Who: Bree, James and Lily
What: Testing boundaries
Warnings: Nope

Aubrey had been a little quiet for the past few days. Since she had moved in with James and Lily, she'd spent much of her time in her room, reading. It was a past time she regularly enjoyed, but she seemed a little sulkier about it. On occasion, she would even close her door. She didn't lock it, but the message of needing some time alone was clear.

She didn't completely avoid James and Lily. She sometimes read in the living room, or sat quietly. Sometimes she would lean against one of them while they watched a movie. Now she was sitting at the kitchen table with them for dinner. She bit down on a piece of chicken.

It was a little tense in the flat. James noticed Bree being off. She'd always been a quiet, well behaved kid. But ever since they'd taken her in, she'd been quieter. Pouty. James wasn't really sure how to deal with this.

"So how was school, love?" He glanced over at Lily, silently asking her to help somehow. It was something he did regularly now, to try and get Bree out of her shell.

Lily had sensed it too, and in true usual woman fashion, she thought it might have something to do with her. But she wasn't going to say anything unless Bree brought it up. She looked back over at James and tried to convey 'i have no idea' without shrugging her shoulders.

"Do anything fun?" she asked instead.

Bree shrugged a little. "It was fine," she said, poking at her food. She wasn't precisely mad at either of them. It was just becoming more difficult for her to express what was going on in her head. So much had happened to her in a short time. Her father was replaced by a hapless drone, but with him looking exactly the same and taking over her father's life, she hadn't had time to grieve, really.

She pursed her lips together, looking down at her food.

James exhaled quietly. This... was difficult. He and Lily were almost parents suddenly. And none of them seemed to know how this whole thing was supposed to work. "That's good," James said, making a face. He glanced at Lily again, not trying to say anything, just to find some solidarity with her. He was confused by Bree's behavior.

Swallowing a bit, Lily decided to just venture and see if she could get Bree to tell them maybe what was wrong, "Is everything okay? I mean.. did we.." she gestured to James. "Do.. something wrong?" might as well ask. Communication was key, or something like that.

Bree furrowed her brow a little at the question. It was a weird question. She shrugged, not sure how to answer. They didn't really do anything wrong, exactly. But she wasn't okay. She frowned some. She didn't know what she was supposed to do. Or what they were supposed to do.

A dish on the nearby kitchen counter shattered.

James had been watching her face. Until the plate broke. Then he turned. It was a little unnerving, but then all young wizards did things like that from time to time. "It's alright," James said quietly after a minute. A plate could be fixed quickly enough with some magic.

Lily had been right to ask. They couldn't keep up with the silence. "What is it, Bree?"

Lily got up when the plate broke, "Whatever it is.. you can tell us.. if you don't know what it is.. that's okay.." she knew all too well how it felt when you just felt down but didn't really know why. She went into the kitchen to take care of the plate and put it back together. She just wanted Bree to be all right with everything.

Bree frowned. She shook her head a little at James. She didn't know how to say it, but being reassured only upset her more. She pushed her chair back away from the table, still sitting. Her food was forgotten now.

The plate broke again, even as Lily was fixing it. The other plates on the drying rack broke too, and there was a shattering sound too, from inside the cupboard. She was breaking things she couldn't see; it was calculated.

"Bree." James was frowning, his voice unsure. Lily was close to those plates. He wasn't sure if she'd get hurt. He rose from his seat and looked over at Lily, "You alright?" James didn't know how to deal with this. He'd only ever been Bree's friend. Now she was... either losing control of herself or throwing a tantrum. James wasn't sure.

The plate shattered in her hand, and whether or not she got cut she turned her head towards James and nodded her head. "Yeah yeah.. fine.." more then likely it had just scared the shit out of her. She put her hands in her pockets though, not wanting to alarm anyone if she'd cut herself. It couldn't have been too bad. She didn't know what to do either, except it felt like everything in their house was going to get broken.

Bree looked at James, and then Lily. Her eyes seemed a little darker. The glasses on the table broke, spilling liquid out onto the table and over the chairs. She pulled her knees onto her seat, curling up. She looked over at one of the windows and it broke, too.

