd be better off dropping it, until the new kill.

When Dexter blinked, he'd notice the sight of a young woman with dark hair. Everyone in the coffee shop ignored her sudden appearance, acting as though she'd always been there, standing in line. Death ordered herself a small coffee and a slice of marble cake. After paying, she took her purchases over to Dexter's table. Craning her neck, she glanced over some of his open file. "That's not really a pretty picture," she said, not at all perturbed by the sight of blood. "Hello," she added as she sat across from him.

Glancing up at the comment, Dexter just stared as the girl moved to sit across from him, knowing enough to move the pictures under the scene description, not wanting to make her sick over the copious blood on in the photo.

"It's- I- A work. Case file. Do I...?" He gave her a questioning look, thinking maybe she thought he was someone else.

"Oh, it's fine," Death said cheerfully. "I don't even really notice gore anymore." She'd been seeing people in all sorts of mangled states for as long as there'd been people.

Sipping some coffee and picking at her cake, she grinned, "You do. I'm Didi." She offered him her hand. "We spoke before. I owed you a talk over a cup of coffee. Here I am!"

He had to think about this- it had been a long time since he'd spoken to anyone outside the precinct-

Didi. The woman who called herself death. That had been...

"Oh, uh, sorry. It's been a while. I, uh. How did you know I was here?"

"I know." Death smiled. "We've both been busy. And time moves... strangely for me." At his question, she paused. She considered telling him the truth, that he was one of hers who she could smell out easily. That might not go over so well. "I was in the neighborhood. I'm good at finding people."

"Oh," His response was flat, although his face looked curious about that- he was inquisitive enough to want to ask further, but... he didn't want to press his luck. The Grim Reaper suddenly deciding to drop in.

His head cocked to the side, a hand reaching up to gesture between them meaningfully.

"I'm not- this isn't." No, it couldn't be. She was being too nonchalant, for him to have-

It would explain the fatigue, though.

"Is it?"

"Oh no!" Her eyes widened and she tried very hard to bite back a grin. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean for it to sound like... you're fine!" She raised her hands and gestured. "You're not dying today."

A couple sitting behind them glanced over. Oops.

"I'm just here for coffee. Not on business." She popped a bit of cake into her mouth. "I like the marble loaf."

His eyes narrowed as he watched her eat, mouth screwing up like he was caught trying to smile and scowl at the same time. "Right."

He reached for his coffee, taking a drink while he tried to digest this. This girl obviously thought she was... well, Death. And apparently, without bothering to question it, he believed her- odd to realize, after the fact.

"But you really are..." How could it put it? "It, somehow? I don't... Sorry, that's. Rude. I just.." How do you make small-talk with the Grim Reaper?

Death was fairly certain that before she spent most of her days with George, she hadn't done things like this. Since George, she spoke more like a mortal, she acted more like a mortal. The worst part of it was that she was minding less and less who much of an effect her mortals had on her.

"I am... it." Death said. There was something in her eyes. Behind the sweet perkiness was something mysterious and old. "And I don't mind. You can be rude." A pause. "I'm not really a person in the strictest sense of the word. I look like a person sometimes, that's all."

"All right. I just. All that talk around the office of seeing Death firsthand. I'm digesting the irony." He took another drink of his coffee, letting it sink in. His eyes idly glanced over his case file again, even as he felt his eyes start to droop as he read the details.

"You might want to take a little break from reading," Death advised. "Enjoy your coffee for a second." She glanced down at the files. "I'm there. When you're at the scene, I am, too. You have seen me. Now you're just seeing me... differently."

His eyes snapped back to her, as she spoke. "You know what that's about, don't you?" He didn't bother asking what it was. From the little he'd seen of... 'powerful' types, on the boards, she wasn't likely to tell him, anyway. But it would at least... be something, if someone know what it was all about.

When she walked about being there, his jaw set, unsure if she was there all the time- at work, and at 'play'. He didn't dare ask, not sure he really wanted to know.

She rested her elbow on the table. "I know about it. I don't exactly know what it's about. This place is different. Sometimes... things just happen." She shrugged a little. "Have you noticed murders are down? Drastically? It's not just a coincidence."

"So, what- this place is giving everyone close to murders sedatives, or something?" He didn't add into the equation exactly how far his thoughts into the murders went; that he was logistical, getting into the heads of the killers, trying to see just how they did it, more than the why. It seemed simpler, to just assume it was anyone who came close to Death.

"Something like that." There was a sparkle of amusement in her eyes. She knew his secret, but it seemed a little rude to say so out loud, in public. "I think it's a balance. There's been a lot of chaos lately. The universe... or this world wants a rest."

He saw the look, and considered it answer enough, frowning a little but moving past it. "So it's willing to sacrifice existing murders being solved, and the criminals being caught, in the name of... whatever justifies this?" He knew she might not know- or at least, not be willing to say- but he was used to working through puzzles aloud. It could just as easily been rhetorical, as an actual question.

"You assume that the universe cares about the human justice system." Death looked up at him thoughtfully. "Maybe it doesn't. Maybe it just wants a break from all the psychic energy that comes from murder and fear and pain." A pause. "This is just a guess, of course. Whatever's doing this, it's not talking to me. It's just... doing."
