"Don't apologize," Theodore said, squeezing her hand. That much he would never fault her for. Of course she was curious - he had been gone all night, at least, and he'd just walked back in to tell her that his father had been murdered. "I think - I think something must have happened to my memory. It was probably magic - I think my mind is strong enough not to lose so much time over shock alone. It's been - it was just one full night, wasn't it?"
Just one night. He said it like it was such a small thing, and the realization of that made the tiniest hint of a wry smile appear at the edges of his mouth. It felt odd even to smile that much.
