who. Gar Logan and Rose Frost
what. Walking home
where. NYC
when. After his last performance as Roger Elizabeth De Bris in The Producers. Sunday.

It was during the middle of a musical number that Rose had been caught. She'd done a good job of arriving quietly, avoiding the crew and the cast members and Gar. She was the only fifteen year old in the audience and she sat in the back, all by herself. She'd gone to see Gar's show before with Sophie. She went again because she'd wanted to see him on stage while she could. Try as she might to deny it or hide it, Rose liked Gar. She liked watching him in his element. He was a good actor, funny and with enough presence to steal most of his scenes away from the leads. It figured. Gar was a ham. Acting was perfect for him.

He'd caught her eye while on stage, and Rose hadn't reacted. It'd only lasted a split second, really. And she hadn't wanted to make a big deal of the whole thing. Gar already had it in his head that she was smitten. She didn't need to hear him tease her because she'd shown again.

So once the play was over, she rose from her seat and left the building without so much as a word to Gar. She figured she'd speak to him some other night. He'd bring it up that she'd gone to his show twice, of course. But by then, she'd be able to come up with some cool weak excuse for it.

Gar had taken more curtain calls than was strictly necessary, but it was funny. Besides, he'd rocked that dress, and maybe he felt like he deserved a bit more applause for how good his ass looked in it.

After the play was over and he'd changed and washed his makeup off (he had his own makeup; NYU didn't really have a lot of the proper shade of green) he waited around for Rose to show up. She didn't. "Hmm." She definitely had had time to get back there. Clearly she chose not to. "I don't know what you think you're trying to pull here, but you're not pulling it," he said. Gar ran to the nearest exit and jumped into the air, a few feathers touching down where moments before he'd been standing.

"Prisoners of love! Blue skies above! Can't keep our hearts in jail!" Gar sang as he flew, the song still in his head.

It'd been a good attempt on her part. But it hadn't worked, of course. She crossed a street and heard his voice and smelled his scent before she saw him. Rose didn't turn her head, but her lips did twitch into a small smile.

She wanted to ignore him but knew he wouldn't have any of that. And she didn't really want to ignore him, anyway. While she waited for him to call out for her, she thought up a few convenient excuses as to why she'd run out like she had.

On the way over, he'd shapeshifted into a cheetah and run through the streets at breakneck speed, shapeshifting into a gorilla to take the corners by swinging on lamp posts. It was horrifying, or would have been if not for the fact that he was singing a medley of Broadway songs, having moved on from The Producers (or its transuniversal equivalent) and was now singing a selection from The Music Man.

"Shipoopi! Shipoopi! Shipoopi! The girl who's hard to get! Shipoopi! Shipoopi! Shipoopi! But you can win her yet! You can win her yet!" Gar turned into a bird one last time and flew over Rose's head before dropping out of the sky and landing, in human form, just in front of her. "Shipoopi! Hey, Rosie, long time no see. Must've been ten, fifteen whole minutes."

Rose stopped when she saw the blur of green. He was standing before her suddenly. She smiled a small, confident sort of smile. It was the sort of smile she put on around boys. But it was soft at the edges. Because she actually cared about Gar more than she did the boys at school.

"Hello, Gar." Her arms were crossed over her chest. "How are you?" She was playing hard to get. It was fun. And the alternative was to go into the play and why she'd shown up again. She'd rather put that off. Or not deal withit at all. Not that that was going to happen.

Gar started walking with Rose and tried to push the music out of his head. "So there I am, on stage. Standing ovation. Oh, sure, it was probably because of the wardrobe malfunction Ulla had in the last number, but I could have had a wardrobe malfunction too that I just missed. Anyway, I had fun this weekend, and I'd like to think that you had fun too, since you came back. At least once. That I know of." Gar winked. He could sense that she wanted to just power through it, but he'd been Hard To Getted at by a woman who literally had meditation techniques at her disposal to not only hide her emotions but eliminate them altogether. Rose was a tough cookie, but she could be dipped in milk.

Metaphorically speaking.

Her head was held high and there was a small smile on her face. "I," she said, brushing past people on the street, "was bored and had nothing better to do." It was a lame excuse, but it was also the sort of thing he couldn't really argue with. It was a simple, realistic reason for her to be going out into the city. It was also a lie.

