Who: Gar Logan and Rose Frost
What: First Date Madness
Where: The Bronx Zoo, but don't tell her that, it's a surprise.
Warnings: Flirting and copious innuendo.

The problem with growing up around superheroes was that Gar had terrible taste in fashion. He was used to bright colors and tight pants and whatnot. He knew that Rose was probably used to it from him, had seen all his most offensively floral Hawaiian shirts, but he still felt the need to look pretty for her.

He'd gone shopping for clothes that he didn't know how he looked in. Wasn't it supposed to be girls who fretted about this kind of thing? He had thought to dress somewhat casually, given the July heat, but still a few steps up his usual "Look at me, look at me!" ensemble.

Of course, he was a green guy with pointed ears and an underbite, he didn't need the ensemble.

Gar stood outside The Frost House and rang the doorbell. It occurred to him just after that he could have just flown up to her window and spirited her away in winged horse guise--mythological animals gave him a headache, but it would have spared him the risk of a psychic in his mindspace or a father in his facespace. Damn.

Rose didn't get nervous about dates. She'd been doing this forever and she could string a boy along like a professional. And yet, this thing with Gar felt different. As hard as she tried to push any nervous tension aside, some still lingered quietly around her. It wasn't just that Gar was older and more experienced and quite attractive. Being with Gar meant more than it did with the typical boy she dated. She was friends with Gar. She already cared about Gar.

Rose ran her fingers through blond hair and then smoothed down her dress, which was light green in color. Before she could continue to primp, she heard the bell. The last thing she wanted was for Gar to be intimidated by her mother or threatened by her father so she practically flew down the stairs to the front door. After taking a deep breath she opened the door and took a step forward, eying him up and down. "Hello," she said, voice a soft purr.

"Hey." In typical boy fashion, he missed any hidden meaning in her tone. "You look really beau--nice." Beautiful was a second or third date word. Besides, she knew how she looked. No one was more aware of a Frost's beauty than a Frost herself.

Gar offered his hand. When she took it, he bowed down and kissed it in a gentlemanly fashion, a touch of his usual cocky humor returning. In deference to his nervousness, however, he did this with a blush.

She could smell the nervousness on him, but she couldn't see the blush. It was just as well. Just the scent in the air helped make her feel a little more comfortable. Rose was in her element around nervous boys. And it amused her quite a bit that Gar was still nervous of her. He'd seen her in all sorts of states. He should have been used to her by now. She watched him bend on his knee with amusement twinkling in her eyes.

"Thank you," she said demurely as she stepped away from her door. "So where are you taking me?"

"You'll know when we get there. Well, you'll know well in advance of us getting there, because you have that hella schnoz. It's not the most romantic place in the world, but it's one of the most fun. And I'd rather save the romance 'til I screw up next and need it." He winked, almost definitely joking. Almost definitely.

Gar stood up and walked beside her. Once back in his usual milieu the nervousness faded. Jokes and cocky confidence were his shtick, not grand romantic gestures, no matter how much he did dig her. "But I will tell you that we're going to the Bronx."

Rose liked putting distance between the two of them and her parents (to say nothing of her telepathic sisters, who could drop eaves if the whim to do so struckthem) so her steps were lively and her pace was quick at first. Once they put a little distance between themselves and her home, she felt better.

"The Bronx?" She raised a brow and couldn't help but make a little face, but it didn't last long. Rose hadn't been in the Bronx in a long time. It wasn't exactly the nicest part of New York. "What's in the Bronx?" He wasn't going to tell her, but that didn't mean she wouldn't try to get it out of him.

"Lots of things. Streets. Trees. Squirrels. Pigeons. Hamburgers. Probably a few French people. A lot of Bronxites. Or Bronxians? Bronxishmen? I don't know, but I bet they're all really fond of the definite article." Gar was amused by her desire to get privacy, but it didn't take a lot to amuse him. Even he could pull it off, and he wasn't funny.

"...Orange socks." Gar could have kept up the list forever, but that came from playing a lot of Katamari. "So, just so I know exactly how back I blew the first date, what did you have in mind, Rosie?"

She gave him a bit of a Look, which she often had to do when he went on for too long. She didn't quite smirk, but almost did because there was just something about Gar that made her smile. "I wasn't sure what to expect," she said honestly. "Most first dates I've been on often involve dinner. Maybe a movie or dancing, depending on who I'm with." She looked Gar up and down, "You strike me as more of a movie-watcher. But we wouldn't be going all the way to New York for that." He was doing something different and special. He'd get points for that.

