Who: Reika and Morpheus
When: Tonight
What: Getting to knooooow yoooou!
Where: The Dreaming

Reika had found that the hardest part of being mortal again was trying to fall asleep. After living in dreams for so long, after being imprisoned there, accepting her fate to dream forever, it was hard to accept the fact that she would wake up every morning. This was only her third time laying down in bed to sleep since she'd come back, and it hadn't gotten any easier.

She lay on her back and stared at the ceiling for some time before she couldn't keep her eyes open any longer. As she tumbled into sleep, she found herself still resisting its pull, its thick webs tangled around her.

And just as she had feared, she was back in that place. On the ground again, her upper body bare, watching as a fuzzy blue light edged toward the center of her vision. She struggled, tried to get up, but her hands...her hands and her feet, they were still staked to the ground. She was paralyzed. She could never save him, no matter how many times she saw it.

His arms wrapped around her in a flurry of black velvet. Even as he pulled her out of the nightmare it was fading around them. The stakes evaporated into the now soft, warm air as sunlight poured into the rapidly changing corner of the dreaming. He pulled her up to stand, soft grass under her bare feet. The fabric of his cloak seemed to stretch and blend until she was wrapped in an elegant gown of her own, woven from the same loom.

The Dreamlord didn't speak, his onyx orbs surveying her closely to determine if she was well.

She caught her breath and pulled back a bit, enough so that she could look down at herself. The dress was beautiful. She blushed a little, embarrassed that she had been bare in front of him, if only in a dream.

"Thank you," she murmured, and looked up at him. She hadn't seen his eyes this closely before. They seemed bottomless, lined with endless possibility for wonder.

Morpheus gave no indication that he had seen her nakedness. He dropped his arms to his sides as she stood on her own. The dreamscape around them was now a spring meadow.

Forgive me. That should not have been allowed to happen.

"No need to concern yourself over it," she said, smiling very faintly. "I am used to such scenes. But this...this is much better." She looked around at the meadow. "I've never seen anything like it. Not in dreams or waking."

All that happens in my realm concerns me.

It was why he'd freed Reika in the first place. He had a responsibility to his realm and the dreamers within it. He took a few steps toward the trees at the edge of the meadow clearing. It was good.. giving her a glimpse of all that the Dreaming had to offer. It should make her sleep easier.

There is much to be seen.

She followed after him, staying beside him. She couldn't help worrying that if she strayed too far, she'd lose him somehow and be lost.

"I am honored to see even some of it," she said, even as she studied the trees around the meadow. Everything seemed calming and quiet. She'd never had a dream like this.

It was a valid enough concern. If one wandered alone in the Dreaming, one might never find their way out. Morpheus was quite cautious to keep an eye on her, however, and would not lose her by any circumstance. They walked through sunlit woods, the season seeming to shift between spring and fall as they walked.

I hope you will see more of it.

She watched the colors and basked in the calm of the forest, allowing herself a small smile. "As do I," she replied, looking up at him again. He was so tall, so pale even in comparison to her. A thousand different ways that she could thank him for what he'd done ran through her mind, but none of them ever made it past her lips. They all seemed silly and contrite. "Did you make this?" she asked instead, gesturing to the trees around them.

He gave a nod, his eyes on the path ahead, his mind somewhere else. He really was a terrible host. He had invited the lady here, and she deserved more than a nod. He would make conversation. He turned to look at her, his tone polite and formal.

Yes. I made nearly all that you will see here. Is there any place you would like to go?

When he was quiet at first she felt that she'd been talking too much, asking too many questions, and decided to remain quiet. But when he spoke, she cheered a little. "I wouldn't know where to go," she admitted. "...Where do you live?"

Ah, the heart of the Dreaming? We can go there.

The path ahead seemed to lengthen and reform, shifting into a quaint, country road. The air was cool and crisp. Ahead there was a hill, and the building atop that was obscured by clouds, though the rest of the sky was clear. Apparently Morpheus wanted to keep a sense of surprise.

Never stray from the path.

As if to emphasize his warning, a nearby tree withered and something growled from within. Before Reika had time to look, though, Morpheus had restored the tree with a glance.

((Sorry this took so long! BTW, I just bought Endless Nights before I left town, and the whole Killala thing totally made me think of this.))

It seemed that Morpheus had a mansion of his own. The landscape looked like the Ukiyo-e prints her mother had treasured, full of mist and wonderful colors and shapes that could never exist in the mundane world.

She jumped, instinctively moving a little closer to him. "Is it very dangerous?" she asked softly.

His hand brushed lightly over her back as she moved closer to him. He was not sure it had been an intentional touch or not. The uncertainty was strange in itself. Perhaps--No. It would hardly be appropriate.

Not when I am with you, no.

They approached the castle, the building becoming more clear as they strode up the winding path.

She felt his touch, and shivered a little, reflexively. It had been a very long time since anyone had touched her, accidentally or no.

"That is comforting," she said, her eyes locked on the castle up ahead. It was unlike anything she'd ever seen.
