"Like evolution," Emma nodded, "Exactly." The girl was bright. Before Emma said anything else, her face darkened slightly at Carrie's words. She could tell just from how Carrie behaved that the abuse had gone on for a while. It was still hard to hear.
"I'm very sorry, Carrie," Emma said. "Your mother shouldn't have treated you like that. You deserved much better." A pause. "We can arrange it so that you talk to someone about everything that happened to you. It might be good for you."
