What: Dealing with the baby!

Where: The Winchester ~~Compound~~ Mansion

Dean had fit Sam into the black Snugli that his assistant had delivered the day prior. He'd found out very quickly that Sam didn't like being put down, and he winced every time he heard the little guy squalling. He was trying to make lunch with Sam kicking and giggling when the doorbell rang. Roxy beat him to the door, as usual, but Dean shushed her and opened it up quickly afterward.

"Oh, thank God."

Bela's first vision of Dean was his lack of a shirt, which was pleasant. The second vision was of the creature currently wriggling in the ... thing attached to Dean's front.

She managed to find words between the conflicting impulses, amazingly. Fear and wariness and the tiniest bit of lust (damn you, feminine instincts! she thought) eventually coalesced into a simple "Oh, my God."

Sammy was pretty much happy to be close to Dean. If he couldn't see him or feel him close, he was afraid. He didn't like being alone, it was scary. Plus, the shiny thing was right in front of his face and if he could just reach it, he could get it in his mouth to taste it to see what it was.

The loud thing that followed him and Dean around made loud sounds again but Dean made it stop. There was a new voice to listen to, a new sound. Sammy turned his head to see what it was.

	Dean had moved one hand to wrap around Bela's shoulders, the other still rubbing Sam's tummy. "Yeah, it's... whatever. C'mon in, I need to take a shower and make myself some food. Sammy knew Dean was going to put him down, he could feel it. This was okay for a little bit as long as he could still *see* Dean. Dean held Sammy close, and it was nice but he could sense what was coming. Dean gave Sammy kisses on his head, but then? Then he did something strange.

He put Sammy into a stranger's hands. Sammy's feet dangled as he tried to make heads or tails of this new....person...but this was just...unacceptable.

Sammy whimpered a few times, and turned his head to try to see Dean. His lower lip wibbled.

	Dean winced when he heard Sam, and he waved to him from the shower, frantically turning on the taps. "Sammy! Sammy! Lookit what Dee's doin'!" He tested the water and then had a genius idea. 	Bela's face flamed red with - shame? Embarrassment? Ironic a child could make her feel humiliated when most adults couldn't. "I'm intruding," she murmured, trying to blindly fumble her way out of the too-damned-large bathroom, but when he asked her to stay, she nodded, sitting on the edge of the vanity. Dean ran half a bath full of lukewarm water and plopped down in it with Sam in his arms. He'd left his necklace on, knowing Sam liked it. "That good little guy? Yeah?"

He looked up at Bela and sighed. "It's not you, promise. I just... it was always just me and Dad that ever touched Sam. He did this with everyone, if I remember right. We raised him, and Sam's never been one for strangers." Dean didn't mention how he hadn't even talked for a long time after his mother's death.

	All the more reason Bela now felt like an interloper. She nodded, though, accepting the explanation. "Is there anything else I can do? Get you something? I can do that." 	Sammy pushed down on the thing Dean had given him. It went down then, up very fast! Whoa! It was also getting away from him. He stretched his arms out and hit the water impatiently. 	He was so good with children. He probably wanted them, and would get upset when she told him why she could never have them. Still, she grit her teeth, handing him a washcloth, watching how careful he was. She'd never had anyone who watched over her the way Dean did Sam. Dean grinned at Sam grinning at Bela. He picked up a chubby baby hand and pantomimed Sam waving at Bela. "Hi pretty lady!" Dean said it in an extra squeaky voice, pretending to be Baby Sammy.

"Yeah, it's weird, but hell. No weirder than being in the blitz." He was still glad that he'd been stuck with Bela, though he wished he'd had Sam there too. It stung that he hadn't been able to take care of Sam. In his heart, he knew it was partly his fault Sam was all messed up.

Bela had to chuckle faintly in spite of herself. It was rather sweet, if bizarre. It was all right in this respect - this wasn't a random child, after all - it was Sam. She knew how he would turn out. Not well, but it could be worse.

She unbent slightly. "Hello, Sam." Bela mustered her best smile for the child. To Dean she said, "I'm just glad we lived through the Blitz."

Dean shook his head at Bela. "Think puttin' ice on Gene at this point would be adding insult to injury, but thanks. Some stuff you just don't want cold on."

He noticed that Sam had splashed his face, even though he couldn't see the lower lip wibble. He remembered his father telling stories about how Sam hated water in his face, so he picked up the little guy and cradled him to his chest. "Think we're about clean, huh 'ammy." He looked to Bela. "Can you hand me a towel or two?"

Dean went to get Sam a onesie out of the stuff that his assistant had brought, as well as a diaper. He'd set up the playpen on his own, and once Sam was all diaper'd and clothed, he set the little guy down in the playpen along with a blanket and a stuffed animal.

He looked at Bela and nodded for her to lay down on the bed. He crawled under the covers himself, making subtle grabbyhands for her.