"I am a movie watcher," Gar admitted. "I used to rent DVDs of my mom's old movies back home. She was pretty famous in her day. The Martian Manhunter had a crush on her, that's not something just anyone can say. There was something about her that attracted the color green."

He shrugged. "I thought about a play, then I figured, eh, I'm an actor, kinda cheesy. Then I thought about dancing, but that was our first date. Well. Kind of first date. In that it took place eighty years before any other dates. And the only reason I didn't take you bowling was because I didn't think you'd want to wear rented shoes, and I didn't know your shoe size to buy you some. No, I think I have the ideal." After a moment of shape-shifting confusion, he floated by her ear. "Incidentally, do you hear a humming, or is it just me?"

Rose waved her hand in front of her face, gently swatting at Gar. "You must think you're terribly funny," she said, lips curled into a tiny smile. They walked on a bit more, quickly approaching the portkey that would take them to New York. "You were right not to take me bowling." She turned up her nose at the thought of having to rent shoes that had been worn by perfect strangers.

"So what sort of movies did your mother star in?" Rose was curious about Gar's history. The bits and pieces she knew were dark. She wanted to hear about Gar and not depress him in the process. It would be nice to know more about him than the most difficult things he'd been through.

"Got you smiling. A smirk out of you is raucous laughter out of anyone else." Once he was human again, Gar stood in front of the Portkey. New York was merely a poke of an innocuous object away, so Gar decided not to answer her question until they were on the other side of the half-faded poster for La Bohème.

When they landed, Gar continued talking as if he hadn't just been flung thousands of miles into an abandoned alleyway and almost stumbled headlong into a dumpster. "So yeah. That was neat. Anyway, Mom was kind of famous for playing these really strong female roles before it was common to do that, kind of a Sigourney Weaver with more pulp crime drama and less sci-fi. That's how she ended up getting her powers: shooting a movie in Africa in the late eighties."

Rose handled the landing much more smoothly. She smoothed out her hair while Gar righted himself, trying hard not to smirk. When he began to speak, she started to walk. And then realized she didn't know where they were headed. "I think you should lead the way," she said.

Rose hm'd quietly. "Impressive." She gave him a little smile. "And what were her powers?"

"She could kind of... stretch. She was stretchy. Mostly she used it to grow and shrink, but she could just reach for things, y'know, Mr. Fantastic style. You'd think there'd be a word for it, given how many people there are that can do it. Plastic Man, Elastic Man, the chick from the Incredibles, Mr. Fantastic, Madame Rouge... Piles of stretchers."

Gar looked around, not used to navigating the Bronx from the ground. No more than a mile. With any luck she wouldn't figure it out, but that was unlikely. "This way. Kinda weird that we should end up together, huh? The Doom Patrol was all freaks trying to be normal, X-Men are all normal people treated like freaks. Makes you think. Well, it would, if I didn't have the attention span of--hey, a quarter!"

"Normal?" She ignored it when he swooped down and pretended to pick up a quarter from the street. "I don't think anyone's ever described the X-Men that way before." To Rose, they'd always been better than average. Her mother's snobbery had rubbed off on her a little.

Before she continued, Rose raised her head. There was a smell in the air. Most people would probably not notice it. She smirked. "I think I know where we're going."

"You guys are just guys. No offense. Brave guys doin' awesome stuff, but still. In a good and decent world, there'd've never really been any X-Men. It would have been, 'Oh, you're a mutant? I'm Jewish and he's black. Let's form a multi-ethnic team of do-gooders who go around the world and stop pollution!'" Maybe it was the fact that he kept being mistaken for mutant, but it had been on his mind recently. "Some are born to freakdom, some have freakdom thrust upon them."

Gar sniffed the air. He couldn't smell anything, but his nose was not up to Rose's quality. Better than regular humans, but still nowhere near Rose's level. "You probably do. I should have blindfolded your nose or something."

"In a good and decent world, no one would be a freak," Rose said sagely. If only perfect worlds could exist. There was a small smile on her face. She was pleased. "Animals. We're going to the zoo." Almost on cue, they turned a corner and Rose spotted a familiar gate. "I haven't been here in a very long time."

There was a short line at the entrance. Rose headed toward it. "I should have guessed you'd take me here."