How far was this going to have to go?

James shielded himself from broken glass. When the window shattered he tensed and looked at Lily. This was freaking him out, too. Young wizards couldn't do something like this. Not unless they meant it or were under serious stress. "Bree." James voice was strong. "Stop. Now."

Oh god, this was bad. Really really bad. She didn't know what was going on, but she wasn't going to let anyone get hurt. "Stop it," she echoed James. They had to stop her from breaking things. And then they had to punish her. She couldn't act like that whenever she was upset. Lily knew better then to think she couldn't control it. She just had to think of the right way to stop her without anything else or anyone else getting hurt. That's when she went to go get her wand without hopefully getting hurt.

Bree stopped. She took a clearing breath and looked up at them. Things seemed to return to normality.. Well, broken glass was still everywhere, but the air of the room seemed more regular, and the lights, which had been flickering a little without even Bree noticing, were shining steadily now.

She sank back into the chair a little, looking back down at her food before glancing up at each of them.

James looked at Bree blankly a moment. He was so confused by this whole thing that it took some self control to not just come out with a very loud what the fuck? He looked over in Lily's direction. He hoped she wasn't hurt. The room filled with heavy silence. "Bree, what was that?" He didn't look very happy with her.

About half way there to get her wand everything stopped and she sighed. She went and got it anyway, because who knew what was going to happen. And she needed to fix all the mess eventually. She didn't seem hurt though, just annoyed. "I think she just needs to go to her room without any books.. or anything until she decides to stop breaking things and actually wants to talk to us." because she wasn't quite sure that James' question wouldn't start another tantrum.

"Um. I just." Bree paused, not sure how to say it. She turned to Lily, eyes wide when she heard mention of no books. "What?! No!" Nothing broke or shook, but Bree looked torn apart. "Please," she whined. She knew she was going to get in trouble, and part of her wanted that. She needed to know they were going to be parents and not just friends she lived with. But not her books!

James was a little surprised by what Lily said. For a half second he looked up at her with an are you sure about this? sort of look in his eyes. But then he hardened. He was a bit of a git sometimes, but he was smart enough to show a united front before Bree. He'd feel awful later, of course. "I think Lily's right," James said with a little nod. "You can't just go breaking things when you're upset like that." He felt like a traitor and an awful human being for being an authority figure.

She felt bad too, but really, "Sitting in your room and reading books isn't a punishment Bree. It's just, hanging out in your room. We need you to talk to us if you're upset. You can't just do whatever you want. Actions come with consequences, and that's one of them.. when you feel like talking to us and telling us what's wrong, then we'll give them back.." she looked over at James and then back at Bree. "Someone could have gotten really hurt. How would you feel then?"

"You wouldn't have gotten hurt," she protested, almost crying. "I wouldn't let you get hurt." The only time she'd had her books taken away was years ago when she lived with her mom, and Bree had run away when that happened. Her dad never took away her books--of course, she was never this bad for her dad. Tears rolled down her cheeks. "Can I talk now?"

It was quite apparent that Lily was smashing at this parenting thing. Which boded well for them in the future, James supposed. Right now, of course, he figured it was probably better that she be in control. "It could have happened. Magic isn't perfect. You can't always control it." He supposed her powers worked like that. "What if something had happened? An accident, eh?" He looked at Lily, figuring she would be a better judge of whether Bree should get some punishment first or no.

"James is right.. accidents happen.. and magic.. isn't a plaything.. it can really hurt people.." they probably knew that better then anyone. She let out a breath and put her hands on her hips, "If you talk now and tell us what's going on, then you can keep the books. But.. you're .. grounded. For a week. No going over to hang out with Ed, or Brenna or anything. The choice is yours, which you'd rather do.." she couldn't let her get off that easy after all.

"It wouldn't," she insisted. Even when her powers first came about and she'd done something similar by accident, her dad had been completely unharmed. She didn't know exactly how, but there was something organic to it. Something a little different than regular wizard magic. She looked down at the table.

