Who: Carrie and Firefly
What: Carrie's having nightmares
When: Uhhh, nighttime.
Where: Firefly's dorm
Warnings: Nope!

Firefly had never really had bad nightmares before; sometimes she dreamt of the Smooze or the times her friends were enslaved or that time they were turned into evil dragons, sure, but they were never so bad she couldn't sleep. The only way she knew how to deal with this kinda thing was movies and junk food. It should be a nice movie, something wholesome and probably animated. There was a pretty big stash of Disney movies in a box by the TV, that would do nicely. Though she suspected that the movie wasn't very important, she guessed her new friend needed to talk more than anything.

Her roommate had gone somewhere for the night, said something about "getting laid," whatever that meant, so the dorm and its contents were all hers tonight. The dorm was mostly spotless. She spread out a tye-dye comforter on the couch, lit a candle that would fill the room with the scent of vanilla, and checked on the ice cream reserves- plenty of dairy in that little freezer. And just as she was satisfied that this room had no taste, smell, sight or sound that would further antagonize her friend, the buzzer sounded. She pressed the button that would let Carrie up, then opened the door. In Rainbow-Brite pajamas she waited in the doorway for Carrie to make it up the elevator and down the hall. Firefly was worried.

The recent murders were taking a toll on Carrie. All of those people ending up dead, it was just as bad as her high school, but at least those people deserved what they got for laughing. It didn't stop the fact that she kept remembering that night in her sleep, or dreaming of a maze where she tried to find her mother, only to keep bumping into a creature in the shape of her mother.

Not even really bothering to properly dressed, she threw some trousers on from under her night gown and shoved on an old pair of sneakers. Normally Carrie wouldn't even consider going out this late at night, but she wanted a good nights sleep without any nightmares and she felt so tense inside that even if someone attacked her, she'd kill them

Thankfully, she had made it to Firefly's dorm without any trouble. The streets relatively deserted. Once there, she pressed the button to go inside the building. There was a lady at the front desk, she pulled out her school ID and told her who she meant to see. The woman took her ID and pointed to the elevator, giving her the floor number. She thanked her and went inside, pressing the correct button and waited.

The doors opened and she went through the hallway, knocking on Firefly's dorm. "hey, Firefly? It's Carrie."

Firefly flung the door open and greatly resisted the urge to fling her arms around Carrie; instead she hugged her more cautiously, having learned from her earlier mistakes. "Carrie!" She let the girl go and ushered her inside. "Are you okay?"

She was grateful for the hug, even more so that it was slow-she wasn't sure she could handle Firefly's usual hugs.

"I'm fine." Her voice was uncertain though, her therapist said that nightmares wouldn't be uncommon considering what she had experienced. It didn't mean she could handle them at the moment.

She slowly lifted her head as she stepped inside, her eyes wide. The room was colorful, bright and the smell of vanilla made it even 'softer'. Firefly in her pajamas and hair added to it. It was better than her room back home, where the pictures of Jesus as the Good Shepard covered the walls helped her feel that she was being protected.

She sat down on the comforter, her hair spilling over her shoulders. "You said you had movies?" It was a novel concept to her, being able to watch movies at home-not that she even saw movies at the theater.

She hoped Carrie didn't notice her roommate's side of everything- the other girl had a thing for H.R. Giger and M.C. Escher- the Escher stuff was weird but not scary, but the Giger posters Firefly herself couldn't look at for too long without flinching. Luckily Firefly's side was bright and shiny enough to drown out her roommate's mildly morbid streak.

"Movies? Yeah! I got lots." She dragged the big cardboard box closer to the couch and dug through the mix of VHS and DVD, showing each box to Carrie as she announced their titles and set them one by one down next to her. "Lots of cartoons! Let's see, this one's about a Lion King, this one's about the very Last Unicorn, this one's about a Little Mermaid, and hey this one kinda looks like me and Megan! Weird. Okay, this one's about some Turtles who are also Ninjas, uhhh... Rainbow Brite, Strawberry Shortcake, The Tick? ew... Beauty and the Beast, Finding Nemo, Felix the Cat, 101 Dalmatians, Lady and the Tramp, Alice in Wonderland..." She paused as she looked at one cover closely, trying to make out what was going on in the picture on the front. "Schoolgirl Hentai Tentacle Monster Twelve? That doesn't look very fun... Oh. Oh." Her face turned bright red and she whipped the DVD over her shoulder. It hit the wall with a thwack and a crunch and landed softly behind the computer desk in what was designated as The Dark Place, her roommate's area. Peering in the box cautiously to make sure it held no further dangers, she continued on with her list, which consisted mostly of Disney's entire catalogue of animated movies.

"So whatcha wanna watch?"

Maybe it was Carrie's own morbid side, but she couldn't help but steal a glance at the other side of the room. The posters of what looked like black and white dreams were especially fascinating, but her attention was drawn back when Firefly brought out a box of movies.