"Wouldn't say that. Even if I were pink-skinned and bipedal twenty-four seven, I doubt I'd be the most normal of dudes." He followed Rose like a puppy now that she'd taken the lead. "And just what makes you think I was taking you here? Maybe I was going to the Bronx International House of Pancakes. They have a mean pancake there." He croaked quietly, drawing a few stares as a small frog conversed with the pretty white girl. But he'd been a green human a couple of seconds ago, so the people staring weren't really that surprised.

"Get it? I hop." He waited for the terrible pun to sink in before he stood on two feet again. "Good pancakes." Gar got to the front of the line and smiled at the ticket guy. "Hi. You don't have a discount for superheroes, do you? You'll recognize us, of course. I'm Beast Boy, the lean green love machine--" he leaned in and said, in a stage whisper to Rose, "--and I don't work for nobody but you." Then he faced the guy again. "And this is my sidekick, Kid Jailbait."

The guy stared, but Gar was used to it and loved the attention anyway. "It's fifteen bucks for the ticket and twenty-seven for the POP Pass."

"I get to meet the Prince of Persia?! Jake Gyllenhaal is dreamy."

"Pay One Price. You don't have to pay for any of the other attractions inside, except for the camel rides."

"Can I ride Jake instead?"

"That's up to him."

"Two Prince of Persia passes, then." Gar handed over the money and pulled Rose forward. "Welcome to the only date I could think of that makes me smell like spring daisies and cinnamon."

Rose rolled her eyes at Gar's show, the slightest of smiles making its way onto her face. She was tempted to apologize for Gar's behavior, but then figured that this was probably the most fun the ticket man would have all day. She threw him an apologetic look, instead, before being ushered in by Gar.

"I hope you realize how extremely out of your league I am," she said warmly. "And if you'd rather we reschedule this date until after you find Mr. Gyllenhaal and have some private time with him, I think I'd understand."

She walked down a long path, keeping her eye out for maps that would indicate where they were and what was up ahead. Rose hadn't been to the zoo in years. "I want to see the tigers," she informed him, head held high.

"Tiger Mountain is this way. They do a good show, tigers. I mean, sometimes you'll just have them lying around all day, being nocturnal and all, but about three times a day they have these special sessions where they do things you would expect tigers to do. I've been here a couple of times before." He actually paid about fifteen hundred dollars a year to that effect; the only reason he bought tickets was because he approved of what they were doing.

"I think anyone would understand pausing a date to go bang Jake Gyllenhaal. Jakey. Jacob. He's a keeper. I mean this in a completely heterosexual way, but I would like to sodomize him," Gar said, smirking wide enough that even some of the nearby exhibits got the joke.

Gar and Rose passed by a couple walking the other way and missed a very interesting hushed conversation that went something like this:

"I told you! Men just want me."

"Shush."

"Let me at least go talk to him. Just talk! And lick."

"Jake, no."

"C'mon, Reese, you're being mean."

"Quiet, you. I'm not having a repeat of the Dick Grayson incident."

"It's not my fault he was so pretty I just had to make out with him."

"We're not talking about it. Now put your hand on my ass."

"This ass isn't manly enough."

"I swear to God, Jake..."

"Only a couple of times?" Rose asked. Before Gar responded, she turned her head and watched two faces in the crowd that passed them by. She shook her head. Couldn't have been who she imagined. "A suggestion," she said, giving Gar her attention, "if you really want to impress me, you probably need to do something other than talk about all the gay sex you'd like to have with your crushes on this date."

They entered Tiger Mountain, brushing their way past the small crowd that was gathered around a small exhibit. There was a sign that pointed to the tigers and information on the walls about the natural habitat of the Siberian Tiger. Rose scanned these signs, but was more interested in seeing the animals.

"See, that's another way in which girls and guys are different. I'm all kinds of in favor of you telling me about all the women you'd like to bang like a broken screen door in a hurricane." Lesbianism was God's reward for a virtuous world, as far as Gar was concerned.

Gar, having worn a tiger's muscles, had a sharper hold on the animals than the zookeepers. "Siberian tigers are the largest of the big cats. They have a lot of stopping power, but getting away is possible; they're more sprinters than anything else, and they tend to give up on prey if they don't kill it with the first blow. Bengals are smaller, but they're more dangerous to humans, since Siberian tigers almost never turn man-eater. Okay, maybe I've been here more than a couple of times." Gar remembered the feeling of being a tiger and tried to think of what he would do in that situation. "There's one," he said, only barely after opening his eyes to confirm his guess. "That one's named Tony. Zookeepers aren't very creative."

