who. Death and [OPEN]
what. In the mood for a quick log. So. A quick log. Maybe some lunch will be had. Hanging out of some kind.
when. Today
where. NY

It was a hazy afternoon, warm enough to make a person break into a sweat after just a few minutes of strolling down the street. Death didn't have to worry about that sort of thing. The heat touched her and she could feel it, but she wasn't moral and she wasn't human. She didn't sweat. Her hair didn't frizz because of the moderate humidity. She felt things in her own Endless way. And, as she walked down the wide avenue, she relished the feel of the warm breeze.

She was humming quietly to herself, a cheerful rendition of "Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head" just loud enough that people who passed her could hear. There was a top hat on her head, an umbrella hanging from the crook of her bent arm, and a bright smile on her face.

Death winked at a stranger, an older fellow whose eye had been following her as soon as he'd spotted her. At the same time, she felt the tug of a dying soul down the street. She was at once in two places, taking the hand of a dying middle aged woman and walking down the sunny street. Death decided suddenly that life was good. Even for those who weren't technically living.

Today was a good day!

Victor Von Doom was in a good mood, having begun his machinations in the Middle East, the Far East, and within the halls of American business, all at the same time.

So far, all was running smoothly. At last, Doom would prevail!

So, he was almost whistling as he walked, peering around.

Before he saw her.

An enchanting, happy, and very familiar face.

He stopped, ah, well, not dead, and grinned. He had made his peace, at last, with death, and it would behoove him, he thought, to do so with Death as well.

So, he swept her a bow.

"Fair Day, Madame!"

Death brightened further at Doom's graceful bow. In return, she tipped her hat a bit and winked. "Well met, Sir." That was as formal as she'd be. Immediately, she relaxed her shoulders and looked Victor up and down. One hand rested on her hip. "How are you?"

He wore a business suit, cut to his body exactly, of comfortable fabric, in a rich green. He grinned and bounced, almost. Not really, but a little.

"Silly, brimming with happiness, and absolutely fine. It is a good day. And you?"

He looked her over, her stark beauty impressing him even on a moment's notice.

It was like this with almost everyone. There were people who feared Death, but more seemed to warm to her immediately. Going out and meeting people for the first time for Death was more like meeting up with old friends. "It is a nice day, isn't it?" Death stepped to the side, getting out of the way of people who were walking. "Care to take a walk with me? You can tell me about your day." There was little Death liked more than hearing about someone's day.

He nodded.

"It is. And I would be delighted. Good company on a good day."

He stepped to the side and waved a hand ahead.

"Shall we?"

He could not help being a little formal, even as he was not.

Death, pushing aside the formalities, hooked arms with Doom and began to walk. They were an odd looking couple, certainly. He, distinguished and in a suit, she looking like something out of Goth Rawker Monthly. They took a turn and ended up walking on the street just across from Central Park.

"So, what's made this such a good day for you, Victor?" She asked, extremely interested in his day.

He chuckled and walked with her, not minding at all how they looked. There was something about her, and he liked it.

"Oh, well, plans go apace, to restore my homeland, to make sure others will not violate it, and to reclaim the fortune that is rightfully mine. All without dealing with the rabble that used to oppose me."

He grinned at her.

"It is going very well, indeed."

"Sounds neat," Death said with a nod. He might not have been the best character or the nicest man, but Death wasn't one to judge. And she could respect that he wanted to look carefully after his homeland. "I'm glad things are going well." There was a pause. "Getting things done peacefully?"

He nodded.

"My thanks. I have worked carefully, slowly, here. I hope ti continues."

He cocked his head to look aside at her.

"So far. Mostly. Despite what many from my former world think, I do not act violently out of hand. There will be violence enough when my people reclaim their land in the end. There is no solution to some equations without violence."

A nation would be born in blood, most likely. So it usually went.

Death hm'd quietly, not particularly perturbed by the mention of violence. As the embodiment of Death, she saw gore and murder every moment of every day. She understood the necessity of it. She didn't judge those who partook in it. "I understand," she said with a nod. "I hope things go well for you and your people."

He nodded, curious, and charmed.

"You're welcome." She smiled. "Things are going well." She didn't have pursuits like regular mortals did. There was no real job, aside from what she always did. "My friends are well, my girlfriend is, too." Death probably owed George a day out, something fun.

He blinked but nodded. Anyone was entitled to their idiosyncrasies.

"Good. If ever I can be of assistance, I will."

Ganieda had ventured out today while Mother was at college. She was trying to get used to the vehicles on the road and the proximity of so very many people.

It was warm, so her arms were more bare than she was used to and the computer had warned her to put on some ointment called 'sun screen'. She had used the spell-disc that Merlin had given her to link up a small device that said 'iPod' on the back. Now she had a guide so she would not get lost in the city.

So now she was looking into shop windows, and the jewelery shop had caught her eye. She'd never seen so many sparkling gems in her life.

She heard the whistling, and though she did not recognize the tune, she smiled pleasantly at the person whistling. It was nice to see someone on these streets in a good mood.

It was a bit after her walk and talk with Doom that Death spotted the girl by the jewelry shop. There was something in the air around the girl, a certain sort of magic and antiquity that Death could almost smell. This girl wasn't from the city. She might not even have been from this century. There were plenty of old souls that haunted the streets and Death had gotten very good at spotting them.

Death smiled at the girl and slowed her walk to a stop. She admired the jewelry alongside Ganieda. "Pretty, aren't they? Probably expensive, too."

"Aye, they must be. But one can look for no cost at all."

She smiles at the other woman, who seems so very friendly, at odds with all the people who just walk around and never seem to see anything they pass.

"Window shopping is a good way to spend the afternoon." Death turned her attention from a bracelet with large blue stones to the girl's face. "Are you new to the city?" She asked this curiously and cheerfully. "You can call me Didi."

"It seems so."

She had not met anyone yet besides Merlin, and for a moment she wasn't sure which name to use. "In a way, yes." She smiled again. "I'm Genevieve."

At least it's close enough to her own name so it wasn't very hard to answer to.

"Thank you," she said softly. "You might say that. Mother has gone off to school and I was just walking."

She looked a bit confused, really, but she still knew so little about life here. Only that one should not stand in front of moving wheeled vehicles and that she should be wary of crossing the street.

She hasn't crossed one yet. It may be bad luck.

"Would you maybe like some company on your walk?" Death didn't want to push herself onto this girl, but she looked like she could use the guide. And maybe a friend. Death was quite good at being a friend. "I know the city pretty well." An understatement, if ever there was one.

"I would not mind at all," she said. "It would be nice with company."

She was trying not to depend too much on her brother. After all, until she became the...intern? was the word, it might be looked upon as strange.

And she must navigate this world. Here, she would have no choice.

Death looked pleased. She took a step closer to Genevieve and made a sweeping after-you gesture. She let the girl take the lead. "So your mother is a teacher? Or is she taking classes somewhere?"

"Oh. She is taking classes." She bit her lip. "For nursing."

It had taken her a moment to remember why. Things must be so much more complicated here to be a nurse than in her day.

"That's nice," Death said with an easy smile on her face. "She'll be helping people. That's kind of her." They walked a little slowly down the street, Death weaving in and out of the crowd with ease.
