James wasn't thrilled about the level of understanding he thought he saw behind Remus's eyes. James had always been very careful to simply pretend as if Regulus Black didn't exist. It was sort of... reflexive retribution, for the way Sirius's relatives had all taken to ignoring him after he ran away. Plus, it was a convenient sort of misdirection. James's public contention with Regulus was rather exclusively relegate to the pitch, and that was just a matter of House loyalty. By all accounts, it would have seemed that James Potter had little idea who Regulus Black was-- except of course for the glaring fact that Regulus had been born to the brotherhood to which James claimed the right. So of course he knew who Regulus was.
Still, he didn't understand how Remus could just... guess. He didn't want to ask. James knew who Remus's roommates were, and it sure as hell wasn't the kid neither one of them had ever heard of before. Although he didn't rise from the bed in question, James was reining himself in, adopting a more legitimately casual tone, thanking every god he knew that Remus hadn't actually said anything about his parents. Sometimes, James felt like maybe he wanted to talk about them, but whenever he actually got around to bringing them up, it always felt like the worst possible choice.
"What's to talk about? I was right. Mostly. Sort of. You know, except for the part where he wised up, turned traitor, and sort of did himself in trying to pull one over on Voldemort." The last strung itself out in something of a nonchalant rush. And then he shrugged again. "I mean, I was still right. Just... not exactly how I'd expected, you know?" James gave something of a wince of chagrin as he added, "I do feel a bit bad, though- I might have inadvertently punched him a little." Hoping to cut Remus off at the pass, he added, "I know, I know-- it's just Sirius's-" he was about to say 'Sirius's family,' except that James counted himself in that roster, not the Blacks, "You know, the Blacks, they just sort of... bug me."
That much was certainly true. Sirius's mother and his insane cousin, two women who could use a good, solid hexing if ever there were.