Rose rolled her eyes. "When I find a woman I'm sexually interested in, I'll be sure to let you know." Even at sixteen, she was very much aware of how much boys liked lesbians. She had more than a few school friends who paraded around pretending to be bisexual just for the attention. Rose was proud of the fact that she didn't need a pathetic display to make boys notice her.

Rose walked up to the glass and listened as Gar spoke. She hid a smile from him. There was something endearing about how dorky he was, but he didn't need to know she felt that way. Rose pressed a hand against the glass and watched the animal. "Considering the fact that you can be Tony if you really wanted, why do you come here so often?" She turned to look at him.

"When I was younger, I started coming here to get more things to turn into. Nowadays, with the internet and Animal Planet, not so much. Although the internet doesn't help much because of all the boobies. God, it's easy to get distracted." Gar made a show of staring at Rose's chest before "snapping out of it." He grinned and continued. "By now? I come to the zoo for the same reason everyone else does: because animals are cool. My parents--my biological parents, I should say--were researchers. We went to Africa to study all these animals and I thought, 'Wow, this is so neat.' I can't remember much of my parents, but I remember everything about the jungle."

Gar watched as Tony jumped into the water. He knew exactly how the cat felt. "And I guess there's another reason. Back home, when something happens to turn people like me into... you know, freaks, everyone thinks that you should want to go back to normal. But I can barely remember being 'normal.' And I don't want to be. Sometimes it's nice to come here and remind myself why I love being who I am. And besides, I--kitty!" Gar nearly pasted himself to the glass and pointed a little ways away. "There's a female--I think it's Shere Connie--with her cubs. The boy one is Roo and the girl one is Kanga. There was a third named Tigger, hence the names, but it didn't make it."

It always felt a little strange to be reminded that Gar hadn't been born a mutant. "That's... nice." She said. She meant it. Rose watched the animals for a moment before turning her attention to Gar. She watched him out of the corner of her eye for fear of him noticing that she found him more interesting in the animals behind the glass. Not that the cubs weren't cute enough to put a smile on her face.

"Are you going to be doing this all day?" She asked playfully. "Pressing your face up to the glass?" The tigers were pacing. Probably waiting for food.

"Only around the baby animals. They're the only things around that are cuter than I am, so someone should notice." Gar peeled himself off the window and buffed away the marks left by his cheek. "Well, giant pandas are cute no matter what size they are, and frankly I'm all about how awesome those big tigers look, but there are no giant pandas here."

"So what do you want to see next? I have this place memorized." Gar heard someone giving a tour approach behind them, repeating the information he had just given to Rose. "Anywhere in the zoo, I'm your man." He took her hand and laced their fingers together.

"Hm. Arrogant." Rose teased, "I don't think you're as cute as you think you are." She would have gone on but she could hear voices in the distance. Having been born in New York, Rose had a natural distaste for tourists and anything tourist related. Even if this weren't the case, she was far too cool for tour groups, so she turned her nose up at the approaching crowd and pulled Gar outside.

"I always liked..." Rose had to take a minute to remember correctly. "Asia. Because of the monorail. Can we go there?" Rose didn't remember where anything was anymore.

"Sure, it's over here." It was a bit hard to fight against the flow of people going to see the tigers, but they could manage it. "Scuse me, I'm shoving you, beg pardon, one side, I'm green." He continued shoving until they managed to find a clearing. "Y'know, if we were anywhere but at a zoo, we could just go Kong and Fay Wray. Not looking to get tranqed right now, though."

Gar and Rose finally ended up at the monorail. A couple of zookeepers waved as Gar passed by. "I don't know why they always recognize me out of the thousands of people that hang out here every day. Maybe it's my hair."

Rose weaved her way through the crowd, a task that wasn't exactly easy while holding onto Gar's hand. She bumped one rude woman who didn't get out of the way or even bother to glance in her direction. She was grateful when they were free of the mob.

"Of course it's the hair." Rose said. She reached out and let some fingers run through his hair. She smiled and led them onto a car. The monorails were small and green, fitting about ten people. A small family got into the car with Gar and Rose. There was a short wait and then the car started to move with a jolt. "So," Rose said, "Are you going to play tour guide again?"

