All the same, he was a little bit careful as he steered them out onto open water, and then let the boat drift, with a spell cast to keep it from drifting too far, out of eyesight of where they'd come from. But it was easy to see the shore from a ways out, so he wasn't terribly worried.
What it meant, really, was that he could wander over to the edge of the deck instead of standing at the helm, and he did just that. As he did, he caught Katie's look, and offered her a little smile. "I meant to ask you about that," he said. "About your parents. Didn't you say your mum left? Or got taken away?"
