Who: Death and Jason Todd
What: Jason just got blown up.
Warnings: Gruesome stuff
When: Around midnight this morning.

By rights, Jason should have been dead. It wasn't often that a girl is close enough to an exploding bomb that it actually forces the air out of her lungs, but Jason had done it and could add that to her long list of life experiences that no one else got to do. Meanwhile, she was bloody, bruised, broken, and burnt.

"Ugh," she muttered. Fortunately, she still had the ability to groan.

All right, inventory, she thought, trying desperately to ignore the various pain signals her body was sending her. My leg hurts. Probably some shrapnel in it. Didn't hit an artery, so I shouldn't bleed out. Clothes half burnt off, but not naked. Also good. I'm wearing boy underwear. Skin blistering, meaning second degree burns. Would probably be worse if I were a guy. Left eye swollen shut. Missing a tooth. Probably got hit in the face with something. She tried to take a deep breath and winced from the pain. Broken ribs. Several. Broken wrist. Probably comes from the awkward position I was in behind the desk.

She took shallow breaths and tried to stay calm. "I knew I should have finished that article when I got it."

A disembodied voice spoke, low and clear in Jason's ear, "Well, this will be a lesson in not procrastinating, won't it?"

As far as tragedies in large went, this explosion in the Times building hadn't been the worst or the ugliest. The number of casualties had been on the lower end of the spectrum. Death had been there instantly, walking through smoke filled hallways to collect the dead.

She'd gone to Jason last, meaning he'd been in the rubble alone for a few moments. She spoke before appearing. (Her disembodied voice could be heard, low and clear in Jason's ear, "Well, this will be a lesson in not procrastinating, won't it?") And then she appeared in the doorway, glancing at him and trying not to look worried. That might concern him, if Death were peering down at him grimly.

There was rubble everywhere. Death walked around most of it and through that which was too big to circumvent. She made it to his side quickly. "Hi."

Jason took her earplugs out of her ears with her good hand. "I'll keep that in mind next time." Her voice was quiet and pained, lacking the usual bravado that she preferred.

It was difficult to see, and Jason's grab bag of superpowers had never granted her night vision. She could only just make out the features of Death's face, and even then with no great clarity, but that might have come from looking through one swollen eye. "Who else was injured?" she asked, well aware that Death wouldn't be there unless she hadn't been alone in the building.

Death just looked Jason over for a moment. Gore didn't ever put her off as she'd seen the absolute worst over the course of history. Still, she winced internally. Because this was her friend. Because he was hurting.

"They're not finding many survivors," Death said. She slowly lowered herself onto the floor so that she was on her back, beside Jason. "Almost everyone who was inside is dead."

"Almost? Oh." It was strange, being faced with the prospect of your own mortality. Growing up he'd swung on trapezes without a net, jumped three stories to land on top of bad guys, dodged bullets fired by groups that outnumbered him twenty to one, but it had never been a question of death.

And after she'd discovered that she might be immortal, that had actually been scarier. She didn't want to outlive everyone she knew. It was horrifying. And now it wasn't an issue, because everyone else was going to outlive her.

"I have letters," Jason began. She stopped suddenly as a sudden pain shot through her. She began again, a couple of tears running down her face. "I have letters. Hidden in my apartment in the bookshelf, where I could be sure Cass wouldn't look. In case anything happened. One for her, one for Bruce... everyone in my family. You and George too. Just in case--nngh!" She broke off again, breathing as deeply as she could.

"I want you... these letters, I want you... to make sure Cass doesn't find them. I... am much too busy to die now." She let out a mirthless chuckle. "Maybe the next time a building falls on me."

Death reached out as Jason spoke, just barely touching his face. She brushed some tears off his bloody cheek. The way she touched him, it wouldn't hurt. She couldn't take away his pain. She surely wouldn't add to it.

"If you're sure," she said, a small smile on her face, "I'll keep an eye on her while you're busy recovering."

"You're good people, D." Jason smiled, despite the pain she was in. "Make sure everyone else here gets where they're going." She rested her forehead against Death's hand, coming as close to a hug as she could give at the moment. "I'm glad to be your friend."

She sighed very softly. Even this much attention had exhausted her. "I hope I don't have a concussion, because I'm going to sleep now." It probably was a concussion, but there was little she could do about it right now. Her eyes closed and her breathing steadied, safe for a few winces in unconsciousness.

"I'm glad we're friends, too. And don't worry, I'll take care of them." She saw Jason's eye shut. There was no stopping him from going under. There was too much stress on his body. "You'll be okay," Death said quietly. When she was sure he was good and asleep, she added, "I love you, too." Death shifted so that her hand covered his. Her touch was feather light.

It crossed a few old boundaries she'd set to stay there beside Jason while he slept, but Death didn't care. Too attached to leave him alone, she remained at his side until she heard muffled voices and the slam of hammer against fallen concrete. She didn't disappear completely until they broke through and someone rushed to check Jason's pulse. He'd live to see another day, it was announced. He'd probably be the only one.