"I've been most of these animals, you know. Ah, here. The Indian rhino. You can see Penny and Ella over there, they're the big ones. The other two are babies. Penny's the one on the left. Rhinos have a reputation for being mean, but they're like any herding herbivore. They're fine if you leave them alone. Males can be assholes, but that's the way with bulls, too."

Gar knew a few of the animals by face, so he went on, describing their personalities and so forth. After a couple of minutes on the ride, Gar yawned and stretched and put his arm around Rose in a terribly, terribly lame maneuver that he was nonetheless very proud of. "I hope you saw what I just did there, kid," he said to a child sitting with his mother a little ways away. "You're going to want to remember that move."

Rose turned her head. Too young to really care about girls (who were icky!), the boy had been listening in on Gar's stories about the animals. He was more interested in learned and the fact that Gar was green. "And you're going to want to never use that move," Rose advised him before turning back to catch the last of the animals before the monorail rolled back into the station. The boy and his mother left. "You are not very smooth," Rose smiled at Gar. "And you shouldn't be giving impressionable children bad advice."

She rose. "Come on. You pick the next place we go." In spite of her best efforts, Rose leaned in as they walked out of the car together and kissed Gar on the cheek. "That was not because you put your arm around me like a nervous schoolboy," she said quickly.

"That move is a classic, I'll have you know. Passed down from generation to generation in the guise of very bad movies." Besides, no matter what she said, it got him a kiss. Any moves that got Gar kissed were good moves by definition. "One day the kid will put his arm around a girl in a very post-modern way, and he'll end up with a tongue down his throat."

Gar took a quick look at a nearby map to make his choice. "I've got an idea. C'mon." He tugged her toward the Congo section of the zoo. When he heard a loud impact and a shout of surprise from the tour, he knew he was headed in the right direction. "This," he said in the same tone one would use to introduce one's best friends to his girlfriend, "is Stephanie." Stephanie was a gorilla with a wide gorilla grin. "Stephanie, this is Rose!" His voice was a bit louder to get through the plexiglass. To Rose, he added, "She likes to slap the glass to scare people. I think it's gorilla humor, which might be why you don't see much great ape standup."

Rose probably should have been a little more worried that her boyfriend was on first name terms with most of the animals in the zoo, but she just couldn't really force herself to care. Her eyes went from Gar to Stephanie. "What a bitch," Rose said. "I approve." She approached the glass and placed her hand gently against it. Stephanie didn't seem to pay her too much attention.

Suddenly, Stephanie rushed toward the glass and made to slap it. She stopped a few inches away. Rose, to Gar's complete lack of surprise, didn't move. Gar smirked. "You made a friend! Or possibly a romantic rival. I think that Steph is warm for my green form. It's not easy being attractive to every species under the sun, but somehow I live with it." Gar gave a big dramatic sigh.

Stephanie, in response, gave him a raspberry. "Don't you start," Gar said, pointing at the gorilla. "I get enough criticism from her for my wonderful, wonderful jokes without you piping in."

Before the argument between man and beast could continue, Stephanie knuckled away, laughing a gorilla laugh. Gar glowered. "I think I just lost an argument to a simian."

"Oh what a difficult life you lead." Rose rolled her eyes. "Are you absolutely sure she just doesn't find you mildly irritating? I can understand how you'd get that confused with a crush." She turned to Stephanie, "What do you think?" The gorilla continued to make the same laugh-like noise. "Yes," Rose nodded, "That's exactly what I thought."

Looking quite pleased with herself, Rose turned to Gar. "So what's next?" Stephanie slapped the glass one more time, hard, and because Rose wasn't paying attention she started slightly. "You, quiet," she said to Gar before he could even open his mouth.

"Let's get you to something that's less inclined to try to seduce me. Assuming we can find such a creature in the entire animal kingdom." Gar didn't comment on Rose's shock, but he did smirk so broadly that an old, blind, half-asleep lizard in the distant reptile house thought he seemed a bit smug.

"I think that we should walk somewhere peaceful and you can do some talking for a change. Yes," he said quickly, before she got the chance to, "I do like to hear the sound of my own voice. But I like your voice too. Maybe even a little bit better, but don't tell my ego. It couldn't handle that kind of blow."

Rose rolled her eyes at Gar and walked out of the Congo. He was much too smug for her to take his hand. Arms crossed over her chest, she said, "What would you like me to talk about?" She took a turn that led down a more secluded area. The trees grew tall here. They wouldn't be near the next exhibit for a little while.
