A meeting of not!siblings
Who: Merlin and Ganieda
Where: A Coffee shop near her new house
When: Right after her post
What: Meeting, talking, pondering...
Warnings: PG-13
Complete

Merlin was curious. He had never had a sibling before, not truly. Being the son of a Duke of Hell and a mortal woman tended to make that not likely. But here he was, going to meet with a young woman, one who claimed, convincingly, to be his sister.

She had replaced a spitfire of a young girl, and he has used the few minutes he had to search for every ounce of information on her, and had downloaded it all to hardcopy, with pictures and files, so she could know more of her new life... if she chose to live that one.

He strode into the coffee shop and took up a table, watching for her. He was glad most people had no idea who he was, and enhanced that with a spell that would keep anyone not his friend, or not looking specifically for him, from finding him. Magic was useful, especially here and now. He ordered a real menu from the waiter, which brought some blinking, and settled back to wait.

Ganieda had needed to convince herself to get dressed to go out, and she'd torn through Genevieve's closet, looking for something appropriate to wear.

Finally, near tears, she'd chosen a long, brightly colored cotton skirt and some sort of shirt that covered her arms. The strange garments that were worn under the clothes she'd left on. They were not very comfortable.

The computer had instructed her in the use of running water and she scrubbed her face of the paint and tried to brush her hair, but it contained some strange substance that was difficult to draw a brush through. She'd ended up pulling it back and tying it in a knot.

Finally, she took up a small bag with the identification she'd found and headed out the door. She remembered instructions, counting off the intersecting streets and finding the location of the 'coffee shop' easily.

Whatever 'coffee' was.

She entered the shop warily, looking around for her...well, for Merlin.

Merlin saw her enter and rose, a smile on his lips as he surveyed her, easily seeing her discontent. He called out gently.

"Ganieda, here, milady."

He smiled to her and swept her a bow, eyes on her, wondering at the not quite sister, a could be sister, this stranger, yet.

"Please, sit."

His voice was warm and his smile was gentle as he gestured to a chair which scooted itself out a little for her.

She looked over at hearing her name, and went over to the table. A smile ghosted across her face as the chair moved out for her. He may not be her brother, but he was Merlin.

"Thank you, my lord," she said in a soft voice. Her hair was slightly messy, but dark as a rook's wing, and her face was sweet and still had the rounded softness of a young girl.

She sat down, spreading her skirts to fall over her ankles.

"Please, just call me Merlin. In this time and place, there are no lords, or not many anyway."

He nodded and showed her the menu, carefully trying to explain each drink, mostly resorting to how they tasted.

"You can have anything you like. How are you feeling? Did you get out of the house, okay?"

Ganieda nodded, biting her lip. She looked at the menu that he'd given her and listened to his explanations, the ones that made sense anyway.

"I am...a little shaken but better. It was good to see there are others who have been taken this way. The woman was at the Library, wherever that is. So I simply left."

She may have forgotten a key. But that does not matter.

"Tea, I think, sounds good." At least it sounds familiar.

He nodded, listening.

"Very well."

He rose.

"Wait here but a moment."

He strode to the counter and placed their orders. Hers for a tea, his for a coffee flavored shake. On second thought, he ordered her a small bowl of chocolate ice cream as well, then returned to the table to wait.

"Now, Ganieda, you can ask me anything, tell me anything at all, and I will do my best to help you. This time can be a lonely one, without friends, as can any, and I would not see you lost, or alone, or hurt without aid."

She smiles at him again, slightly, and peers at the ice cream. She hasn't a clue as to what it is.

"When are you from? Did you know our...I mean, your mother?"

Their mother died in childbirth, but it was told to her that Ganieda was the very image of her mother as a young girl. It had made her curious and she often wished that she'd met her.

She took her little sister's hands and spoke softly in that ancient language, and the world faded away, and then snapped back, and they stood in a large bookstore, filled with stacks of ancient tomes, dusty books, and even scrolls.

"Welcome to Blaise's Place, my sister. This is a special bookstore, accessible only by magic."

Ganieda's mouth fell open and she turned about her. "Oh..."

So many books! More than she had ever seen in one place before!

"I think I could live here," she said, and laughed.

"I have a time or two, for a short period."

She winked at Ganieda.

"Feel free to select any books or scrolls you see, that you would like to read. To all outside this place, they will seem as simple children's books with a repetitive plot. A safeguard."

Ganieda laughed.

"Truly?" Her eyes widened. She did not know where to start.

"What is your favorite section?" She still looked rather dazed.

Merlin led her over to one section, where there were beginning books on creature of all realms, both normal and fairie.

"Here. This is the beginning. A place for starter books, about almost anything."

Ganieda nodded. "A good place to start, beginnings."

She reached up and selected a book. She wanted to learn as much as she could, and she would start with the natural, and then progress to magical...

By the end of her selection process, she had five books, which was more than she'd had at one time in her life.

"We'll come back another day."

A couple of young men eyed them and wolf whistled and Merlin gave them an exagerrated wink that made them blush and laugh as she led Ganieda on. This was fun!

"Here we are!"

They arrived at the restaurant, and Merlin gently led Ganieda inside, pausing to let her eyes adjust to the much dimmer lighting. A host quickly led them to a small booth, and handed off menus and glasses of water before bowing and leaving.

"You may have anything on the menu, and ask any questions you have."

She smiled as she settled back, resting.

Ganieda looks at the men curiously, really not having a clue.

"Why were they doing that?"

The light was so much nicer, more like home here.

The variety of items on the menu overwhelmed her, and she did not recognize many of them--but she did like sea food. "Is there an ocean around here? They have a lot of fish and things on the menu."

"It is a modern way for young men and sometimes older men to show appreciation for the female form. Some guys actually mean it as flattery, and some are just being crass. Sadly, it is hard to tell between the two from just a whistle."

She smiled wryly.

"Having been on both sides of the line, I can safely say that neither sex really understands the other."

She nodded.

"New York is a great city, sitting on the coast of this nation, and there is a great bay, from which large fishing companies go. A company is a group of people who band together to make money."

It's a delayed reaction blush. "Oh. Rather like home then, as far as the understanding goes."

She had a twin brother and still did not understand him. And she felt his confusion sometimes when he communicated with her.

"Oh. That does sound like a good reason to band together--if not for a quest." She grins and decides to order a plate with a variety of seafood.

She grinned.

"Exactly. Understanding others never gets easier, unless you use Magic, and even then, it only gets more strange."

She nodded.

"A lot of things are like that these days. Money is necessary to live and so people form companies, also called businesses, or work for other people's businesses."

She eyed the menu and decided on a large hamburger and fries.

Ganieda nodded. She could understand this, of course, on a very small level, but it was a beginning.

"And...what do you do, in this world? It does not seem to me that magic is...of the common here, from the little I have seen."

Once she had started eating, she found that she was absolutely famished, and there was not very much talking during dinner.

She smiled at her brother...sister...sheepishly when she was done. "I am afraid I was not very good company just then."
