"I know," Tonks murmured again, shifting closer for a moment, her arms slipping around to rest more on his back. "You do protect me too, you know. I don't know what I'd do without you to come to, to talk to. Go mad, probably." She grew quiet for a moment and then said tentatively, "Maybe someday things will get better, or change, and you'll be the one taking care of me, yeah?"
She would have opened her mouth to maybe disagree a bit (not in the argument sense, she fully understood why he would be stir crazy), but before she could, he clarified the statement. "It's okay. I understand if you're feeling like that a bit, Remus. And we'll find something to do about it, okay? Maybe we can go away together sometime soon. Out of the country, though, where it's safer."
Even before he'd stopped himself from finishing the sentence, she'd known he wouldn't be able to do it. She knew how he craved human contact, knew he would never be willing to sever ties with anyone. And she was okay with that, because it was him. "I'm sure. We'll be careful, you'll be careful, and I'll be there, watching." Trying to lighten the mood just a bit, she teased, "Watching you with my beady little bird eyes. Though I promise not to land on your shoulder or anything. Well... maybe not until after she's gone. I've always wanted to try that, you know, perching on someone's shoulder while they walked or something." And she wasn't just saying that to lighten the mood, she was really just... being herself.
