Who: Emma and Domino
What: Job interview-ish thing
When: Wednesday, 2pm
Warnings: None. Domino is on her very best behavior.

The times that Domino had felt the need to wear a business suit were few and far between. So she was a little uncomfortable in her pantsuit, fidgeting with the jacket more than was seemly. The school, from the outside at least, looked incredible. But, really, if it hadn't looked good, that would have been a huge surprise.

She'd put together a resume, and was trying not to worry about how empty of people skills it made her look. Emma would hire her, or she wouldn't. Either way, at least the interviw would be interesting.

She was show to the reception area outside Emma's office, and sat on the provided chairs, feeling vaugely as though she should be worried that someone would send a note to her caretaker.

Which made her snort and shake her head. And also wish that she had better telepathic sheilding. Oh well. Emma would just have to deal with her absurd thoughts.

It'd been almost a week since Emma had come into the school. During the summer, she didn't need to come in every day of the week. There were professors who dormed there, along with students who had no where else to go. Emma checked in to make sure things were running smoothly, but with fewer students and no classes being taught, her presence wasn't as necessary.

She'd come in a little early to do some paperwork. With new professors and prospective professors coming in, Emma suddenly was busy again. She didn't mind this terribly.

She felt Domino's mind when Domino entered the premises. She didn't wait more than ten minutes before Emma thought at her. Do come in, Domino.

Domino grabbed her portfolio, which was as new as her pantsuit, and strode into Emma's office, remembering just in time to sit with her legs closed.

"Nice to see you again. Under better circumstances."

This time they weren't trying to destroy Cable. Which was, all told, a good thing.

It was nice to not have to worry about the world ending every other week. Or be concerned over who would next be turned evil by some villain. Emma nodded and agreed, "Indeed." She glanced at Domino and did her best to hide a little smile. She was impressed that Domino had bothered to dress nice and look professional.

"How are you, Domino?" Emma's tone was soft, almost welcoming. She leaned back in her seat and looked superior without really meaning it. It was part of Emma's charm that she constantly appeared aloof.

Being used to dealing with men, who normally made sure to make a point of their superiority, Domino was actually a bit thrown by the friendliness. But it was, like most things since her arrival, the good kind of thrown. She wondered for a moment when the other shoe would finally drop.

"I'm pretty good. A bit bored, but it's a good kind of bored. Been spending most of my time napping, lately."

She relaxed, out of force of habit, but refrained from slinging her arm over the back of the chair. No sense in getting too comfortable. "How are you?

"I'm well," Emma said. And it felt a little strange coming from her lips. She wondered vaguely if she shouldn't tempt fate to throw something unpleasant her way. "It seems the universe cannot stop throwing children in my direction." Her lips curled into a half smile.

"How far along are you?" Emma asked, just barely glancing at Domino's stomach.

Domino laughed at Emma's mention of children. "Well, at least they're not evil. They seem to be alright, by and large."

The question made her shrug. "Probably a month-ish. During the last bit of craziness I was a mother, and after that we decided we'd try for a child. With my luck, it was probably the night we made the decision."

Rather a spur of the moment decision as well, but she was slowly shedding her fear of messing things up horribly.

"At least you didn't have to physically give birth to all your children."

"Let's hope it stays that way," Emma said. One of her girls had gone evil for a brief period and it had messed her up. Any emotion that might betray this fact couldn't be seen on Emma's face.

"Well, congrats." Emma said with a little smile. "I just delivered the one." Her youngest, the only child that was still a child and not a moody teen. "It's intimidating, giving birth and raising a child. But it gets easier with time." Emma was almost being kind. It never stopped being weird to her.

"Yeah. I'm hoping the future version of the kids show up in time to potty train themselves."

She laughed a little, canting her head a little. It was interesting seeing what the other supers were doing without the X-men. Emma being so. . . not bitchy was endlessly curious.

"Good luck with that."

Emma was in her element. She had her school and a family. She couldn't have asked for much more. That made her a little softer than normal. "So you've brought me your resume?" She asked in that annoying confident tone that telepaths seemed to used on people around them.

"Yeah. Which looks way more impressive in my usual line of work."

She'd originally had 'able to put up with Deadpool' at the top of her skills list in a much larger font.

She slid the leather folder over, trying to look as though she were extremely confident. But at the moment she was only pretty confident. It was a job that she actually wanted, that would give her actual experience with kids, and get her out of the house on a regular basis. It was, in short, what she thought she needed at that moment in time.

Emma grew silent as she glanced over the paper. There wasn't as much experience on the page as she might have liked, but Emma also took into account the fact that Domino had been a fighter in their world. And she had put up with Deadpool. That sort of thing was more impressive than any time spent in retail.

"Would you like to take a walk around the school, look around a bit?" Emma asked suddenly, looking back up at Domino.

Domino didn't fidget. But she wanted to.

"Sure!" She responded quickly, sitting up a bit straighter. She much preferred to move and do things than sit quietly and wait.

Emma put the resume down and got out of her seat. She was by the door within a minute's time, holding it open for Domino. "We can even meet some students later if you're interested," she said, "But first, I'll show you the gym and some classrooms."

"That would be nice. I'm looking forward to being around people on a more regular basis. It'll be kind of nice to have a purpose when I leave home every morning.

She stood and walked out the door, waiting politely on the other side for Emma.

Emma waved Domino to follow as she started to walk. Taunton was a mix between Hogwarts and Xavier's school. As such, the walls had a certain antiquated look. Modern looking lockers lined up against stone brick walls. It was pretty and still. This would change once the majority of students returned.