"I miss my dad," she said. She knew that didn't explain everything. She wasn't sure how to put words on it. "I just. I want parents. I want to be normal. I don't want somebody that goes out and then doesn't even care when he comes back and everything's a mess. I want someone to care." She knew James and Lily cared, but.. She didn't quite know what she meant.

James' face softened some. He was a great big wimpy thing when it came to discipline. And what Bree said, he could almost understand her being upset enough to throw a tantrum. "We care about you, love," James said gently. "It's hard to lose parents." He understood that feeling, at least. "And it's hard being here with everything that happens. But you can't go get so upset that you're breaking things like that. You have to talk. Or..." he sighed. "If you want to go out and shout or cry, you can. You can talk to us. Or just do things with us, if you can't or don't want to talk." He looked over to Lily to see if she had anything else to add.

"You might be right, you might be able to make sure that no one gets hurt, but we're responsible for you.. and each other. And that means not taking any unnecessary risks. You can push the limits some other way without someone getting hurt you know," apparently she was going to be stuck in the harsh parent mode for a while. "Besides.. we're not exactly made of money.. some of this stuff we're not going to be able to fix.." she sighed and stuck her hands back in her pockets again. "We know you miss him.. and if he ever shows up again.. then of course you'll want to go with him. But we do care.. we care enough to want to put your life before ours and protect you from bad things. But we can't do that if you don't let us.."

"Okay," she said weakly, looking around the room. She thought she could fix most of it. Later, though. Right now, she was tired and wanted to go to bed. She couldn't just walk out while Lily was still talking, though. She sunk down, leaning against the table, her chin against the cool wood.

James thought back to his younger days. He tried to think of things his dad would tell him when he was in trouble. "Oi," he said, his voice not exactly strict but not too gentle, either, "You have to sit up when Lily's talking to you like this." James felt so weird and uncomfortable really disciplining a child. He was just trying to follow his girl's lead. "Think it's time for Bree to go to her room, Lily?"

Lily was done for the most part, so she just nodded her head. "Yeah. I think so. Unless you want to talk to us about something.." she didn't know if the girl had anything else left to say, but she wanted Bree to feel like she could talk to them when she wanted.

Bree sat up obediently, shifting in her seat. She rubbed at her reddened eyes. She didn't really know what else to say. Except maybe, "I'm sorry." It was genuine--not something she felt prompted to say.

"It's o-" James cut himself short. It wasn't exactly okay and he didn't want Bree to think that. "Just make sure this doesn't happen again, love," he said instead. "Then we'll all be alright."

Lily nodded her head, "We know.. if you want, James or I could tuck you in.." she figured that'd be okay with James. She didn't want Bree to go to bed thinking that Lily didn't like her or something.

Bree nodded, fighting back a yawn. "You probably shouldn't open that cabinet," she said, pointing at the closed cupboard that they'd heard glass breaking inside earlier. "I'll fix it tomorrow." And they wouldn't be able to open it without an Alohomora now.

She rubbed at her eyes again. "Will you tuck me in?" she asked, looking to both of them. "Can I read in bed?" she asked, but it was obvious that she was practically asleep already. She wouldn't have been able to keep her eyes open long enough to find her bookmark, let alone read a chapter.

He glanced over in the direction of the cabinet. James figured he could check it out later. He wasn't completely useless with a wand. "Alright," James motioned for Lily to come follow and then he got next to Bree. The use of power had knocked her out. Not sure if she would even make it to bed without some support, James leaned down and, with a quick warning, picked Bree up. "Come on, then," he said quietly, leading them to Bree's room.

Cleaning up could definitely wait until later, she was in no hurry to clean it all up anyway. "Sure," she smiled a bit and followed James and Bree up to her room. "Which book do you want?" though she wasn't sure she'd know where it was, there were a lot of books.

She curled up into James' arms, her head resting against his chest as she got comfortable. Her eyes started closing even in the hallway, the gentle movement of his steps soothing her. "Ache to Shiver," she mumbled against James' shoulder, but it wasn't a book they'd find on her shelves. It wasn't a book in this universe, even. By the time she was put down on her mattress, her eyes were closed and her breathing was slow and even.