"Don't you have any after parties to attend?"

"Well, that's a big honor indeed. I mean, you had to go to London, the capital of the world, in order to get to New York, the center of the universe, and through both these cosmopolitan metropolises, you bypassed Broadway and Shakespeare's Globe, you went past a dozen movie theatres and ignored Off-Broadway, you ignored a thousand chances to window shop or to actually shop, all for the sake of a little NYU playhouse that will be showing some pompous intellectual crap next week."

Gar would have been nicer if he'd just let her pretend to be a bitch who was bored enough to find her way to the show. But he wouldn't have been Gar.

"There was a cute boy in the cast," she said. For a half second her eyes met his. There was amusement there, just a light hint of playfulness. "I didn't catch his name. He played one of the leads." A pause. "Max." Rose knew Gar could see through it. That didn't mean she would actually let down her defenses. She enjoyed the game a little more than she probably should. "Do you think you could get me his number?"

"Yes I could!" Gar cycled through his phone's memory. "He invited me to a cast party. He was warm for my green form, turns out that he tried to get them to cast him as Carmen Ghia after he found out that I was playing Roger. Here it is!" He showed her the number, one That Gay Guy Who Plays Max, 917-etcetera.

Gar grinned at her, fangs glinting with an almost audible "ting!" "You should call him, he probably swings both ways. And he is adorable. Quite the tush on that one. Could hardly blame Hold-Me-Touch-Me, now could we?"

"Yes'm!" The thing that was always weirdest about England, at least for Gar, was the fact that it was so full of English people. Did they know how sexy their accents were? Maybe they all went around completely aroused all the time. That would make sense.

"But yeah, seriously, you should get involved. Pad the resume for when you're applying to colleges. And yes, I know that being the daughter of the Headmistress of the Premier Smarty Pants and Magic Emporium probably gives you all kinds of bonus points. Do they have mutant sports? Mutant tennis? Mutant golf? I've got it, fencing."

Rose was at an unfair advantage when it came to most normal sports. The kinds that catered specifically to mutants weren't the sort of things she enjoyed. "Tennis? Golf?" The look on her face spoke volumes as to how much she didn't want to take part in those. Fencing had a certain appeal, if just because it was different. But she was hesitant. "I don't know about fencing. Or any sports."

As in all things, Gar found a reason to talk about himself. "It's fun! I had to learn fencing for an episode of Space Trek 2022 when my character fought Star Buccaneers. It probably says a lot about Space Trek that they could take a concept like space pirates and fuck it up."

And back home, he was probably missing a Space Trek convention right about now. What a tragedy.

"Do fencers get cheerleaders? I'll cheerlead. Doll myself up in a skirt and a tight sweater with your school colors, wave some pom poms around... I'll distract your opponents with sheer, refined sexy, so you'll have a completely unfair advantage."

Rose brought a hand to her mouth to stop herself from laughing. The image of Gar dancing around as a cheerleader was amusing. The fact that she was almost positive he'd actually do it - and just for the attention was even funnier. "You're..." she searched for the right word and sighed. There wasn't a strong enough term for what he was.

She walked ahead, arms crossed over her chest. She shook her head. "I have no idea why I spend time with you." That was a lie, of course.

Gar grinned like the cat that ate the canary (out). "Awesome. The word is awesome. I am awesome. I also would have accepted 'radical,' 'tubular,' 'gnarly,' and my personal favorite, 'superfly.' But you're probably too young to remember the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon, so that makes no sense to you."

As they walked together, Gar looked up at the night sky, just barely visible through the haze of London's light pollution. "Y'know, Rosita, we met on a night like this. Even smells the same. In... wow, in about a month we'll have known each other for a whole year. Do you have any big plans for our anniversary? I'm leaning in the candy direction myself. I love candy."

Gar was odd. He was probably one of the crudest people she knew. At the same time, he managed to be oddly sweet. It was the fact that he could be serious and kind that made her want to continue being friends with him. Possibly more than friends with him if she could have her way. Rose glanced at him silently for a moment. "You remember that?" What she really meant was, You remember meeting me? But putting it that way made her seem a bit too vulnerable.

