It was a silly thing to say, Theodore knew that. Well, maybe not silly, but definitely obvious. He didn't really know how to show that he sympathized, though, except by stating the obvious. At least, nothing else had occurred to him yet.
"I don't know," he said softly. "Grief does odd things to people. Sometimes it brings them closer to those they still have, other times it pushes them farther apart. It can seem easier, to protect yourself from future pain by cutting out the emotional bond from someone while they're still alive." He paused. "I'm not saying they did the right thing, at all. Just that I've seen it happen."
He rested against her, pressing a kiss to her temple. "Maybe if you understood their reasons, it would be easier to deal with. But it could also be more difficult."
