Terrence didn't often have dreams, at least not ones that he remembered. He certainly didn't have nightmares very often, and when he thought about it later, he wasn't sure why this particular night was the time for one. There wasn't anything terribly imminent or dangerous in his life at the moment, not any more than usual, anyway.
But in the middle of the night he woke up in a cold sweat, on his back, staring up at the ceiling. The details of the dream were already escaping him, except for the end. Ella had been lying on the floor, covered in blood; he'd touched her, tried to pick her up to get help, and she'd been cold as ice. He could still feel it on his fingertips, and when he tried to get his bearings, he realized that he was shaking.
Holy fuck. He confidently put himself into danger every day, and knew that Ella did the same, with the belief that they were invincible. But if that actually happened, outside of his dream...
It was the worst feeling in the entire world, a thousand times worse than the powerlessness he'd felt in his childhood, or the buried hatred and resentment that had followed, which still wasn't gone, even now that his parents were dead. It was worse than holding his drowned baby sister in his arms, knowing even then, even though he was only four, that she wasn't alive anymore.
When he could move again, he fit his body against Ella's, hand moving to her wrist to feel the pulse beating slowly and steadily under her skin. He was so relieved to feel it that his fingers tightened hard around her wrist, then he closed his eyes and rested his head against the back of her neck, letting out a deep breath of relief as her body heat warmed his skin. It had only been a dream, and Ella was alive, here beside him.