"If you have any questions, feel free to ask," Emma said. She turned and took a flight of stairs. Once they reached a landing, Emma opened a door and showed Domino a classroom. "Most of our classrooms look more or less the same. Science rooms are larger and more equipped. English is taught here." There were desks in rows, books in shelves, a board up front that could erase itself.

"Of course." She followed in Emma's step, keeping up easily. Domino kept mental track of all their turns, out of habit, and surveyed the halls as they went.

The classroom was of interest to her, since she hadn't seen one since high school. It was a lot nicer than the one she'd gone to. "What grades are taught here?"

She eyed the books, to get a sense of how difficult they were.

"You can look the books over if you'd like," Emma said, catching Domino's wandering eye. Arms crossed over her chest, she continued. "Honestly, we bring in children of all ages if they need shelter. The youngest ones are ten or so. We have private tutoring lessons to catch them up and then slowly introduce them to classes. Our older ones are preparing for university."

"I see."

She wandered over, examining the room closely. It was fascinating, in a weird way.

She eventually turned back to Emma, and nodded. "How large are the classes? Are they divided between the magic users and the metahumans, or is that just for power specific classes? Or not at all? Is there an ethic course?"

"Most classes don't have more than thirty students. Some classes are much smaller and we do have a few lectures that are larger than that." She rattled off this information as though she'd had to say this plenty of times before, "Our classes are usually mixed. We want to encourage harmony between baselines, metas, and wizards. Certain classes are only open to magic users or metas. These are usually practical application courses. Magical theory and evolutionary based classes are open to human students, as well as powered ones."

Emma smiled. She'd taught ethics back home. "Yes, we have ethics. You'll have to look over one of our course booklets. There are enough students who are interested that we can offer many different classes."

"That would be good, yes."

She approved.

"What do the lecture halls look like?"

She gave the room one final look, and wandered back to where Emma was standing.

Emma waved for Domino to follow and she was walking down the hall again. There was a double door in the distance which she headed toward. "I'll show you," Emma said.

After a moment, she opened the large doors and the stood at the top of a hall. There were enough chairs to fit between fifty and one hundred students. "These rooms aren't usually full to capacity," Emma said. "And there are complimentary recitation classes to go with the lectures. They're smaller classes where students can ask questions about lecture and discuss topics."

The main reason Domino had wanted to see the lecture hall was curiosity. She hadn't been in this kind of class before.

"Wow. I couldn't keep that many kids under control."

She hadn't meant to say that outloud, but didn't bother being embarrssed at the outburst. "How many teachers are there? How big is this school, anyway?"

She didn't bother inspecting this room as closely. Beside chairs and the blackboard, it looked pretty much empty, and it would drive her crazy walking past all those rows. Paranoia isn't always such a great thing.

"We have a reasonably large staff. I believe the ratio is thirty to one, though it's probably a bit higher at the moment. We've had some staff disappear on us," Emma said with an annoyed sigh. "The school itself is large. Four floors. Maybe a thousand students... the numbers change constantly because students come and go." A pause. "It gets easier. The longer you teach, the more you can handle."

"Come," Emma said. She started to walk out of the room. "I'll show you the fields."

She followed, still keeping track of turns and landmarks.

"It must be a little harder running a school here, where the vortexes can deposit children wherever, and take them away just as easily."

A thousand students. Wow. "Are Candy Quackenbush and Onyxx attending? I can't remember if they said or not."

"It helps considerably that I am a telepath," Emma said. They went down a flight of stairs and then were outside, where everything was green. Emma began walking toward courts, but stopped and pointed, "We train mutants with feral or more dangerous powers over that hill. We try to give them a little distance. It gives them freedom to let themselves go a little without putting other students in danger." She resumed walking and headed toward a series of courts. In the distance children's voices could be heard.

"Makes sense. That's generally how I've learned to deal with them."

Deadpool was just the most annoying and famous of the difficult people she'd dealt with on a regular basis.

"Are there organized sports?" It seemed like such a random question, but she knew how much having a physical outlet had helped most of the kids she'd dealt with.

"Yes," Emma nodded. "We have different teams within the school and they play one another." As they got nearer to basketball courts, Emma spotted a few kids playing around with a ball. "The courts are open to all the students most days after class."

"Yo Ms. Frost!" One of the boys shouted, waving in her direction. The others were glancing at Domino curiously.

"Mr. Marquez," Emma nodded at him, the slightest hint of warmth there in her voice. "These are some of our students who are dorming over the summer holiday," she explained to Domino.

The kids went back to playing their game, casting glances over their shoulders to check Domino and Emma out. "No," Emma said. "We have commuters - not as many as those who dorm, but there's a good chunk of them." Emma turned. "We have the library over on the other side of the campus. And I believe that covers most of the school."

"Lots to learn. It seems like a good place, though."

She looked around the field, and watched the kids play for a moment. "I guess it's what some of us have been working for this whole time."

Us not including Domino. She usually did what she did for the thrill. "You must be quite proud."

"I am," Emma said. There was something in her face, a kind of glow that hadn't been there back home. Because back home, they'd never really had much of a victory. They'd only lost children and been kicked by the anti-mutant group of the week repeatedly. Taunton was what Emma had always wanted Xavier's school to be. "We're lucky here," she said.

She fell silent for a second before shaking herself out of her reverie. "Anyway, I do believe we'll be taking you on staff."

Domino smiled as well. This place truly was a miracle. Both she and Nate had committed to something, Emma was smiling, and nothing had gone to hell yet. Whatever they had done to deserve this place, it more than made up for the heartbreak of home.

"Great! I'm excited to work here."

She realized what a gift Taunton really was, and suddenly knew why Xavier's school had been so important to so many people for so long.

Wow. So this was what maturity felt like.
