Who: Remy LeBeau and Lulu.
What: Practicing powers.
When: Tonight.
Where: Remy knows a spot in the swamp.
Warnings: Swearing and explosions.

Lulu had told Skwisgaar that she was going to go practice her magic with a friend for a while. After kissing him goodbye, she smiled a little to herself. They'd spent the night in Mordhaus proper, and she actually really liked it there.

She'd let Remy know where she was, though she had an inkling that he might already know; he'd said that he knew a younger version of Skwisgaar. Remy struck her as a man who had his finger on the pulse of everything. And because he'd said he was going to pick her up, she made sure to wear pants and a corset that gave her some arm movement for casting. She couldn't help but run her fingers up and down her new tattoo, smiling at how the skin was already healed (thanks to some help from their always on-call magical medic). After tying up her hair into a bun, she went outside to wait for the motorcycle she felt pretty confidant would rumble up the path.

Remy did show up after a while, cigarette lit and at the side of his plush lips, sunglasses over his odd eyes, which he'd kept hidden from Lulu since they'd first met. On his belt was something that looked like a nightstick, but slightly longer and made of metal. "You ready?"

He didn't kill the engine on his bike, he just waited for her to hop on. It struck him that she wore the same pants the day before, as well. But what he noticed the most was the new tattoo and the ring. He didn't say anything about either.

Lulu smiled at him, wondering how he managed to ride a motorcycle and smoke at the same time. She noticed the metal object on his belt and was curious to see what sort of weapon it was. She'd never been good with weapons, her arms far too weak to lift any sort of sword.

She nodded an answer to his question, going to the bike and swinging a leg on. She didn't hesitate to put her arms around his torso once she was settled; if she had to pick between that or falling off, she would gladly cling to the thief.

He set off as soon as she was settled and holding on, and soon they made their way to the portkey, which he only slowed down enough to touch quickly, bringing him, her, and the bike onto the road, on the road that led out of New Orleans, and into the swamp. The cypress trees and kudzu lined the roads, and the sound and scent of nature pervaded the air, almost loud enough to be heard over the roar of his motorcycle. He took a drag of his cigarette and exhaled through his nose, before turning a corner into a long driveway to a modest, Colonial mansion made of brick, with tall, alabaster pillars at the front. It was nestled into the forest and swamp, just on a hill where nothing seemed to be able to touch it, and it was surrounded by a tall iron gate. He stopped the bike and snagged the keys from the ignition, pocketing them easily. "Welcome to Louisiana, Lulu. Gunna see if t'boy's home, know Petit's out on a job now." He waved over his shoulder for her to follow her inside the thick oak doors, to a modest foyer, where he called out, "Boy, y'here?"

And from one corner of the mansion came a reply, "Here! Comin', hold your horses, old man, I'm workin' here!"

The voice would be familiar to Lulu.

He finally showed up a few moments later, and raised a brow, first to Remy, then to the woman who followed him in. "Jesus, you just keep showing up everywhere, don't you, sugar? I didn't know you knew old devil eyes here, Lulu!"

He turned to Remy then, "That's my ink on her, just worked on her and Skwisgaar last night."

Lulu blinked and grinned and went to go hug Artan. He was friend enough where she thought she could, after two tattoos and enough confessions to fill the hours he'd spent on her skin.

"I didn't know you knew him. We're going to blow things up," she said airly. Lulu was in high spirits.

Artan chuckled and gave Lulu a friendly hug, looking over her tattoo, "Okay, whatever you did to heal that up, it worked." He kissed her on the cheek, "Congrats again, sweetcheeks. Yeah, funny thing about that, he's Petit's dad. Well, at least her sperm donor. Whatever, they share blood, he's cool in my book."

He pat Remy on the shoulder and eyed him, "No funny business with this one, player, she's good people."

Remy rolled his eyes as he took off his sunglasses, "Non, jus' friends goin' out to blow t'ings up f'a bit." He set his glasses aside and took a hold of the baton, pressing a hidden button in its handle before it extended with a Shnnnk, to a full sized staff. "You wanna come 'long and watch, s'alright."