Carrie got off of the couch to have a closer look, feeling overwhelmed but in a strangely good way as the trace of a smile flitted on her features.

"Uh..." she really couldn't decide, so she put her hand in the box and grabbed the first box she touched, bringing it up to read the title. "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?" the cover did show what looked like turtles, but not the sort she was familiar with-maybe that's why they were called 'Mutants'. She was what her professors' called a 'mutant', and there were more like her at the academy. The ones on the box looked like fighters, but not scary or mean..she handed it to Firefly.

"This one maybe?"

"Yeah, that looks good!" She grinned and popped the tape in the VCR and turned the TV on before flicking off the lights. Firefly disappeared into the kitchen for a minute and came back with two bowls of ice cream, some sprinkles and chocolate chips. Movies weren't movies without junk food and ice cream wasn't ice cream without sprinkles, in her opinion. She handed one of the bowls to Carrie, set the containers of toppings down on the coffee table and flopped down on the couch next to Carrie as the opening theme song started up.

Carrie nodded her thanks as she handed her a bowl. She normally tried to stay away from sweets, as it gave her pimples, but Firefly was trying so hard to make her feel better, she didn't want to insult her by refusing.

She bent down to put some sprinkles on her ice cream just as the tape started. Her head jerked up at the start of the theme song and she didn't know what to make of watching it. However, without realizing she felt a smile creep over her face...having never watched cartoons as a child, there was a silliness and humor that was innocent and not naive.

She had actually forgotten about the bowl in her hand until the chill set in. She proceeded to put rainbow sprinkles on her ice cream, keeping an eye on the cartoon, before finally taking a bite of ice cream.

Firefly had never seen this either and she was just as enthralled with the opening. So they're turtles, and mutants, and ninjas, and they fight crime. That was awesome. It was a kind of goofiness that she could definitely wrap her head around, as it followed the same cartoon logic that her own world was subject to. In fact, the world of crime-fighting turtles seemed far more logical in comparison to this current "real" world.

She curled up in her spot on the couch, nibbling at her ice cream. "If I ever find a turtle, I'm so totally going to help him fight stuff," she said absent-mindedly.

Carrie could only take a few small bites of ice cream, this time though, it wasn't out of nerves or shyness.

Turtles fighting crime..and they weren't overly violent. She actually liked the one in orange-Michaelangelo. She found it strange that their apparent mentor was a mutated rat named Splinter, but also comforting. He was wise and calm..so different than Carrie's own mother.

The scene moved to the 'bad guys', but even they were more humorous than dangerous-in fact it was mostly by wit that they were defeated.

She couldn't help but smile. Even if it was meant for children, the fact that Carrie had never even seen cartoons as a child meant that it held some giddy excitement for her. The sugar from the ice cream helped too.

Firefly looked over and saw Carrie's smile and it made her smile too. She seemed to be feeling a little better. Firefly's remedy seemed to be working.

The movie came to a finale and the turtles saved the day of course. The credits rolled with the theme song. Firefly bit her lip in serious contemplation. "Those guys rock. I like.. Raff," she said, referring to the red-bandana'd turtle. He was the gruff one, the rebel, an odd choice for her. But she'd been the first one to fight back when the dragons attacked, she'd been the one to get help, she'd been the one to fool the dragons with her daredevil flying- going against the warnings of her friends. In short, she'd been the rebel in her world. Raphael was more like her than what showed on the surface.

She liked the other characters too, even the bad guys. Shredder wasn't as scary as her world's Tirac but he still beat out every other villain of Ponyland. So she wouldn't want to meet him in person, but he was safely locked away in the TV screen and therefore easier to appreciate.

The ex-pony stretched as if she were a cat and ate the last bite of her mostly melted ice cream.

It was different from anything Carrie had seen, but that was very much a good thing.

"I like..well, Mikey.." there was a lightheartedness and an innocence about him, and yet he had a good heart. However, she liked all of them. Even if they were in a sort of exile, they had eachother and Splinter.

Shredder, he was scary, but he was scary in a predictable way. You knew you had to fear him, it's harder to fear someone when they seem meek and..

No, she wouldn't go to that train of thought. Not tonight.

She had already finished her ice cream during the movie, feeling relaxed and settled enough with Firefly.

The bowl lifted from her hands onto the coffee table as Carrie curled up on the sofa.

She nodded.

"I'm still learning how to control them. Picking up a small object is easy, but..if I get too stressed out or panicked, they..can go haywire I guess."

"Part of the nightmare was that it was me who caused the building back in America to explode." It was a sign of how stronger she had gotten. Nothing in the room was disturbed when she started thinking about the nightmares.

"Oh, Carrie! It couldn't have been you. It was that scary clown guy, and he didn't even have any powers. Y'know, a lot of my friends back home have powers like yours. And it's not a bad thing, you shouldn't be scared of yourself or what you think you might do. Cause I know you're not a bad person, and you wouldn't do anything to hurt people on purpose." Getting scared of herself- that anxiety- was probably what was causing a lot of Carrie's problems, Firefly thought.