"Oh yeah." And he was flying beside her again before settling on her shoulder, a perch he was quite comfortable with. "In fact, I still remember the first thing you said to me. 'A parrot is hitting on me in the middle of London.' Which, you know, is a pretty common occurrence by this point, but back then it was pretty novel."

He remembered most of the time he'd spent with Rose. That August night was a special one, besides. They'd fought evil alongside each other, and fighting evil with a girl was funtimes. Most every girl he'd ever really cared about had been met while battling evil, or the relationship was solidified while battling evil, or something like that, and Rose was no different, despite the fact that the feelings he might have had for her made him feel a bit more like a pervert than usual.

She couldn't believe he remembered that. Rose smiled and felt some color rise to her cheeks. She tried to play off how pleased she was, but he'd cracked through her well fashioned armor. For a little while, at least. "I remember when being hit on by an animal felt strange." A pause. "Those were the days."

"'So, what do you have planned for this evening?'" Gar said, doing a decent British accent in a terrible female voice. "'Oh, nothing much, we're just going to fling our panties at rawk stars,'" he responded to himself in a very bad imitation of Rose's own voice. "Man, I sound nothing like you or your mom. Your mum, as they say over here."

Gar had begun grinning when she'd said that she was glad he was coming to her party, and hadn't stopped grinning even as she snapped at him for his dirty joke. "You have cool points with nerds. Me. I'm like the Wil Wheaton of the superhero set. And if you don't know what that means, that just makes you extra cool, Rosie."

"I don't... fling my panties," Rose said with a slight sneer. That sort of behavior was entirely beneath her. "And Will who?" She hadn't ever heard the name before. The pair were getting closer and closer to Rose's home. Even going at their slow pace, they were only a block or so away.

"Wheaton. On Star Trek: The Next Generation, which my show was actually shut down for plagiarizing, Wil Wheaton played Wesley Crusher the obnoxious kid sidekick on the USS Enterprise. NCC-1701-D. I'm a nerd. Anyway, I played the obnoxious kid sidekick on my show. And in the Doom Patrol. You might say it's my lot in life, or it would be if I weren't twenty-one at this point."

Gar shrugged. "Of course, Wil got death threats for ruining Star Trek. The only people trying to kill me were supervillains, and that loses its novelty after a while."

"You're an obnoxious nerd. That's not terribly surprising to me." Every once in a while, Rose realized she was interested in a green superpowered human who was extremely uncool. Times like those, she wondered what she saw in him. Until he did something sweet and redeeming.

She glanced up the street and then back at Gar. "Almost home."

Gar bowed. "I am indeed an obnoxious nerd, Rosita, but I don't think you would have me any other way. After all, imagine if you had a friend that was as cool as you are? The world would freeze over."

He looked at her house in the distance. "You're right, there you are." He chuckled softly. "Confession time. I was going to offer you a ride, something creative like a giraffe or a panda or a rhinoceros, but I decided against it, because going on foot meant that it took longer, and it's nice to hang out with you."

Oh yes. There was her reminder as to why she liked him. Right on schedule. Rose fell silent for a moment. She looked at him. "You are very strange, Gar Logan." She said this in a warm tone, with a smile on her face. Removing the hoodie he'd given her, she took a step closer to him and handed it back.

His fingers brushed over hers as he took the hoodie. "Thanks." They happened to be passing under a street light, so he could actually see her smile quite clearly. "I'm sorry, you probably smell like boy deodorant and animals now." He probably would have noticed if she did, though. His sense of smell probably wasn't as sharp as hers, but the smell of her, a mix of shampoo and perfume and Rose herself, was still in the air.

They made no attempt to rush to open the door as they arrived at her place, some sense of unspoken... something about them. Gar broke the silence. "I think I had a better time walking you home than I have all night."

He had a surprisingly soft touch. When their fingers met, Rose felt electricity pass between them. She averted her gaze to the ground and hoped that he didn't catch the soft flush of her cheeks. She liked Gar more than she cared to admit to anyone.

After he spoke, she looked back up at him. "I'm glad you walked me all the way." She was silently willing him to make a move, to lean in and kiss her and be done with it. Her well laid plans to wait for her birthday were unimportant at the moment.