He turned to Lulu, finally without glasses, "Dun listen to t'boy, he only knows what he heard 'bout ol' Remy."

"Oh, someone healed it up for me." She grinned when he kissed her in the cheek, then blinked when he mentioned that Remy was Petit's father. "Goodness, he's aged well."

She turned and looked at Remy, sizing up his weapon, and then looking at his odd colored eyes. It didn't phase her so much - she came from a world of yellow-eyed cat people, and the Al Bhed's pupils were swirled. "Only parts of rumors are true," she teased.

"Dun tell my age too much. In my fourties, might be older, lost count wit' all t'time floppin'." He said with an easy shrug, leading her out to the back once Artan told them to go on ahead without him. The back yard was expansive, and had a few targets already in place, with a few more set aside, and even more in the shed. Petit had done well and found some that were resistant to magic and explosives, but only moderately, and held up well.

He set his staff aside and started shuffling cards, humming to himself. "You g'on ahead, gotta get warmed up, me."

Lulu followed him obediently, chuckling to herself. "Goodness, men here seem to hold up well." She looked at the backyard, fairly pleased that there was enough room to practice any kind of spell she wished. She wondered idly for a moment what he was going to do with the cards, but didn't ask.

Figuring she'd start out small, she let her fingers flicker with fire, bringing the power up and down with her hands and her thoughts until she had a Fira spell above her head. It was middling-powered, and she directed it toward the closest target.

He watched with mild amusement as she hit the target with fire, sending his energy into one of the cards. It started to glow -- dull magenta at first, but the more power he poured into the card, the brighter it glowed, until finally it was bright with energy. And with a quick flick of his wrist, he sent it towards the target that was farthest away, hitting it dead bullseye, where the card exploded.

He pulled out three more cards, holding them between his knuckles and then filled them with the biokinetic energy more quickly, and set them loose at the same target, hitting in a diagonal pattern. He smirked and flicked an uncharged card at her shoulder, and it tapped her before falling to the ground. "What I say 'bout card trick, neh?"

He went through the entire deck of cards and plucked another out of his coat.

Lulu's eyebrows raised. She was impressed, not only with his power, but with his aim. Throwing them by themselves must've been difficult enough. "You never fail to impress, Remy."

She went through her gamut of elemental spells from least powerful to most, doing Fire then Fira then Fireaga, watching as the spells' radius grew larger and larger. Then it was Water, Watera, and Wateraga to put out the fires she'd started, the Blizzard spells, then Thunder. She smiled at Remy, moving over to see if she could tell where he'd stashed his cigarettes.

His coat seemed to contain dozens of inner pockets, as well as a great deal of outer ones. He didn't work his way through the second deck, but instead started on practicing with his staff instead. He didn't charge the staff, though he could, he just went through the fluid movements of practice, moving as one would after decades of training and actual combat. He moved easily, even though his coat must have weighed him down considerably, but then he felt Lulu watching, and he paused, looking over at her with a bemused, quirky smile. "What you need, chere?"

"Just watching you. I'm not good with weapons like that." She smiled right back, and motioned at how her pants were a bit too tight to put anything into the pockets. "And I'll admit that I was wondering if you had a cigarette. Blame Skwisgaar."

He raised a brow, "Ain't too hard t'get down once you settle in proper that you wanna learn it. Only been usin' it since I started wit' t'team." He admitted, sauntering over and offering her a cigarette from his tin. "Y'pretty good wit' de spells tho, gunna have t'admit. Never learned magic, me, jus' got t'powers I was born wit'. Not entirely sure magic ain't a t'ing you can jus' learn, anyway. Gotta have somet'in' inside you 'forehand."

He retracted the staff and tucked it back into his belt, before lighting a cigarette, himself. "Was told, once, t'at I coulda been a Omega. Means one'a t'big powers. Had 'nough power in me to shift t'world, an' couldn't control it..." He took a drag of his cigarette, melting into a seat on the patio nearby, "So I got someone t'fix t'at in me. Make t'power more manageable. Still get surges, tho', big'ns..." He let that thought drop, and he shook his head. He didn't need to tell her that sometimes he became a loose canon, where he couldn't control what he did. There were times when the faulty rewiring of his brain short circuited and he'd blinded himself, or he charged something other than inorganic material. He didn't want to do that.

