Who: Remus Lupin
Where: The rocks at the bottom of the cliff
When: Friday morning, a bit before sunrise
What: Waking up
Status: Complete
A howl hung in the air, had been echoing off the rocks for what might have been hours. As the moon disappeared beyond the horizon, the howl's pitch changed, going up an octave or two, but it never lost its animal quality.
If anything, becoming aware of his situation so abruptly lent something to his scream, a quality of sheer panic and terror. He'd woken up in pain before - most of the time - but this was different. Remus knew that instantly. He couldn't feel any part of his body, only pain. It was the only thing he was aware of. Pain, stabbing, wrenching pain.
He blacked out before he could formulate a thought.
---
It was light when Remus became aware of his surroundings once more. Pain suffused his being still, but he didn't scream. It lingered far longer than he was used to, by all appearances. It was red behind his eyelids, and though it took great effort to open his eyes, Remus eventually saw the sky.
How strange, he thought lazily, that the sky could be so visible from inside a building. How lovely. It had been ages since he'd had the priviledge of seeing the sky when he awoke.
He hurt. His head hurt, his face, his neck, his shoulder, his back... the rest of his body was nothing but a dull ache that throbbed, and tears slid free of his eyes, leaking into his ears. Sirius should be getting here any moment now. Sirius-...
His heart gave a painful twist as reality dawned on him: Sirius wasn't coming. The very idea of moving on his own had the edges of his vision darkening. Sirius wasn't coming. He was here, paralyzed with pain, and Sirius wasn't coming. Slowly, Remus managed to turn his head to the side, the slit of his eyes closing with time. Water. Water and rocks. It was another long moment, half of an age, before he realised the digging in his back was from the rocks. The ragged edges he had seen above him had been the rocks of the cliff. Panic gripped him again. He couldn't breathe! Merlin help him, he was alone. At the bottom of the cliff. Paralyzed. Broken.
And Sirius wasn't coming.
More tears followed the first, and the last breath before the world fell dark around him again sounded an awful lot like "Sirius".