"Do you have anyone to help teach you how to control it?" She didn't have any special powers herself, other than her wings, so she couldn't help. She wished one of the others were here, one of the unicorns would know what to do.

"There at people at the academy that have powers, they could teach me how far I could go. I'm better at controlling them now than I was back home."

"It's not my powers I'm scared of. Back home..I wasn't.." She took a deep breath, obviously reliving things she didn't want to. " I didn't have anyone at home that really, genuinely cared about me and at school, it seemed I was blamed for everything and always the butt of practical jokes." Her eyes shifted around the room. "The night I arrived here, I was humiliated in front of the whole school. It hurt so much, and I wanted to pay them back...I ended up causing the entire school gym to burn down with nearly everyone in it."

She didn't look at Firefly, scared of her reaction.

She was glad to hear that Carrie had people who could help her with her powers, it was somewhat of a relief actually. She nodded and listened to Carrie's story of her home. It sounded rather awful, and she felt for her friend.

But when Carrie got to the part where she burned down the gym... It gave Firefly pause. She'd never known someone who had done bad things on that scale but wasn't evil. Firefly had never even heard of murder or manslaughter before arriving in this universe. It was scarily parallel to the Joker blowing up the newspaper in Firefly's mind.

But Carrie's not a bad person. It was something she couldn't reconcile.

She couldn't say anything, as she was so far out of her league in this conversation. Her expression was a mixture of shock and concern. But not fear.

Carrie was surprised that she could almost 'sense' Firefly's shock. She slowly looked up and was visibly relieved that the girl didn't appear frightened or upset.

She reached out and held Firefly's shoulder reassuringly.

"I'm not sorry I got back at them,." she took a deep breath. " you have to understand that I had to put up with the taunting for twelve years. That night, I tried to take control of my life, to be normal and try to be accepted, but it all blew up in my face. When I got home, I wanted to apologize to momma for not believing in her, but she called me Evil and tried to kill me."

She let out a breath, feeling better at having told her. "I'd..I'd still like to be friends, but I wanted you to know. I'm not evil..I'm not..I just can only take so much."

Firefly let out a puff of air, mimicking Carrie's sigh, but somehow she made it horse-ish, like a snort. It was a gesture of contemplation. She looked over and gave the blonde a reassuring smile. "Of course we're friends." That part had never crossed her mind. Ponies never ditched their friends. As far as she knew, once you were someone's friend you were always their friend. That was the easy part. The rest was a lot to digest.

She knew how harmful teasing could be, it had caused a couple ponies to run away and get themselves into trouble before, but things always resolved themselves in the end. "Carrie, what you went through, what they did... to make you do those things, it must have been terrible. You... you must have had no choice." And that solidified it in her brain, simple as that.

"I know you're not evil. I'm so sorry your mom couldn't see that."

What she said broke down Carrie's composure. She leans forward and hugs her tightly, leaning her head into her shoulder. She was so worried Firefly might be angry, that the relief she felt when she said she was still her friend was overwhelming.

"Thank you thank you thank you."

Hugs were nice, and simple, and especially enjoyable now that she had arms. Firefly squeezed back with all her tiny might, completely reassured that there wasn't going to be any tension or awkwardness between the two of them. "Carrie, you're my first friend here, you know? I'd never want to lose you."

The hug finished what the ice cream and movie started, Carrie felt the rest of the tension leave her.

Firefly's statement left her surprised, and it was evident when she finally pulled away.

"Really? but you're so nice, I would've thought you had a lot of friends."

She smiled. "I don't want to lose you, either."

She bit her lip in a slight bit of shyness. "I had a lot of friends before I came here. Hundreds. We were all a big family. But after, well... I talk to people, and they're nice, especially here on campus they teach me games sometimes, but I don't... I don't really understand people. I like them a lot, but they make everything too complicated. Nobody wants to play that much anymore."

She smiled. "Except you. Even with all the bad stuff, you still know how to have fun."

She looked down a moment.

"I don't really know how, but..I never really got to play much when I was younger. Everything in my life was always so serious."

The sugar was starting to were off, and in combination with the lessening of tension-plus the vanilla candle-Carrie felt herself finally becoming tired.

This pony should've been asleep a long time ago, and her second wind was wearing off as well. "We need to stop being serious and start being awesome," she said after stifling a yawn.

Carrie covered her mouth as she yawned, not being able to hide it as Firefly did-nerves and sugar rushes were draining after all.

"I've been serious for fifteen years, have a lot of years to make up for."

"Do you mind if I spend the night here?" Sleeping on a couch would certainly be more comfortable than those nights she was forced to spend in her closet.

She sat back on the couch, wrapping the comforter around her. She smiled. "Thank you, night."