"Sir Auron tried to teach me the sword, and I confess that I couldn't even lift the thing." She took a cigarette out of his tin and lit it with the tiniest fire spell she could muster. It was nice never having to lose a lighter.

She inhaled and thought to herself. "It might be. I was doing spells before I was formally trained. Skwisgaar might just be adept at it because of something else." When he spoke, she blinked and shook her head. "I have faith in you. I think you'll be all right. You're stronger than you think."

He snickered and tossed the retractable staff to her. It was lightweight but sturdy, flexible but unbreakable. It was one of his favorite things he'd ever been given, frankly. "Reckon you can lift t'is." He said.

He shook his head when she tried to console him, "Non, know how strong I am, but it ain't somet'in' you can control, chere. Petit's got t'at problem too, I'm guessin' it's got somet'in' to do wit' our ot'er blood but I ain't gun' say so 'til I get some proof." He took a drag of his cigarette and shrugged. "Could talk t'him 'bout it but ain't like he gunna say much to it. Dun like bein' in t'same room wit' him anyway."

She caught it, running her fingers over it. "It is light enough, though I'm afraid I'd probably break my own skull." She chuckled and went to hand it back to him, lest she accidentally smack him with it when she tossed it back.

"I've heard Petit mentioned, but not met her. Do her powers mirror yours? Or is it random? I admit not knowing a whole lot about people like you. In Spira, you could simply do things, and nobody cared how or why."

The grip was patterned and rough, like a metal file would be, and the rest of it was smooth. It shined and reflected very well. He took it back with a smile and set it aside, "Been known t'brain myself wit' it from time t'time, oui. Part of learnin' is to learn not to do somet'in'."

He looked up, offering a seat once the staff was back through his belt. "Non, she got ot'er powers. She can phase into a backstage sort of world beyond ours. It's how she gets from here t't'ere wit'out needin' to drive or walk too far. She also can manipulate h'own particles, becomin' more or less dense. Hard t'splain, true 'nough, but she got her mama's brains an' h'papa's eyes. Got her papa's charm too, but again t'at's prolly somet'in' to do wit' our ot'er blood."

"I suppose that's true." She smiled and leaned against a nearby tree, content to be out and about, casting larger spells. She would work up to Ultima after the cigarette, then practice her Fury spells. But right then, she was happy to practice making smokerings instead.

Once he put the staff back, she took the offered seat and listened to his explanation. The part about "other blood" interested her, but she didn't want to press. "That must come in handy, especially in a world without portkeys."

He nodded once, "Oui, helpful t'have her 'round when we need t'get somewhere. All I got is t'eyes an' t'biokinetic energy. Coulda had more, gave it up." He shrugged easily again and got a slow, easy smile. "She got lucky, all 'round, I t'ink."

He got a small smile once he saw that they weren't alone. Under one of the plant holders nearby, there was a creature, looking exacty like a horseshoe crab doesn't. It was hard to see, if Lulu was able to see it at all, as vision seemed to slip right off and away from whatever it was, and go somewhere other than it. He smiled even more placidly as he mentioned, almost too casually, "Looks like we attracted somebody's attention, chere."

"It takes a special kind of man to be know when enough power is enough. You're wiser than you let on, Remy." She smiled a little bit at him, but then notice the shift in his movement, like he was trying to appear content and lazy. She played along, not looking behind her and taking another drag of her cigarette. "Oh?" She had the reputation for being the smartest in her group (with the exception of Sir Auron, but he'd had the advantage of being around far longer than she), so she caught on quickly that something was Wrong.

Not wrong, but Off. It drew out the small thing, which scuttled across the patio and under Remy's chair. He chuckled warmly. "You see it?" He asked, before holding his gloved hand under the chair, letting the Shadow inspect it before climbing up onto his hand, holding on with all nine of its appendages. He slowly raised his hand up, amused at how perfectly weightless the creature was. "Wonder what t'ey named it." He murmured, not looking directly at the creature, sizing it up, trying to figure it out, mostly.

He chuckled, "T'is is a Shadow, uppercase S. Petit's backstage is fill wit' 'em, t'ey're helpers. Feed offa emotion, an' energy, whatever we give off, t'ey like. T'ey seem t'like me some. Bounder was mine f'a long while, prolly wonderin' where we all got to, f'sure. Miss t'little bugger. Ain't as little as t'is guy, tho', neh."

He laughed as the creature scurried up his coat arm and tucked itself closer to the collar. "Oui, jus' a babbin, t'is."

Lulu blinked. She had seen something, but it was almost like being overtired - she couldn't tell if it was a hallucination or something she'd genuinely seen. Once it was on Remy's hand, it took more shape to her, and she blinked.

It was cute. That was the first thing that made her blink. Then she smiled, moving a little closer. An outright laugh escaped her lips when it nuzzled closer to Remy. "Seem to like you some is an understatement. It seems smitten. Perhaps Artan's right - maybe it's a girl, and your charm transcends anything you even knew about."

He chuckled and shook his head, "Non, t'ey like t'energy. Absorb it. Remy can charge only non livin' t'ings, but t'ey an exception, and t'ey don't 'splode. But f'true, not gunna give it a try. Did t'at t'Bounder once, t'ing wouldn't stay still f't'rest of t'week. Might jus' give off some residuals t'at I dunno 'bout, not sure, but t'ey dun mind my company none." He pulled the Shadow away from his shoulder and offered it to her, "Dun worry none, t'ey don't bite."

The creature made the noise of leaves against wet pavement, before waving several of its claws at her. It then sneaked into Remy's jacket's cuff, and peeked out with its eyestalks.

"Should mention t'ey ain' used to bein' seen."

"I'm sure they appreciate that they don't explode," she smiled. When he pulled it away from his shoulder, she couldn't help but smile and lean forward, waving in return. If she'd been the cooing sort, she would have just then. "It's adorable."

She closed her eyes in response to it not used to people seeing it. "Does this help? I don't want to make your friend uncomfortable." She was teasing him ever so slightly, her voice playful.

He chuckled as the thing pulled its eyestalks back in. "Non, dun t'ink t'at helps. It's playin wit' you. You know, you prolly got one, y'self, you just never saw it 'fore? Everyone's got one. 'Least, far as I know. T'ey tend t'stick 'round you, keep you from gettin' too spun out wit' energy."

He watched as the Shadow jumped out of his sleeve and onto Lulu's lap. The thing weighed absolutely nothing at all, but it still could be felt, the very tips of its claws clung to the leather of her pants, and it made another sound not unlike a match being lit.

"You never saw one 'cuz you never bot'ered t'look." Remy said with a small smile, watching the Shadow arch into the touch by way of stretching its legs out. He shook his head, "An' t'chances of you never lookin' in y'life are t'ere, but dey always 'round. T'ink about when you sittin' all 'lone in t'dark of night an' you swear y'saw somet'in' scurry 'cross just outside t'line of sight. Almost always a dark t'ing, oui? Always quick as can be. She listened to Remy's words, then smiled. "Is it too bright out for you, sweetheart?" She continued stroking the tiny Shadow with one hand while casting Demi above them with the other. It was a smaller version of the spell, but it looked for all the world like she was conjuring a black hole. Wisps of shadow rimmed with purple swirled above them while she held out her arm, smiling a little as she managed to blot out the sun directly above them. "Better? Worse?"

The Shadow waved as many of its appendages as possible while still standing, making a tea-kettle noise at the spell, waggling altogether like it was conjuring something of its own before dumping itself on its rear and staring up at Lulu.

Remy chuckled warmly once more, shaking his head, amused by the Shadow, and amazed by the woman. "T'ink it t'inks you t'most interesting person it's met today." He guessed. He'd seen that look on a shadow before -- the shadow which watched the fire in the stoves and furnaces was much the same way, it had gone off to live with Bill's son, who named it Tinker. He smirked, "If you didn't have one, I t'ink you do, now."

Lulu couldn't help but laughing at how innocent the little thing seemed to look. She let the spell end in the air, not even wincing as it hissed and dissolved. She was used to it.

She leaned over the shadow and let her hair down, using it as a makeshift curtain for the little thing. "It's welcome to sit on my lap whenever it wants to, unless said lap is busy." She continued to idly stroke it, looking back up at Remy. "You said you had a pet Shadow of sorts. Is it gone?"

She smirked at the idea of it nuzzling her for attention while she was showering, or in bed with Skwisgaar. But if he said they were smart, then it likely wouldn't come up.

She continued to stroke the Shadow, testing out light scritches to see if it liked them. "Maybe it'll show up soon. If not, well, maybe it's a chance to make new friends?" She thought about it for a moment, still hunched over to create a canopy with her hair. "I wonder if they had them on Spira. If they like energy, they must have loved Sin."

"T'ey eat excess energy, keep it from messin' wit' you too much. T'ey feed off emotions an' like lots of t'ings. Music wit' a lot of bass in it, people wit' powers... Now I t'ink 'bout it, one followed t'band home when t'ey came t'our world. Somet'in' about Nat'an's voice, m'guessin'." But I know f'a fact you gunna see 'em now t'at you know t'ey're 'round." Then, with the ease of someone who was used to picking up an moving at the drop of a hat, he switched subjects, "After t'is smoke, gunna go back to practice. Lulu nodded, and looked at Remy. "Well, I'd rather you not go nuts. I think you're fine as you are." She smiled a little bit, and then couldn't help laughing when he mentioned one following Dethklok home.

"Oh, I wouldn't be surprised if those boys had any number of supernatural guests. They don't really understand that they can do things. Well. Maybe my Skwisgaar does, he's wiser than the rest. But still. I'd be interested in learning more about them." She moved a little closer to the Shadow, almost nuzzling it with her face and laughing when it nuzzled in return.

She thought about it, and nodded. "I'll practice again when you do. But for now, I should think of a name. Calling you little has to get insulting, and one day you won't be so small, hmm?" She tried to think of something suitable. "I might call you Anima, after Yuna's Aeon. Would you like that?" She smiled when it waved its appendages at her. "I'll take that as a yes."

He chuckled, "T'ey all got diff'rent names but mosta us can't pronounce 'em. Heard Bill get close, know Petit can make a few of t'eir sounds, but is like tryin' to speak dolphin or somet'in'." He took another drag of his cigarette and mused to himself. "Bill taught his how to type, know t'at much. Logan was teachin' ours Morse code." He shrugged, "But t'ey have a more effective way of speakin'. It's a language of emotion. Of mental images. Memories." He shrugged one shoulder and stretched out his legs, crossing them at the ankles.

He half wondered why people didn't speak like that, themselves. It made more sense, but then again, people liked lying, and you couldn't lie about emotions or mental images.

"I like that. It's almost like spheres." She looked up from where she'd been letting the Shadow bat at her hair. "In Spira, there were these things - made from water, but solid. We could record memories onto them, and they'd stay preserved forever. With the right viewer, you could blow them up so large that it would feel like you were inside them." She smiled a little half-smile that was warmer than most of her facial features. "I'm trying to find a few for a wedding present. Skwisgaar likes magic, you see."

She looked down at the shadow, and sighed. "But it must be nice to communicate like that. Words are so easy to hide behind. I've always tried to speak plainly, but people so seldom do." She scritched the Shadow again before motioning to her shoulder. "If you'd like to climb up, I'll cast the biggest spell I can."

Ultima was so large that she often had to be careful. She made sure she had enough room to cast it before raising her arms above her head. The last thing she wanted to do was to explode something too close to Remy. When she started to cast the spell, everything around her and Remy went pitch black. She could almost hear the spell more than anything, something that she was sure sounded mad. Her eyes were closed tightly, but as she drew her arms down, she opened them. Something sparkled in the darkness over her head, a few feet away, and the sparkles grew in size and power. She was careful with her placement so that the blast would move away from her and Remy. After a few moments, the sparkles had moved so that they were shining and large. She moved her hands to release them, and smirked when they exploded, sending trees and animals and water scattering in a radius the size of a modest home.
